Chapter 3

Author: Lovely Little Mom
Early the next morning, I called the bank's customer service line and had Sonya's supplementary card frozen on the spot.

A little while later, my phone buzzed.

It was a notification that Simon had posted a new update on his social media. The photo showed a high-end restaurant.

Across the table, part of a watch-wearing arm was visible. It belonged to Sonya.

The caption read, "Thanks to someone for taking me to a place I've been dying to visit. I'm in such a better mood now!"

I raised an eyebrow. Sonya still had the appetite to eat at a high-end restaurant?

Half an hour later, my phone rang. It was Sonya.

I let it ring until it was almost over before answering.

"Mitchell, what the hell are you trying to do?"

The moment I picked up, Sonya launched into a furious tirade.

"What are you talking about?" I asked lazily, even though I knew exactly what she meant.

"Why isn't my supplementary card working?" Sonya snapped. "I'm treating someone to lunch, and you suddenly cut off my card. Do you have any idea how embarrassing that is?"

"Oh, that card," I answered casually.

"The charges on last month's statement looked suspicious, so I thought someone had stolen the card details. I had the bank freeze it to protect my money. Why? Were you using it?"

"Bullshit! Of course I was using it," Sonya ground out. "Unfreeze it right now! Do you have to humiliate me in front of everyone?"

My tone hardened. "Sonya, you took my money to treat your boy toy to a high-end meal that costs 1000 dollars per person. And you think that's not embarrassing?"

"Simon and I are just friends!" Sonya insisted. "Mitchell, I'm warning you. Unfreeze the card now, or you'll regret it!"

"Good. Because I'm not done with you, either."

I hung up and immediately blocked her number.

About ten minutes later, my phone rang again.

This time, it was my mother-in-law, Mildred Crowley.

When Sonya and I first got married, Mildred had been dead set against it. She had assumed that a rich man like me would be controlling and that I'd mistreat Sonya.

Once she moved into the villa I had bought and started using the money I gave her to play poker, she couldn't stop telling everyone what a wonderful son-in-law I was.

"Mildred," I answered in my usual tone.

"Hi, Mitchell," Mildred boomed. "Sonya just called me and said you two had a fight?"

She continued, "Come on, every couple has their disagreements. As her husband, you should be the bigger person here. You can't just cut off Sonya's money whenever you get upset. What will people think of her now?"

It looked like Sonya couldn't pay the bill and had turned to Mildred for help.

Sonya clearly hadn't told Mildred the truth. She had probably made it sound like an ordinary argument.

"Mildred, it's not that I want to embarrass her."

I sighed.

"Sonya's been spending way too much lately. Last month, she charged over 20,000 dollars to the card. When I asked her where the money went, she wouldn't tell me. I'm just worried someone might be taking advantage of her."

"What? Over 20,000 dollars?" Mildred's voice shot up. "That ungrateful spendthrift! What on earth did she spend all that money on?"

"I have no idea." I pretended to sound surprised. "I thought maybe she had given it to you. Mildred, didn't she give you any money?"

Mildred was so angry she slapped her thigh.

"She only gave me 1000 dollars for living expenses last month. She even said business was bad and told me to watch my spending!"

Mildred dropped her attempts to make peace with us. After a few halfhearted remarks, she hung up.

After the call ended, a small smile tugged at my lips.

Sonya was most terrified of her mother, and Mildred loved money more than anything.

A month later, Shackleton was deep into its rainy late autumn. Cold rain tapped against the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the lights outside.I sat beside the warm fireplace with my golden retriever, Bobby, lying at my feet. The doorbell rang for a long time before I finally sent the housekeeper to answer it.Sonya stood outside, soaked to the skin and looking utterly miserable. She had grown so thin that she was barely recognizable. Her eyes were sunken, and her hair was a mess. When she saw me, a spark of hope lit up her dull eyes. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground. "Mitchell! Mitchell, I'm sorry. I know I messed up!"She tried to crawl toward me, but the housekeeper stopped her."Mitchell, please forgive me! Simon is a liar. He had an STI for a long time, and I lost the baby. He had been lying to me the whole time!"Sonya's voice was hoarse with despair.Just a week earlier, Simon had stolen the last of Sonya's personal savings. She had borrowed that

Three days later, Sonya came to see me.She looked much worse than before. Several scratches still marked her face, souvenirs from the fight at the hospital that day."Mitchell, we should sign the divorce papers as soon as possible," she said. She avoided my gaze, sounding uneasy.I raised an eyebrow and set down my coffee. "What? You saw those photos and still put up with him?"A flash of embarrassment crossed Sonya's face, but it soon gave way to an almost stubborn resolve."Simon explained everything to me. Those things happened in the past. Everyone had a past, right?"She took a deep breath, as if trying to convince me, though she seemed to be trying to convince herself more."He said the other person faked those chat records just to show off. Besides, I'm carrying his child.""So?" I gave her a faint, knowing smile. "You've forgiven him?""Mitchell, you know Mom has always wanted a grandchild." Sonya looked miserable. "Simon is the baby's father, and he's been emotional

Simon stayed at the hospital to take care of Sonya. When I went to see her, Sonya was propped up in bed, eating a bowl of dessert. As I entered the room, Simon deliberately caressed her still-flat belly, his gaze challenging me."Mitchell, I'm sorry you had to spend so much. Sonya said you had this dessert sent over just for her? Honestly, I'm not picky. As long as it's from Sonya, I'll love it."I showed no reaction. Before I could even say a word, Sonya hurried to intervene. She was afraid Simon would upset me and ruin our fake divorce."Simon!" she scolded him sternly. "Mitchell is doing this for us and for the greater good. You should be grateful!"Simon froze. He never expected Sonya, who usually gave him everything he wanted, to snap at him for my sake.Tears welled up in his eyes almost immediately. "Sonya, how dare you yell at me? Are you still hung up on this infertile guy?"He shouted, "Fine! If you're going to keep taking his side, then I'm leaving!"With that, he m

Three years ago, I was badly hurt in a car accident. It was late at night, and I was trapped inside the car, unable to move. The pain had been unbearable.I called Sonya for help. However, she thought calling an ambulance was too much trouble. She was also worried about being late to meet an important client, so she said she'd come get me herself.Halfway there, she got a call from the client. He wanted to grab a late-night bite and asked her to come along.By then the pain in my lower body had become so intense that I'd lost all feeling. I was also barely conscious.I sent her a voice message, begging her, "Sonya, I don't think I can hang on anymore. Please take me to the hospital first."Instead, she replied with a voice message of her own. She sounded annoyed."That client is someone I've worked hard to keep for a long time! Stop being so dramatic. A few injuries aren't going to kill you!"Then she turned the car around and went to eat with the client.I spent two agonizi

Mildred and I both froze at Sonya's words.Mildred's anger instantly turned to delight. "A baby? Sonya, you're pregnant?"Sonya was rushed to the hospital.Outside the ER, Mildred paced back and forth, muttering, "I hope it's a boy."When Simon saw me, he huddled in a corner without saying a word. Sonya was wheeled out in a hospital bed, her face pale. The doctor came out and removed his mask. "The patient has signs of a threatened miscarriage. She needs complete bed rest. Fortunately, you brought her in just in time."At that, Mildred clasped her hands and murmured a prayer of thanks. Sonya also breathed a sigh of relief.Seeing how relieved Sonya was, I felt a slight pang in my chest. Then the feeling faded, leaving no emotions behind."Sonya," I called out to her calmly.Sonya looked up in a panic and reached for my hand, but the hardened look in my eyes made her pull back."Mitchell, I…"I cut her off and looked at her belly without emotion. "Now that there's a baby invo

The next morning, I went to work as usual. As soon as I entered the lobby, Sonya's assistant hurried over. She looked flustered. "Mr. Latham, you're here.""Where's Sonya?" I asked as I headed toward my office."Ms. Slade is…" The assistant stumbled over her words. "She's in her office discussing work."I stopped. "With whom?""With the new assistant, Mr. Hunt," she replied reluctantly.Mr. Hunt? Did she mean Simon? So Sonya wasn't just using my money to support him. She had even brought him into my company."When did he start?" I asked, my voice hard."Just the day before yesterday. Ms. Slade personally arranged a special hire through HR. She said…she said the company needed him."I sneered. I wondered what kind of business she had in mind!I asked no more questions and headed straight for Sonya's office."Mr. Latham, please don't…"Sonya's assistant tried to stop me, but she had no chance.I shoved the door open. Two people were tangled up on the office couch.Simon
