Chapter 2

Author: Bagel
Our Mate Bond had been silent for three days.

Killian's wolf was pacing restlessly within him.

Before, whenever there was friction between Valerie and me, I would have immediately let him know my displeasure.

I've always had a fiery temperament. If I was miserable, I made sure they were too.

More importantly, the pack's annual Harvest Hunt was approaching.

Every year, I personally fletched and polished the arrows for his hunt.

But now, the ceremonial gown he had prepared for me was hanging in the closet, yet I hadn't sent a single message to ask about his bow's draw weight.

He grew more agitated.

But then he remembered he had left his elites at the border watchtower, each one capable of fighting ten men.

The Beta warrior's claim that Valerie had forged his order to withdraw the main forces was utter nonsense.

Valerie might be a little spoiled by his affection, but at her core, she was a kind-hearted wolf.

She would never gamble with the safety of the entire pack.

Sloane, on the other hand, loved to cause trouble for no reason. To frame Valerie, she would even use a pack war as a pawn in her jealous games!

He swept the ceremony plans off his desk with a crash.

"Sloane, oh, Sloane, when will you learn some damn submission!"

"You're about to come of age. Can't you act more mature?"

My soul drifted in the air.

Hearing his words, my fading wolf spirit still felt a sharp sting of pain.

It wasn't that I didn't know how to behave, much less how to be submissive.

It was just that a warrior's pride told me I could not yield to injustice, or to a malicious outsider.

I vaguely remembered when we first met.

The Moon Goddess had guided me to him, our bond feeling as if it were forged in a past life.

Back then, he had radiated an undisguised possessiveness, declaring his claim on me.

He said that as the most powerful Alpha, he would mark me, and that the title of Luna could only ever be mine.

For over a decade, we fought side by side, our souls forged together in the crucible of blood and fire.

He had once shielded me from a fatal sneak attack, and I had once ripped out an enemy's throat for him. Until, to protect him, I was pierced through the shoulder by a silver spear laced with Wolfsbane.

When I opened my eyes, I found he had rescued a pitiful Rogue from the edge of the battlefield.

She had a delicate face that begged for protection, a stark contrast to my blood-soaked, scar-covered body.

Killian said he could feel it with overwhelming certainty: he had to claim Valerie, or she would die.

That was a duty bestowed upon him by the Moon Goddess.

At first, I thought Killian was just momentarily captivated by the novelty.

But the energy in my bloodline was unique, making me extremely sensitive to black magic.

Then, one day, I caught the faint, sickly-sweet scent of black magic on Valerie.

I told Killian something was wrong with this woman, that her presence was tainting our Mate Bond and could bring disaster to the entire pack.

He, however, believed I was just making up lies out of jealousy.

"To get rid of her, you'd even stoop to using black magic as an excuse?"

He gripped my chin, the fire in his eyes nearly burning me to ashes. "Sloane, I never thought you would become like this."

From that moment on, all warmth between us vanished.

He lost all patience with me, called me stubborn, his words turning to venom, and even threatened to give the Luna title to Valerie.

"I'm not saying I don't want you."

"It's just that Valerie has been through so much. Her pack was slaughtered during their migration, leaving her all alone."

"You are the pack's Lead Warrior. Why can't you show a little more sympathy for a pitiful member of our kind!"

"Besides, you lose yourself to bloodlust on the battlefield, completely lacking the grace and gentleness a Luna should have. Are you really more suited to be the pack's Luna than Valerie is!"

Each time, I would suppress my fury and try to reason with him.

"This has nothing to do with the Luna title. I simply will not share my Mate."

After saying that, I tore his Alpha decree to shreds, the one prepared to name me Luna.

During our last argument at the border watchtower, we even came to blows over it.

When he realized what we were doing, he roughly grabbed my wrists and pinned me against the wall.

"As the Lead Warrior, you have such a narrow mind."

"Valerie doesn't understand the pack's history, which is why she misspoke about your father's defeat."

"Your claws are for our enemies, yet you turn them on a pack mate over a few careless words."

"Sloane, you truly are not worthy of standing by my side."

I was laughing then, but I couldn't stop the tears from falling.

"I'm not worthy?"

"Then is that Rogue, who publicly shamed a hero who died for this pack, worthy?"

He was silent for a moment.

Then he turned, completely shielding the trembling Valerie with his body.

"No wonder our Mate Bond feels like a cold chain. It seems your wolf is just like your father's, full of nothing but foolish stubbornness."

But he had forgotten.

My father's stubbornness was loyalty.

He had defended his Alpha's oath with his life.

That day, I refused Killian's order to bow my head and apologize to Valerie.

It was the first time I had ever told him no.

Even if he tried to crush me with his Alpha command, I would not yield.

He sneered, the mockery in his eyes like an ice pick stabbing into my heart.

"Why would the Moon Goddess curse me with a Mate so narrow-minded and lacking in compassion?"

When Liam returned to the pack and laid the Alpha's decree on the stone council table, the faces of the elders turned ashen."What?!""Killian is passing the Alpha title to his younger brother?"The head elder's hand trembled as he picked up the parchment."This is impossible! His brother is so young!""And without the council's approval!"Liam was also shocked. He never expected this to be the content of the decree. The moment the decree's true meaning dawned on him, Liam wasted no time on explanations. He bolted from the room.By the time he raced back to the blood-soaked borderlands, the entire watchtower was engulfed in a sea of flames. The remnants of the Blood Fang Pack had launched one final, massive attack. This time, Killian truly led the troops himself. On the top floor of the watchtower, Killian faced dozens of enemies alone. He tore the throat from the new Blood Fang leader with his bare hands and snapped their war totem in two.But he, too, was on his last breath.Several

Through Liam's account, Killian finally learned everything that had happened after he left that day.He had left his most elite warriors. But not long after, Valerie appeared bearing his wolf fang, a token still radiating his Alpha scent, and ordered the main force to withdraw.Only my personal guard, warriors loyal to my family, refused the order.Valerie's word was the Alpha's, especially since she held his personal token. So all the warriors had to obey.Except for my family's warriors.Valerie threatened to have them executed for treason. But they would rather be executed than leave my side.Seeing that my warriors were on the verge of mutiny, Valerie knew she had no command over them and left in a fury. Before she left, she took all the silver weapons with her.She knew that by doing so, my death was all but certain."What did you say?" Killian's heart clenched painfully."Without silver weapons, how did they fight off the rogue alliance?""We formed a suicide squad," Liam explain

Killian stormed my family's home with his most loyal guards. This time, he charged straight for my room.My mother stood in his way."My daughter is dead! You took her body. Now you barge in with your guards? What more could you possibly want!""What am I trying to do? You're asking me?" Killian sneered. "Sloane's death was remarkably convenient, was it not!""Why don't you have her and her lover come out and explain what they've been plotting behind my back!""What nonsense are you spouting?!" My mother's body trembled with rage."My daughter died for the pack! You yourself completed the ritual and brought her to your home!""And now you come here to tarnish her reputation? What are you plotting!""Cecilia, I don't know if you're a part of this," Killian said, his voice laced with righteous fury. "If you have been kept in the dark, I will explain everything after my investigation is complete.""But if you're helping them hide, don't blame me for what happens next."Killian strode for

Day after day, letters from the dungeons arrived for Killian. And each time, Killian tore them to shreds."Tell her that nothing she does now will make any difference.""And," a cold light glinted in his eyes, "break her hands. I do not want her writing again."From then on, no more pleas from Valerie reached him.Half a month passed.I still lay on that soft, large bed, my body already beginning to decay. But Killian came to talk to me every day.As if I were still alive. He marked the days. Then he went to the dungeons himself. He wanted to see what had become of Valerie. And he wanted to ask her himself where she found the nerve to deceive him so brazenly. But Valerie's condition was not what he expected. He had thought she would be gaunt from lack of food and warmth, perhaps with a few bruises from clumsy jailers. But when he arrived, he found Valerie on the verge of death. She was curled in a corner, covered in blood. Her hands were twisted at unnatural angles, clearly broken and

A cold wind swept through the courtyard. It billowed the fine clothes Killian had prepared for the ceremony. He stared at my mother, his face a mask of astonishment. "Cecilia... what is this?"My mother didn't bow. She just walked numbly to my body."Alpha, my daughter is returning to the Goddess."A massive stone sarcophagus was carried into the center of the courtyard.Killian watched as my body was lifted with ease by the pack members, as if I had no weight at all. They carefully placed me inside, my hands crossed over my stomach, as if I were merely asleep.A memory surfaced. Not long ago, the motionless figure he had seen through the window...He recalled the pack legends, a tale of witchcraft and moonlight preservation, a spell that could keep the dead looking as if they were alive, even fixed in a specific posture...It was a story I had told him as a curious tale when we were young. He had never taken it seriously.Killian's heart felt as if it were being squeezed by an invisib

Back at the Alpha's residence, Killian slammed the door shut. His chest heaved, the rage in his veins burning hot enough to consume him.His mind was filled with the image of my still, silent figure.Sharp stabs of pain shot through the Mate Bond, no longer the familiar warmth of love.It was a cold, grating resentment coiling around his heart, a feeling he couldn't explain, leaving him breathless."Does she hate me so much that she'd rather watch her own father's dignity be trampled than see me for a single moment!"He crushed the crystal decanter in his hand. All the servants immediately fell to their knees, trembling. His fist slammed onto the oak table, his eyes blood-red."Sloane, just because I pitied a homeless she-wolf, you will not be satisfied until my heart is torn to shreds?"Killian gritted his teeth, a hint of grim resolve in his eyes."Fine. Since you're so stubborn, don't blame me for what I do next."He strode to his desk, took up a pen, and penned an Alpha decree. The
