Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
Because of what happened in my last life, I stayed on edge the entire time.

Sure enough, just before we reached the next stop, something happened to Dulcie.

She collapsed onto the floor and started crying out in pain, making it sound far worse than it seemed at first.

The train attendants all rushed over, but she kept calling my name.

“Haley! Haley! Help me! My baby!”

I stayed up on my berth and raised my voice. “Dulcie, since when were you pregnant?

“How did I not know?”

The older woman who had switched berths with me let out a cold snort. “If she knew she was pregnant, why was she climbing up and down like that?

“Well, now look what happened.”

Even though Dulcie had tried to set me up, the pain she was in now was clearly real.

She cried out at the top of her lungs, “Haley, hurry up and get down here!

“It hurts! It hurts so bad!”

The moment she said that, blood started seeping through her pants.

A lot of people backed away as soon as they saw it. The train attendants looked panicked too, shouting into their radios for help.

Only when the moment felt right did I slowly climb down from my berth.

“Dulcie, how are you miscarrying?

“When did you get pregnant? How did I not know?”

By then, she was drenched in sweat from the pain and could not say a word.

This time, without my help, Dulcie passed out cold.

Five minutes later, the train pulled into the station, and nurses and a doctor came aboard and carried her off.

Before I got off the train, I stopped the older woman.

“Ma’am, I need a favor.”

She looked at me in confusion. “What kind of favor?

“Just tell me. I’ll help if I can.”

I scratched my head awkwardly. “It’s like this.

“My friend just had a miscarriage, and you saw what happened.

“I honestly had no idea she was pregnant.”

She still looked puzzled. “And?”

I rubbed my hands together. “I want to ask you to come to the hospital with me and be my witness.”

“A witness?”

“To prove her miscarriage had nothing to do with me.”

The older woman gave an awkward laugh. “Come on, that can’t be necessary. You’re her friend. You didn’t even know she was pregnant.

“They can’t pin this on you.”

I gave a bitter smile and shook my head.

“Ma’am, if you come with me, I’ll give you four hundred dollars afterward.

“Would that be okay?”

The second she heard there was money involved, her eyes lit up.

She grabbed her luggage and got ready to get off the train with me.

“It’s not about the money. I just want to help clear your name.”

I quietly let out a breath, and my whole body finally relaxed a little.

We got off the train together and followed the ambulance to the hospital.

On the way there, I notified Wallace.

By the time the procedure was over, Dulcie was already awake.

Her lips were pale, and the look in her eyes made it seem like she wanted to kill me right then and there.

“Dulcie, how are you feeling?

“Are you okay?

“When did you get pregnant? How did I not know?”

But Dulcie had no intention of responding to me. She waved her hand impatiently.

“Can you leave?”

The older woman happened to see that and spat toward the hospital room.

“Sweetheart, don’t waste your time on someone like that.

“And this is supposed to be your friend?”

I kept up my weak, pitiful act, my eyes brimming with tears.

“She just lost her baby. I understand.”

The first thing he did after getting out was come find me and drop to his knees, begging for my forgiveness.I understood exactly why.He didn’t have a job. After we got together, he had been living off me the whole time. The reason he ended up with Dulcie was because she was gentle and soft-spoken.At least gentler than me.Every month, I gave Shane money to make up for the salary he had given up after quitting his job to stay home and take care of me.I never imagined that in his mouth, it would somehow become me treating him like a beggar living off handouts.“Haley, I was wrong.”Luckily, I had already moved, so the only place he could find me was at my office.Even then, he had no sense of shame. Right there in the lobby, he wrapped his arms around my legs and cried his heart out.“Can you forgive me?”I looked helplessly at the people gathering around us. “You cheated on me. How am I supposed to forgive that?”He wiped his tears. “You can’t let this one mistake erase

“Do you think she’ll figure it out if we keep this up?”“No. She trusts us more than anyone.”“Mmm. Be gentle. I’m pregnant right now.”“You’re really going to have that scumbag’s baby?”On the screen, Dulcie went quiet for a long time. Then she let out a cold laugh.“Of course not.“Like he’s even worth it.”As she said that, she wrapped her arms tightly around Shane.“You’re the only one who is.”A moment later, the two of them were tangled up together.Heartbreak, anger, confusion, and disgust all churned inside me.I copied the video and sent it straight to Sarah. The moment she received it, she called me.“Sweetheart, what is this?”“I found it on my home security footage.”After that, we both fell silent for a long time.In the end, Sarah hung up.“That little bitch. I swear I’m going to beat her to death.”After that, I threw myself completely into work. The only difference was that I started getting a flood of texts from Dulcie.“Haley, I was wrong. You’re m

The second she walked in, she started apologizing nonstop.“Haley, I’m sorry. I really lost my mind that day.“I wasn’t thinking straight. I blamed you for something that wasn’t your fault.“I know you’re a good person. You’re not going to hold it against me, right?”She kept her head down the whole time, but I still saw the slap marks on her face and the split at the corner of her mouth.Wallace had hit her again. After she got married, I couldn’t even count how many times Dulcie had come to me complaining that Wallace hit her.I told her more than once that she should call the police. That she should get a divorce. But every single time, she brushed it off.And I knew there was only so much I could say about someone else’s marriage, so eventually, I stopped bringing it up.Later, I met Shane. After we made things official, I brought him to meet Dulcie.I never imagined I was letting a wolf into my home. After years of being abused at home, Dulcie saw Shane, gentle and dep

Dulcie looked upset, but Wallace was too overbearing for her to argue with. In the end, she apologized. At that point, the whole thing should have had nothing to do with me anymore.Sarah spoke up too. “Your wife lost the baby because of her own actions. So why are you still keeping this poor girl here at the hospital?”Then she turned to me with a warm smile. “Sweetheart, I’m sorry you had to see our family make such a scene.“It’s getting late. You should head home.”I had just nodded and was about to leave when Shane called out to stop me.“Who says this has nothing to do with her?”As he spoke, he pulled a wrinkled sheet of paper out of his pocket.“I found this a few days ago while I was cleaning your apartment.“It’s Dulcie’s prenatal exam report.“And you still want to say you had no idea she was pregnant?”The moment he said that, everyone’s eyes turned to me.Even Sarah who had been defending me frowned.I took a deep breath. “Where did you find that?”Shane answ

I stared at her in shock. “What?”At that point, it wasn’t just me who was stunned. Dulcie, lying in the hospital bed, looked just as thrown.“Aunt Sarah?”I had only asked the older woman to come with me as a witness, but now it was obvious she was going to be far more useful than I had expected. The moment Dulcie spoke, Sarah Lambert shot her an irritated look. Then she turned to Wallace. “This is the great wife you picked?”The sarcasm in her voice was impossible to miss.Wallace scratched his head awkwardly. “Yeah. I even sent you her picture back then.”To my surprise, Sarah didn’t hold back at all.“Yeah, and the girl in that picture didn’t look much like this one either.”She gave a cold snort and went on.“I heard every word she said just now. She made the whole thing up.”Then she tugged on my arm. “Come here, sweetheart. Stand over here by me.”Wallace’s eyes widened. “Aunt Sarah, what are you talking about?“She’s the one who made my wife miscarry!“Why are yo

We sat outside a little longer. When I spotted Wallace coming from a distance, I nudged the older woman beside me.“Ma’am, I’m getting a little hungry. Could you please grab me a hot dog?“Check your phone. I just sent you the money.”As I said that, I sent her twenty dollars. She grinned from ear to ear. “Sure. I’ll go get it for you. Just wait here.”The moment she turned around, Wallace arrived, with Shane right behind him.“Where’s Dulcie? How is she?”I pointed toward the hospital room, and Wallace shoved the door open without another word.A second later, Dulcie’s sobs rang out from inside.“Honey, our baby’s gone. What are we going to do?”Just as Shane was about to follow him in, I grabbed his arm.“Why are you here?”Caught off guard, he instantly looked uneasy. He swallowed hard. “I...”But before he could finish, Wallace came storming back toward me.Without saying a word, he shoved me straight into the room.“Haley Walker, you bitch!“Do you have any idea y
