Chapter 463

Author: Aurora Wells
I froze, not quite believing what I’d just heard.

I said, “Dolly, what are you even talking about?”

But she stayed serious. “Eve, I know you’re not the kind of woman who flirts around. But you’ve finally got a man who’s not only amazing but truly loves you. You need to be a little more mindful.”

I gave a half-laugh, half-sigh. “Mindful of what? Come on, Dolly, you’ve got it all wrong. Trey’s just like that—he likes giving gifts to women.

“He’s always buying paintings from Sharon and trying to impress Tina. That’s just who he is—a total playboy.”

Dolly shot me a sharp look, then pulled the brooch out and tossed it into my hands.

“Then tell me, how much is this thing worth?”

I took a closer look.

The most eye-catching part was the sapphire, glinting like a piece of blue candy.

The diamonds around it, the intricate craftsmanship—it was from a luxury brand.

And with brand markup...

I hesitated. “Maybe… two million?”

Dolly stared at me. “And you still think it’s normal for someone to c

She wrung the mop out with one hand as she spoke.Watching her, I felt a chill run down my spine.Hospital mops were filthy, and she didn’t even hesitate before squeezing it barehanded.Even the nurse couldn’t hold back. “Miss, you really shouldn’t touch the mop with your hands. What if there’s a stray needle stuck in it?”The words had barely left her mouth when Amy let out a sharp breath.I quickly motioned for the nurse to check.Sure enough, a shard of glass tangled in the mop had sliced open Amy’s palm. The nurse rushed to get hydrogen peroxide and disinfectant.I sat there in my wheelchair, watching Amy sit on the sofa with a pale face as the nurse tended to her. What was there to say?I let out a long sigh and continued watching silently.A while later, Dolly finally arrived. She stepped in, took one look at the wet floor, then at Amy’s hand wrapped in bandages and her temper exploded.“Miss Lane, what are you doing?” she snapped, her voice rapid-fire. “There are janitors here

Julian’s expression twisted with sarcasm. “You’re afraid Miles will find out?”I stayed silent.Silence meant yes, and Julian’s face turned cold.He tossed the bouquet onto the grass. “Forget it. I just came to see how you were. Since you’re fine, I’ll go.”I still said nothing. He took a few steps, then suddenly turned back.I sat in the wheelchair, watching the complicated look on his face.In the end, I softened. I sighed. “Julian, we’re divorced. You should go back.”He hesitated, standing right in front of me. “Eve, I saw the news these days. You seem… happy.”I didn’t confirm nor deny. After all, if I told him I was happy and doing well, wouldn’t that only make him angry? Then I found myself laughing inside. Was I really still worried about how Julian felt about me?I spoke slowly. “Julian, you should go back to the company. They need you.”His eyes flickered, but then he said flatly, “Whether I’m there or not doesn’t matter anymore. The board doesn’t care about me.”I frowned

Amy looked at me seriously. “Of course. Miss White, you’re injured and in the hospital. I can take care of you. Mr. Wynn isn’t exactly the type to handle caregiving.”I was speechless. “I really don’t need anyone looking after me. Besides, Dolly drops by all the time. It’s alright, Miss Lane, I appreciate the thought.”Before I could even finish, Amy had already stepped inside and pulled a plastic bag from her hand—full of cleaning supplies. Both the bodyguard and I stared in disbelief.Amy slipped on a pair of plastic gloves, then went straight into the bathroom, filled a bucket, and started mopping the floor.Watching her act like she belonged here gave me a headache.Something was definitely off with this womanIt’s rare these days to see someone so eager to throw themselves into chores they weren’t even asked to do.I told her several times to stop, but she wouldn’t listen. In the end, I had no choice but to call a nurse and ask to be wheeled out to the garden. Out of sight, out o

The screen dimmed.Miles tapped it again, deep in thought, and started reviewing the footage once more.It was a dull, repetitive process, but he watched it carefully. The video ended with the truck disappearing down the road. That was it. And the footage itself had only been captured thanks to a forest patrol camera, installed by a ranger as a precaution against wildfires.Ordinarily, that stretch of road only had surveillance at the entry point and another camera five hundred meters farther down.Which meant the driver had chosen both the time and location deliberately. This wasn’t an accident. It was a premeditated attack. And what made it all the heavier was the conclusion drawn after careful analysis that this wasn’t aimed at Evelyn. It was meant for him.No one had known he’d switched shifts with Evelyn that day, agreeing to send Marsha back to the family estate in her place. So, that was why he’d looked at Evelyn earlier, hesitating to say anything. He was the one who brought da

I shook my head, letting him know I didn’t have a clue.Miles studied the flowers for a moment. It was obvious he wanted to throw them out.I quickly explained, “Maybe Sharon sent them. She gave me a huge bouquet of lavender the other day. She’s the type who likes bright, colorful flowers.”Miles adjusted his glasses. “If you don’t know who sent them, don’t accept them next time.”I nodded obediently. There was no point arguing over a bouquet, and honestly, I quite liked that possessive streak in him.He kept staring at me, making me feel squirmy.I shifted a little. “Why are you looking at me like that?”Miles pulled his gaze away. “Nothing.”But I still felt uneasy, half-suspecting he’d found out something, like that damned brooch Trey gave me today that worth two million.I pressed again, “Really nothing? Then why were you staring?”He ruffled my hair. “Just thinking about where I should take you for a vacation.”I blinked, a little surprised, then shrugged. “Anywhere’s fine. But d
