ELOWEN

Three months later…

"You don't have to call me every hour to check in on me." I half chuckled as I pushed my glasses up my nose with one hand and held my phone to my ear with the other.

"Oh, but I do," Ryan’s voice came in response, his voice as soothing as I remembered.

I rolled my eyes.

"We're not really married Ryan," I jokingly threw back, shutting the door of my car.

He went silent for a while.

"Married or not, we're still related somehow," he said, his voice flat.

I paused and looked at the phone screen I had just lowered from my ear. I was still getting used to this. I had only ever seen Ryan as Owen's best friend, nothing more… but now, he was my husband on paper. I had signed those papers as soon as he dropped them in front of me.

I had seen it as a means of revenge against Owen… and Lilith, who I desperately hoped was dead by now.

Why had the enthusiasm in his voice vanished?

I cleared my throat.

"So are you at the building yet?" His voice was back to professional Rya

RYAN"Damn it!" I cussed, running a hand through my hair. How could she still be taking calls from Owen after everything??I groaned, punching the air with my fist in anger. Was that her choice, going back to Owen? Was that why she picked a fight with me and always pushed me away, trying to keep distance between us so she could make up her mind without my interference?Maybe I was trying too hard, maybe I was doing too much than my feelings actually required, throwing all this effort into something that was clearly a lost cause. I needed to cool down, to think straight, or maybe just stop thinking about her for five minutes."I need a drink," I muttered to myself. "Jesus!" I yelled, stopping abruptly in my tracks the moment I entered the kitchen. I hadn't expected to find anyone here. There was a figure seated silently on one of the high stools at the counter."Celeste?" I questioned, confused. She turned around slowly, lifting a glass of red wine toward her lips as she flashed me

ELOWENI gasped, covering my mouth in surprise as I walked through the rose covered marble tiles. "Ryan..." I whispered, following the roses to the dining room. The lights were turned off but the scented candles set on the table illuminated the room, casting a dim glow on the entire room."You shouldn't have," I spun around, flashing him a genuine smile. One that he had deserved a long time ago but I was too self centered to see it."Allow me," he pulled open my chair and I lowered myself into it gently as he pushed it in for me."This is beautiful." I commented as he took his seat in front of me."I really outdid myself," he chuckled, looking around. Soft music began to play from the home system."Would you like some wine?" I nodded, beaming with joy. Here I was thinking he had forgotten my birthday when he was just planning something much better and private.I felt my phone vibrate and I pulled it out, instantly declining the call from Owen. That was the fifty sixth call that day.

ELOWEN"That was a really nice movie," I stretched, dusting off the popcorn that had landed on me onto the floor."I didn't know you'd like those kind of movies," he replied, picking out a popped corn in my hair."Yeah, horror movies don't scare me much," I lied, fiddling with my hands, hoping he had not noticed how much popcorn I threw up in fear and how tightly I was gripping his arm."Yeahhh, right." He chuckled, throwing me a glance.“That’s so sarcastic, I could tell,” I countered, managing a genuine laugh this time and giving him a quick, playful punch on the shoulder.“Not only did you almost squeeze out all the blood in my arm, now you want to take it off as well,” he teased, moving ahead as we approached the entrance to the underground carpark.“I did not!” I protested, a little louder than I expected, and started chasing after him, trying to keep up with his long stride.“Did too, Gattina,” he called back over his shoulder, his voice full of warmth.I groaned in frustration

RYAN "Celeste, what are you talking about?" I questioned, walking through the crowd."First you said Wendy's, now you said the theatre." I groaned."Please let's just leave, I'm frustrated enough already." I continued, looking through the crowd."You're where?" The line was scrambling so much I could hardly pick her voice from the multiple voices around me."By–th–water fountain." I swept my eyes across the environment searching for the water fountain."What do you have on?" I asked, searching everyone by the fountain."A brown coat." She replied, her voice much clearer now. “Okay, I’m walking towards you now,” I confirmed, quickening my pace towards the cluster of people by the water feature. This better be a real emergency, or I was going to give Celeste a lecture she wouldn't forget.I spotted a figure in a deep brown, heavy coat standing alone, looking a little impatient. I lowered the phone, relieved that I had finally found her.“That’s a lot of stress you put me through righ

RYAN"Alfred!" I called out, stepping out to the terrace. "Sir," he appeared from the small green house behind the house."I want you to cancel all the plans for tonight's dinner," I said, my voice a bit lower than I expected.Alfred’s face fell a little. “Sir?” he asked, a hint of genuine sadness in his tone. "The desserts we ordered, the ones flown in from Paris, have already been paid for and the pastry chef has already started the final preparations.”I shrugged, feeling a familiar wave of defeat wash over me. “Cancel it or you could take it for yourself instead, Alfred, have a feast, I don’t care, just make sure the staff knows I won't need anything tonight.”I turned to go back inside, wanting nothing more than to retreat and forget this whole frustrating situation, when a sharp voice stopped me.“What do you mean he should cancel plans for tonight?”Celeste came up behind me, shutting the terrace door. She walked over quickly, her eyes narrowed with annoyance, and she stoppe

ELOWEN"Did you get your shoes back?" I chuckled as Celeste strolled back into the kitchen, blowing a loose hair out of her face. She hopped into the stool, dropping the parcel I had left in the living room earlier on the counter top. "It was a tough battle but trust me, he doesn't scare me," I chuckled again, sipping my juice.I chuckled again, enjoying the drama. “Good, we wouldn’t want a national crisis over a pair of stilettos.”Then, the words I was trying so hard to keep inside just tumbled out,“So, those were actually your shoes, then.”Celeste’s eyes widened slightly, and she let out a small, knowing laugh, “Yeahhh,” she emphasized, clearly sensing my discomfort. She searched my face intently, a look of pure curiosity replacing her earlier amusement. "Whose did you think they were, Elowen?”I immediately turned towards the refrigerator, pretending to be deeply concerned by the contents of the shelf. “Would you like more juice... or maybe water?” I asked, avoiding her direc
