Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
The pack's annual Harvest Hunt arrived, right on schedule.

In the end, Killian never received the arrows I was supposed to have prepared for him.

To everyone's surprise, he came to my family's home unannounced.

After all, in the past, no matter how bad our fights were, I was always the first one to give in.

A deathly silence and a solemn atmosphere hung over the estate.

Killian wasn't wearing his Alpha's ceremonial attire, but was dressed casually as he navigated the familiar path to my door.

My soul watched him, and I suddenly found it amusing. Had this arrogant fool not noticed that something was terribly wrong?

Moonlight filtered through the window, casting a cold, silver light on the floor.

Through the crack in the door, he could see a figure sitting motionless by the window.

"Sloane, can I come in?"

No response.

He raised his hand and knocked gently on the door. "Sloane?"

Still, a deathly silence.

He sighed softly. His hand paused in midair, then dropped to his side.

"Valerie was reckless. I've already reprimanded her."

"Our souls were bound by the Moon Goddess. There's no need to make this so difficult over something so small."

In private, he never used his Alpha status to command me.

Still, no one answered.

He pressed his palm against the cold wood of the door.

His Alpha warmth seeped through the wood, carrying his unique scent, the one that had once so captivated me.

He hesitated, let out another sigh, and lowered his hand.

He turned, his tall frame leaning against the doorframe, his back to the room, a silent statue.

I was stunned.

Was he keeping a moonlight vigil? In our pack, a wolf sometimes stands a moonlight vigil to declare his commitment, releasing his scent to guard his chosen wolf's home on the night of a full moon.

The pack's Alpha would almost never perform such an ancient ritual.

Killian, what was he trying to do?

"Sloane."

His voice was muffled, coming through the door.

"If you truly can't accept it, then I'll listen to you."

"What I feel for her is more of an unexplainable pull, not love. Our Mate Bond is the will of the Moon Goddess."

"I just didn't expect your reaction to be so extreme."

"However, I have no choice but to claim Valerie to save her life."

"The last thing I want is for this to cause a permanent rift between us."

"I will claim her first, just to get her through this crisis. Your Luna ceremony will only be postponed."

"Once everything has settled down, I will issue an Alpha decree naming you the pack's one and only Luna."

"Once everything has settled down, we will hold your official Luna ceremony, alright?"

He paused for a moment, then spoke again. "If you don't say anything, I'll take that as a yes."

For a long time, the room remained silent.

A faint smile touched Killian's lips.

Because that's how I always was. When I was sulking, I would fight him with silence.

He would use his Alpha patience, proposing various solutions to coax me.

When he proposed solutions I found humiliating but was too hurt to reject, I would remain silent.

But there was always one that would make me lower my head and return to him.

He thought this time was the same.

But I'm sorry, Killian. This time, you couldn't be more wrong.

"Then it's settled. In three days, I'll claim Valerie first. And you will still be my Luna."

...

The very next day, Killian regretted his "compromise."

He burst into my family's home, flanked by his guards.

In his arms was a blood-soaked Valerie.

The wound on her arm was oozing black blood, tainted with Wolfsbane.

"Sloane! I gave you my word! Why would you still poison Valerie!"

Valerie trembled, lifting her uninjured hand to caress his cheek.

"Alpha... it's my fault. I failed to earn Sloane's approval. That's why she used a dagger laced with Wolfsbane on me."

"It's all my fault."

"Please, Alpha, forgive her..."

Killian held her even tighter.

His crimson eyes were fixed on my closed door.

"Sloane, come out and apologize to her."

No response.

But in the window's reflection, my silhouette was visible, sitting quietly in the white ceremonial dress.

"Sloane! Don't force me to use an Alpha command!"

I floated in the air, watching this farce as if it were a cheap play.

Killian, if I weren't in this state, I would have already beaten some sense into you, you idiot.

I've been dead for days. Can't you see through this Rogue's pathetic little trick?

Besides, I am the pack's Lead Warrior. If I have a problem with someone, I challenge them head-on.

Why would I ever stoop to such a cowardly tactic?

"Sloane!"

The Alpha's roar shook the wooden house. Killian strode forward, preparing to break down the door.

"What do you think you're doing, Killian!" my mother Cecilia's voice rang out.

Facing the Alpha's fury, she stood with her back perfectly straight.

"Even as the pack's Alpha, you have no right to force your way into this room."

Killian gritted his teeth, a low, threatening growl rumbling in his throat.

"Cecilia, tell her to come out, and we can still talk this through."

"Otherwise, the pack will no longer recognize her as Lead Warrior."

My mother replied calmly, "She can never come out again."

Killian froze. "What did you say?"

"Sloane. She's dead."

When Liam returned to the pack and laid the Alpha's decree on the stone council table, the faces of the elders turned ashen."What?!""Killian is passing the Alpha title to his younger brother?"The head elder's hand trembled as he picked up the parchment."This is impossible! His brother is so young!""And without the council's approval!"Liam was also shocked. He never expected this to be the content of the decree. The moment the decree's true meaning dawned on him, Liam wasted no time on explanations. He bolted from the room.By the time he raced back to the blood-soaked borderlands, the entire watchtower was engulfed in a sea of flames. The remnants of the Blood Fang Pack had launched one final, massive attack. This time, Killian truly led the troops himself. On the top floor of the watchtower, Killian faced dozens of enemies alone. He tore the throat from the new Blood Fang leader with his bare hands and snapped their war totem in two.But he, too, was on his last breath.Several

Through Liam's account, Killian finally learned everything that had happened after he left that day.He had left his most elite warriors. But not long after, Valerie appeared bearing his wolf fang, a token still radiating his Alpha scent, and ordered the main force to withdraw.Only my personal guard, warriors loyal to my family, refused the order.Valerie's word was the Alpha's, especially since she held his personal token. So all the warriors had to obey.Except for my family's warriors.Valerie threatened to have them executed for treason. But they would rather be executed than leave my side.Seeing that my warriors were on the verge of mutiny, Valerie knew she had no command over them and left in a fury. Before she left, she took all the silver weapons with her.She knew that by doing so, my death was all but certain."What did you say?" Killian's heart clenched painfully."Without silver weapons, how did they fight off the rogue alliance?""We formed a suicide squad," Liam explain

Killian stormed my family's home with his most loyal guards. This time, he charged straight for my room.My mother stood in his way."My daughter is dead! You took her body. Now you barge in with your guards? What more could you possibly want!""What am I trying to do? You're asking me?" Killian sneered. "Sloane's death was remarkably convenient, was it not!""Why don't you have her and her lover come out and explain what they've been plotting behind my back!""What nonsense are you spouting?!" My mother's body trembled with rage."My daughter died for the pack! You yourself completed the ritual and brought her to your home!""And now you come here to tarnish her reputation? What are you plotting!""Cecilia, I don't know if you're a part of this," Killian said, his voice laced with righteous fury. "If you have been kept in the dark, I will explain everything after my investigation is complete.""But if you're helping them hide, don't blame me for what happens next."Killian strode for

Day after day, letters from the dungeons arrived for Killian. And each time, Killian tore them to shreds."Tell her that nothing she does now will make any difference.""And," a cold light glinted in his eyes, "break her hands. I do not want her writing again."From then on, no more pleas from Valerie reached him.Half a month passed.I still lay on that soft, large bed, my body already beginning to decay. But Killian came to talk to me every day.As if I were still alive. He marked the days. Then he went to the dungeons himself. He wanted to see what had become of Valerie. And he wanted to ask her himself where she found the nerve to deceive him so brazenly. But Valerie's condition was not what he expected. He had thought she would be gaunt from lack of food and warmth, perhaps with a few bruises from clumsy jailers. But when he arrived, he found Valerie on the verge of death. She was curled in a corner, covered in blood. Her hands were twisted at unnatural angles, clearly broken and

A cold wind swept through the courtyard. It billowed the fine clothes Killian had prepared for the ceremony. He stared at my mother, his face a mask of astonishment. "Cecilia... what is this?"My mother didn't bow. She just walked numbly to my body."Alpha, my daughter is returning to the Goddess."A massive stone sarcophagus was carried into the center of the courtyard.Killian watched as my body was lifted with ease by the pack members, as if I had no weight at all. They carefully placed me inside, my hands crossed over my stomach, as if I were merely asleep.A memory surfaced. Not long ago, the motionless figure he had seen through the window...He recalled the pack legends, a tale of witchcraft and moonlight preservation, a spell that could keep the dead looking as if they were alive, even fixed in a specific posture...It was a story I had told him as a curious tale when we were young. He had never taken it seriously.Killian's heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisib

Back at the Alpha's residence, Killian slammed the door shut. His chest heaved, the rage in his veins burning hot enough to consume him.His mind was filled with the image of my still, silent figure.Sharp stabs of pain shot through the Mate Bond, no longer the familiar warmth of love.It was a cold, grating resentment coiling around his heart, a feeling he couldn't explain, leaving him breathless."Does she hate me so much that she'd rather watch her own father's dignity be trampled than see me for a single moment!"He crushed the crystal decanter in his hand. All the servants immediately fell to their knees, trembling. His fist slammed onto the oak table, his eyes blood-red."Sloane, just because I pitied a homeless she-wolf, you will not be satisfied until my heart is torn to shreds?"Killian gritted his teeth, a hint of grim resolve in his eyes."Fine. Since you're so stubborn, don't blame me for what I do next."He strode to his desk, took up a pen, and penned an Alpha decree. The
