Chapter 2

Author: Spirit Creek
"I saw Teresa and Hansel's vacation pictures on social media."

I fell silent, suddenly remembering how I'd spent every previous divorce obsessively checking Teresa's and Hansel's social media accounts, practically torturing myself with their updates.

But I hadn't done that this time.

When I didn't respond, Stephen asked with concern, "Don't tell me you two got divorced again."

Of everyone in our social circle, Stephen was the only one who knew that Teresa and I had been married and divorced multiple times.

"Yeah, we're divorced."

He sighed and spent the next several minutes trying to comfort me.

I smiled, just about to tell him about my plans to move abroad, when we unexpectedly ran into Teresa outside a jewelry store.

"Andrew," she called out to me almost instinctively.

Meanwhile, Hansel was holding her hand. He greeted me with a polite smile. "Hey, Andrew. Are you shopping for a watch, too?"

He was certainly handsome. It was no wonder Teresa had never gotten over him.

In the past, whenever I ran into Hansel, I'd glare at him as though he were my worst enemy.

Teresa gave me a long look before instinctively moving in front of him, shielding him with her body.

I stopped Stephen before he could do anything rash and answered with a smile, "I've got something to celebrate, so I figured I'd treat myself."

Stephen immediately chimed in, "That's right! He's celebrating finally getting rid of a lousy wife, and wouldn't you know it, some other guy has already volunteered to take her off his hands. If that isn't good news, I don't know what is!"

I kicked him, although I couldn't help agreeing with every word.

Teresa parted her lips to speak, but when she saw Stephen and me laughing, she ultimately said nothing.

The sales associate quickly picked up on the tension between us and called over a colleague so we could be helped separately.

Stephen quietly told me that while Teresa was browsing the store, she kept getting distracted and glancing in our direction.

"Think your ex-wife is starting to regret losing you?" he asked.

"Maybe."

I figured she was just feeling guilty.

"I'm sorry, sir, but that particular model is sold out."

Stephen had pointed to a watch in a picture, hoping to buy it, only to be disappointed.

I glanced at the picture and immediately recognized the watch. It was the same model Teresa had given me three days before our divorce.

In the past, I'd treasured every little kindness Teresa showed me. Even the smallest gift from her would've meant the world to me.

But this time, I took the watch out of my bag and handed it to Stephen.

"Here. You can have mine."

Just then, Teresa and Hansel happened to walk past us.

Perhaps I was imagining things, but I could've sworn Teresa turned around several times, frowning as she looked at the watch in Stephen's hand.

Stephen tried to refuse, but I insisted on giving it to him.

After all, it was nothing more than a consolation gift from someone who'd hurt me. It didn't mean anything anymore.

Besides, the woman who'd given it to me was now my ex-wife.

…

I'd thought that encounter at the mall would be the last time I ever saw Teresa.

With only ten days left before my departure, I submitted my resignation to my boss.

Later that day, I was taking a walk around my apartment complex, feeling a little melancholy, when someone standing in the shadows beneath the trees startled me.

I was about to scream when the person spoke first.

"Honey, it's me."

Teresa stepped out of the shadows and grabbed my hand tightly. I pulled free and immediately backed away.

She lowered her gaze to the hand I'd pulled away, looking somewhat hurt.

"What are you doing here? You could've at least told me you were coming," I said, making no effort to hide my irritation.

"I was in the neighborhood."

Something flickered in Teresa's eyes. "I was hoping to surprise you."

I was momentarily speechless, but she had a point.

In the past, having Teresa come to see me of her own accord would've been a dream come true. I'd practically prayed for something like that to happen.

Under the moonlight, she studied me with a slightly bewildered expression.

I sighed, feeling a sudden urge to tell her the truth about my plans to leave. But I ultimately held back, unwilling to create any unnecessary complications.

"Shouldn't you be spending time with Hansel instead of coming here? I wouldn't want him getting the wrong idea."

I tried to reason with her as politely as possible.

"What's there to misunderstand? Nothing is going on between us," Teresa lied.

I sighed, but I didn't bother calling her out on it.

"She's in love with Hansel!"I looked at Teresa, who seemed desperate to convince me that Mikayla was a terrible person, and suddenly found the whole situation funny."Do you seriously think I'm still the same clueless guy I was when I fell for you? That I'd get involved with Mikayla without knowing anything about her?"Teresa opened her mouth to argue, but I raised a hand between us."I already know what you're going to say, so don't bother. Besides, what I do with my life is none of your business. I put up with nine divorces and remarriages because of you. Did you seriously think I'd keep doing that for the rest of my life?"I'm still young, Teresa, and I've already been married nine times. Can't I date someone new and have a little fun for a change?"Her expression shifted with every word I said. Then, she suddenly smiled."Mikayla, you heard him, didn't you? "Mikayla really loves you."The video had been filmed discreetly from behind a decorative plant in a corner. The footage was too obstructed to make out anyone clearly, but I could hear Mikayla's voice."Hansel, are you seriously trying to drag me into your mess with Teresa the same way you did with Andrew? Is everybody else just a pawn in your relationship?"Stop coming after me. I've given you the same answer every year, and it's never going to change. I'm not interested in you. Besides, I'm getting married. My future husband is a wonderful man, so show some respect and leave us alone."I stood there in shock for a long time before finally replying to my friend."Thank you."That video had finally put my doubts about Mikayla to rest, but now that I was about to meet her grandmother, I found myself feeling nervous again. What kind of woman would Cassandra be?It was my first time visiting the Harris family, and I wanted to make a good impression. But when Mikayla drove us into

Mikayla told me she'd noticed me even before everyone started teasing us that night. In fact, she'd noticed me at several earlier gatherings, too. I'd always sat quietly off to the side without saying much, but whenever we played games, I was consistently one of the best players.I somehow managed to keep a low profile while still standing out from the crowd. She couldn't quite figure me out, and that had only made her more interested in me."You've got a mind of your own, Andrew. Even after spending all those years putting up with Teresa, you haven't lost what makes you who you are. How could I not fall for you?"From that day on, Mikayla and I started going out together regularly.Stephen accused me of forgetting all about my best life partner now that I'd found someone new.Of course, I had. What was so great about my ex-wife that I should still be thinking about her?"After dating Mikayla for more than a month, I could barely remember what Teresa looked like, much less care

"Now that you're here, take Andrew out and have some fun! He's been cooped up in the house so long he's practically forgotten what the outside world looks like!"Stephen had always loved going out, so he instantly agreed to Mom's request.Still, I hadn't expected him to settle in quite so quickly. He hadn't even been in Zeldon for three days before he knew the place better than I did, despite my having lived there for half a month.I had no idea where he'd met so many expats, but he kept dragging me to one social gathering after another. Before I'd even learned everyone's names, Stephen was already acting like he'd known them for years."Come on, guys! If you know any nice single women, introduce them to Andrew. He needs someone to help him get over his ex."Stephen enthusiastically introduced me to everyone, determined to find me a new girlfriend.Someone immediately took him up on the suggestion. "Then, Mikayla's your girl! You two can help each other get over your exes. Righ

Mom had always believed that life was too short to spend it chasing a love that might never last. Experiencing a passionate romance once was enough to make life worthwhile, and expecting to spend forever with the same person wasn't always realistic or necessary.Besides, Teresa had never wanted to spend the rest of her life with me in the first place.I hadn't understood what Mom meant back then. I'd always believed Teresa was different. She'd filled the void Dad had left in my life, giving me all the love and attention I'd lost.It was only later that I realized she'd showered me with affection because she wanted to turn me into another version of Hansel, one who would love her and do whatever she wanted.I'd been so caught up in loving Teresa and believing she loved me in return that I'd forgotten I was my own person. Now that I'd finally broken free of Teresa, I understood what Mom had been trying to tell me all those years. The thought made me smile."Mom, can I just be y

From somewhere in the background, I heard Stephen let out a weary sigh."Andrew! Just so we're clear, I didn't tell her to come looking for you! She showed up at my house and snatched my phone right out of my hand!"Then, he addressed Teresa, "Teresa, I'm only putting up with this because you used to be married to my best friend. If you don't get out of my house right now, I'm calling the cops!"Teresa ignored him and repeated her question. "Where are you?"I took a deep breath, trying to push aside all the resentment I'd carried for so many years. When I finally spoke, my voice was calmer than I'd ever imagined it could be."What is it? Did Hansel finally ask you to marry him? Are you crying because you're so happy?"Teresa's voice grew increasingly urgent, and I could hear the panic and confusion in her tearful response."No! I didn't agree to marry him! We agreed to get remarried today, didn't we?"Her tone turned cautious.I stood there, stunned. In all the years we'd bee
