Chapter 1

Auteur: Belen
Tomorrow was supposed to be the day Kane and I left New York for Europe, the day he was set to join my family and start our life together.

I thought we were each other's one true thing. I was wrong.

Three years together, and it had always been a con. He'd been playing me for my assets from day one, while his heart had never left his childhood sweetheart.

The moment I heard the truth, my chest seized.

When we first met, Kane was the illegitimate son of the Stafford Family, cast out, hunted by enemies, bleeding out in a dark alley with nowhere left to go.

I had just turned eighteen. I couldn't stand there and watch a life drain away in the gutter. So I acted.

I activated a private medical team that operated across borders. I took over an entire underground clinic. I threw everything at keeping him alive: experimental treatments, specialist surgeons, three days and nights of round-the-clock care. And it worked.

When Kane came around, he scanned the room with wary eyes.

I didn't want him to know who I really was. My real identity, as the daughter of the Don who commanded the most powerful mafia alliance in Europe, wasn't something I could just drop on a stranger. So I kept it simple. I tucked the sheets around him and lied with a soft smile: "Don't worry. I'm nobody special. My family runs some international trade, and I just happened to find you."

The moment he heard that, the suspicion left his eyes. And when he realized I had money, something close to hunger lit up in their place.

Once he'd recovered, Kane came after me like his life depended on it.

He knew I ran cold, and he found a way around every wall I put up.

For my favorite violets, he scoured half of New York's private florists. On a night I mentioned offhand that my stomach hurt, he showed up at my building in a downpour with a fever, standing in the rain for three hours just to hand me a bowl of warm soup he'd made himself. He even carved my name into his own arm with a knife, held me while he sobbed, and swore I was the only light in his ruined life.

"Francesca, before you, I was nobody, just the Stafford bastard everybody spat on, waiting to die in the street. You're the one who pulled me back from the edge."

He'd knelt in front of me, cradling my hands, his eyes steady and full of what I believed was devotion. "If I can be with you, I'll walk away from all of it. The power, the violence, all of it. I'll come to your family, live quietly, and spend my whole life loving only you."

I fell for every word.

I thought I'd saved a fallen man. I thought we were fighting for each other.

To help him leave the life for good, I picked a fight with my father over the phone and threatened to walk away from my inheritance. I was so sure it was worth it.

I even went behind Kane's back and had a lawyer draw up full transfer documents for everything I'd built in North America: trust accounts, offshore funds, every asset I owned. I was going to give it all to him at the wedding as a surprise, no strings attached.

The sweeter the memory, the louder the slap when reality hits.

I was jolted back to reality by the sound of heavy panting and the thudding of bodies colliding inside the safe house.

I stood frozen outside the door, witnessing the fiancé I had loved for three years shamelessly entangled with Alicia.

Kane knew full well how much I loathed betrayal, yet there he was—clutching the childhood friend straddling him, his movements rough and frenzied.

Alicia’s white dress was torn to shreds, and the haute couture necklace that rightfully belonged to me dangled glaringly around her neck.

As Kane claimed her with aggressive intensity, he panted into her ear in a lewd, unfamiliar tone: "Baby, just put up with that idiot for one more day. Once I trick her into signing over the Manhattan property and the offshore funds to me tomorrow, I’ll kick her to the curb immediately. That pathetic little lapdog isn't worth a single hair on your head..."

Alicia let out a wanton, coquettish laugh.

Watching their bodies writhe together in such a shameless, intimate tangle, an overwhelming sense of betrayal washed over me like a tsunami, instantly drowning me.

Three years. All that time, and what was it worth? My loyalty, my sacrifices, every tear I cried over him, and in his eyes I was just a nuisance he was tolerating until the check cleared.

The pain came like a wave, and then it was gone. What was left was silence, clean and cold.

My eyes burned, but I didn't let them fall. The pride running through my blood wouldn't allow it.

I took one last look at that closed door, turned around, and walked away.

Kane. You made your choice.

Alessandro kept his word, and from that day on, nothing dirty reached me.Time passed — enough that the whole New York chapter started feeling like something that had happened to someone else. Then one afternoon, deep in a stack of international tabloid gossip, I came across a mention of Kane. After being sent back from Europe, he'd apparently come apart at every seam. Word was he'd become a fixture on the worst streets in Manhattan — shabby coat, talking to himself, scrounging through alley trash while muttering about hundreds of billions in offshore accounts, about being the heir to the most powerful crime dynasty in Europe, about how Fran had always loved him.And then, one winter night in a dead-end alley, he'd found Alicia, also on the street, also nothing. He'd stabbed her with whatever he had on him, kept laughing while he did it, apparently. Said she'd taken his empire. Said she'd stolen the life that was supposed to be his.He died in prison not long after.I sat in the sunlit

I was back at the estate before Alessandro arrived. He came in fast, and the worry on his face was real, deeper than he was managing to hide."Fran, I'm sorry. He should never have gotten close enough to reach you. I'm pulling in every contact I have, north and south, and I'll personally make sure he can't surface again.""It's fine," I started to say. "He's nobody—"I turned to face him, and my foot caught the hem of my dress. The floor came up fast."Careful—"Alessandro moved faster than I could process. His arm was around my waist before I'd finished falling, pulling me back with enough force that I ended up pressed flat against his chest. For a moment, neither of us moved. I could feel his heartbeat. The scent of cedar and something cool wrapped around me. We were close enough that his exhale moved against my hair.Alessandro's throat moved. The restraint he'd been keeping — carefully, for months — broke loose all at once."Fran." His voice came out low and deliberate. "I've been

Coming home to the European operation was everything I'd forgotten it could be.Here, I was undisputed. The Don's daughter, the woman every family deferred to without being asked. Every morning started with a team running on my schedule; I traveled in armored cars and private helicopters; the signature rights to half a dozen cross-border operations sat at my fingertips.Three years in New York, living small to protect Kane's ego — hiding who I was, watching my budget, swallowing my identity so he wouldn't feel overshadowed. Looking back, it seemed almost impossible that I'd let it go that far.Alessandro was rarely more than a few hours away now.We tasted century-old vintages in a private vineyard outside Paris. We stood at the bow of his yacht off Monaco while the wind came in off the sea. He had memorized every preference I had, never asked me to compromise, and always had everything arranged before I thought to ask. The warmth between us moved slowly, deliberately, comfortable and

Without my family's backing running quietly behind the curtain, Kane fell apart at speed. The blocks he'd controlled — never really his to begin with — got carved up by rivals the moment my funding dried up. Everything he'd built was built on borrowed ground. He ended up worse than the night I found him bleeding in that alley. At least then, no one knew his name. After the scene at the Stafford gathering, he became the joke of the entire criminal world. Every crew in New York knew the story: the bastard son who'd tried to coast on a woman's money and got nothing. The Stafford Family cut him loose completely — no support, no acknowledgment, nothing. The streets shut their door to him too.The loan sharks he'd borrowed from to fund one night of performance came looking every day, men with ink on their knuckles and blades on their belts, hunting him through the rain. The man who had once walked into rooms like he owned them was now the rat in the wall, shaking behind a dumpster in the wet

Five days passed fast.In those five days, I went completely dark on Kane, and to his credit, he didn't push — because he was too busy destroying himself without any help from me.Without my money moving in the background, he had nothing. And rather than sit still, he borrowed against everything he had: his blocks, his territory, whatever scraps of credit his name could still pull. All of it went toward funding one evening of performance at the Stafford Family gathering. A custom suit he couldn't afford, a rented Rolls-Royce he had no business sitting in, every dollar borrowed at ugly rates and collateralized against the last things he owned. He wasn't scared. In his head, the moment the clock hit five days, my assets would fall into his lap and everything would sort itself out.The night of the gathering, Kane walked in like he'd already won — tailored jacket, chin up, smile on. Alicia was on his arm, dressed up and glowing. They worked the room with their drinks, laughing too loud, t

Morning light poured in and woke me.Without the garbage in my life, even the air tasted different.I let myself have the morning. A three-hour treatment at a private members' club in Midtown — the kind of place that doesn't advertise, where every detail was arranged before you thought to ask for it. After that, back to the suite for a private showing of the season's finest jewelry, a jeweler who brought everything to me, because that was simply how things worked at this level. This was who I was. This was what I'd been burying for three years to protect Kane's ego.I was in the middle of paging through a couture lookbook when my secondary phone — the one I kept for outside contacts — buzzed.Unknown number. It was Kane.*Fran, why did you block me? I went to the apartment and the code doesn't work. Then last night I got hurt dealing with a crew dispute, went to pay at the hospital, and the card's been cut off. Is this about Alicia? I'll bring her over to apologize if that's what you n
