Chapter 2

Autor: Lovely Little Mom
Sonya came home that evening.

"Honey, I'm home." She changed her shoes and came over to hug me.

I stayed on the couch and quietly shifted away before she could touch me.

Sonya froze with her hands in the air, then gave an awkward smile. "Oh, right. I brought you a gift, honey."

She pulled a gift box from behind her back and set it on the coffee table.

"These are famous pastries from Yeston. I went all over town to find them and stood in line forever."

I glanced at the box. A small price sticker was still on the side of the package. It read, "Highway Rest Stop Market, 10 dollars."

She couldn't even be bothered to come up with a decent lie.

I didn't call her out on it and simply asked, "How did your business meeting go?"

Sonya's eyes darted away for a moment.

"Fine. It went pretty well. The other company's boss was a real pain, though. He kept trying to get me to drink with him. It took forever to get away."

"Is that so?" I stared straight at her. "Since you were so exhausted, did Mr. Hunt enjoy his ride?"

Sonya looked on edge. "Why are you bringing that up again? I already explained it to you. I was just giving him a ride because we were going the same way."

"And that way just happened to take you to a hotel for couples?"

Sonya's voice rose sharply. "What are you talking about? What hotel for couples? Mitchell, can you stop being so paranoid all the time? I was there for business!"

I picked up my phone and slapped the photo of the traffic violation notice down in front of her.

Sonya's face flushed a deep red. For a moment, she couldn't come up with an excuse.

I folded my arms and stared at her.

"What was it? Did you rent a hotel room to discuss gas money?"

When she couldn't answer the question, Sonya stayed silent again.

After a long pause, she finally spoke.

"Simon just got divorced, and it's hard enough for a man to raise a child on his own. What's wrong with me helping him out as a neighbor?"

I looked up at her.

"His ex-wife is still alive and around, and she got custody of the child. What do you mean he's raising a kid on his own? Are you trying to be his kid's new mom, or do you wish his ex-wife would just drop dead?"

"Can you stop being so nasty? There's nothing going on between Simon and me. Don't bring your workplace interrogation tactics home and use them on me!" Sonya snapped.

The doorbell rang as soon as she finished speaking.

Sonya shot me a glare and turned to open the door.

Simon was standing outside. "Sonya."

He kept his eyes fixed on Sonya, acting as if I weren't even there.

"I just made you some chicken soup as a thank-you. It should help with your sniffles."

With that, he finally seemed to notice me. Simon covered his mouth and put on a look of surprise.

"Oh, Mitchell, you're home, too? I hope I'm not interrupting. Sonya looked a little under the weather when she got back. I was worried she had overworked herself, so I brought her some soup."

Sonya glanced at me awkwardly before taking the soup. "Not at all. You're so thoughtful. I'm sure Mitchell appreciates it, too."

"Would you like to try some, Mitchell?"

Simon smiled at me, his gaze blatantly provocative.

"I spent hours making it. It's really good for you.

"You're busy with work all the time, so maybe this isn't your thing. Unlike me, I have an easy job and plenty of time to learn about staying healthy."

He was taking every chance to mock me for being a workaholic who had no idea how to enjoy life.

I walked over and took the soup container from Sonya.

Sonya seemed relieved, thinking I had finally backed down. "That's more like it. We're neighbors, after all."

The next thing she knew, I had tipped the container over.

I poured all the chicken soup into the dog bowl beside us. Our golden retriever was wagging his tail nearby.

Bobby sniffed the soup, then eagerly lapped it up.

I replied unhurriedly, "Perfect timing. Bobby could use some extra nutrients. The vet said I should supplement his diet. This soup is just right for him, Mr. Hunt."

Simon's eyes turned red-rimmed with tears. He looked at Sonya as if he might fall apart at any moment.

"Sonya, does Mitchell hate me? Did I do something wrong?"

The moment Sonya saw how hurt Simon looked, she lost it.

"Mitchell Latham! Have you lost your damn mind? Simon made that soup for us out of kindness. How could you feed it to Bobby? You're humiliating Simon!"

I looked straight at her. "Sonya, if you think the soup tastes so good, get down on all fours and fight Bobby for it. Be my guest."

"You're impossible!" Sonya was so furious that her chest heaved.

She grabbed Simon by the wrist.

"Simon, let's go! Don't waste another second on this lunatic!"

Sonya stormed out and slammed the front door behind her.

  • After My Wife Gave Our Neighbor a Ride, I Divorced Her   Chapter 9

A month later, Shackleton was deep into its rainy late autumn. Cold rain tapped against the floor-to-ceiling windows, blurring the lights outside.I sat beside the warm fireplace with my golden retriever, Bobby, lying at my feet. The doorbell rang for a long time before I finally sent the housekeeper to answer it.Sonya stood outside, soaked to the skin and looking utterly miserable. She had grown so thin that she was barely recognizable. Her eyes were sunken, and her hair was a mess. When she saw me, a spark of hope lit up her dull eyes. Her legs gave out, and she collapsed to the ground. "Mitchell! Mitchell, I'm sorry. I know I messed up!"She tried to crawl toward me, but the housekeeper stopped her."Mitchell, please forgive me! Simon is a liar. He had an STI for a long time, and I lost the baby. He had been lying to me the whole time!"Sonya's voice was hoarse with despair.Just a week earlier, Simon had stolen the last of Sonya's personal savings. She had borrowed that

Three days later, Sonya came to see me.She looked much worse than before. Several scratches still marked her face, souvenirs from the fight at the hospital that day."Mitchell, we should sign the divorce papers as soon as possible," she said. She avoided my gaze, sounding uneasy.I raised an eyebrow and set down my coffee. "What? You saw those photos and still put up with him?"A flash of embarrassment crossed Sonya's face, but it soon gave way to an almost stubborn resolve."Simon explained everything to me. Those things happened in the past. Everyone had a past, right?"She took a deep breath, as if trying to convince me, though she seemed to be trying to convince herself more."He said the other person faked those chat records just to show off. Besides, I'm carrying his child.""So?" I gave her a faint, knowing smile. "You've forgiven him?""Mitchell, you know Mom has always wanted a grandchild." Sonya looked miserable. "Simon is the baby's father, and he's been emotional

Simon stayed at the hospital to take care of Sonya. When I went to see her, Sonya was propped up in bed, eating a bowl of dessert. As I entered the room, Simon deliberately caressed her still-flat belly, his gaze challenging me."Mitchell, I'm sorry you had to spend so much. Sonya said you had this dessert sent over just for her? Honestly, I'm not picky. As long as it's from Sonya, I'll love it."I showed no reaction. Before I could even say a word, Sonya hurried to intervene. She was afraid Simon would upset me and ruin our fake divorce."Simon!" she scolded him sternly. "Mitchell is doing this for us and for the greater good. You should be grateful!"Simon froze. He never expected Sonya, who usually gave him everything he wanted, to snap at him for my sake.Tears welled up in his eyes almost immediately. "Sonya, how dare you yell at me? Are you still hung up on this infertile guy?"He shouted, "Fine! If you're going to keep taking his side, then I'm leaving!"With that, he m

Three years ago, I was badly hurt in a car accident. It was late at night, and I was trapped inside the car, unable to move. The pain had been unbearable.I called Sonya for help. However, she thought calling an ambulance was too much trouble. She was also worried about being late to meet an important client, so she said she'd come get me herself.Halfway there, she got a call from the client. He wanted to grab a late-night bite and asked her to come along.By then the pain in my lower body had become so intense that I'd lost all feeling. I was also barely conscious.I sent her a voice message, begging her, "Sonya, I don't think I can hang on anymore. Please take me to the hospital first."Instead, she replied with a voice message of her own. She sounded annoyed."That client is someone I've worked hard to keep for a long time! Stop being so dramatic. A few injuries aren't going to kill you!"Then she turned the car around and went to eat with the client.I spent two agonizi

Mildred and I both froze at Sonya's words.Mildred's anger instantly turned to delight. "A baby? Sonya, you're pregnant?"Sonya was rushed to the hospital.Outside the ER, Mildred paced back and forth, muttering, "I hope it's a boy."When Simon saw me, he huddled in a corner without saying a word. Sonya was wheeled out in a hospital bed, her face pale. The doctor came out and removed his mask. "The patient has signs of a threatened miscarriage. She needs complete bed rest. Fortunately, you brought her in just in time."At that, Mildred clasped her hands and murmured a prayer of thanks. Sonya also breathed a sigh of relief.Seeing how relieved Sonya was, I felt a slight pang in my chest. Then the feeling faded, leaving no emotions behind."Sonya," I called out to her calmly.Sonya looked up in a panic and reached for my hand, but the hardened look in my eyes made her pull back."Mitchell, I…"I cut her off and looked at her belly without emotion. "Now that there's a baby invo

The next morning, I went to work as usual. As soon as I entered the lobby, Sonya's assistant hurried over. She looked flustered. "Mr. Latham, you're here.""Where's Sonya?" I asked as I headed toward my office."Ms. Slade is…" The assistant stumbled over her words. "She's in her office discussing work."I stopped. "With whom?""With the new assistant, Mr. Hunt," she replied reluctantly.Mr. Hunt? Did she mean Simon? So Sonya wasn't just using my money to support him. She had even brought him into my company."When did he start?" I asked, my voice hard."Just the day before yesterday. Ms. Slade personally arranged a special hire through HR. She said…she said the company needed him."I sneered. I wondered what kind of business she had in mind!I asked no more questions and headed straight for Sonya's office."Mr. Latham, please don't…"Sonya's assistant tried to stop me, but she had no chance.I shoved the door open. Two people were tangled up on the office couch.Simon
