Chapter 32: Tailored Slacks

Kain barely waited before reaching for the clothes.

The room smelled faintly of leather and metal polish. His world, distilled into order.

Mario stood in front of him like a soldier presenting armor.

Held them out with military precision. Folded, pressed, perfect. Black shirt. Tailored slacks. Watch already synced to his heart rate, ticking softly against time itself.

Everything Kain liked. Clean. Controlled. Ready.

“What kept you so long?” Kain asked, shrugging out of the borrowed shirt, muscles shifting as fabric slid off his shoulders.

Mario didn’t answer immediately.

That alone made Kain pause.

“…Madeline was at your penthouse,” Mario said at last.

Kain stilled for half a second. Then he laughed—low, amused.

“Good,” he said. “Even better that I sent you.”

He took the shirt and pulled it on, not bothering to button it. His fingers moved faster than usual. Energy thrummed under his skin like a second pulse. Restless. Wired. Alive in a way he hadn’t been before Jade.

Kain smirked. “Just you and the yacht dealer. The bags? Only me… now you.” Mario shook his head slowly. “You’re moving too fast.” Kain didn’t deny it. “You don’t get it,” he said quietly. His fingers tightened around his cuff, grounding himself. “I’m obsessed with ‘mia ragazza incantevole’.” Mario winced. “That’s… new.” “I’ve never seen you like this,” Mario continued. “You never cared about women. Or romance. Or gestures.” Kain exhaled through his nose. “My grandfather bought my grandmother a yacht the week he met her. My father did the same for my mother.” He looked up, eyes dark and steady. “This is tradition.” “No,” Mario countered. “This is how you scare her away. She’ll think you’re trying to buy her. Or hiding something.” The words struck deeper than Mario intended. Buy her. Kain stilled. Jade’s guarded eyes flashed in his mind. Her distance. The way she’d called him a playboy without blinking. The way she flinched, not from desire, but expectation he co

“Yes,” Scarlett cried, gripping her tighter. “And it hurts me more than it ever hurt you. I hate who I became. I hate that I betrayed you just to feel something, just to feel like I still had a sister.” Jade’s knees nearly gave out. Fear crawled up her spine, fed by the height, the memories she never let herself touch. Cold concrete. Screaming metal. The moment her body had fallen and the world had gone quiet. “I just wanted us back,” Scarlett pleaded, voice breaking. “I miss what we had. I want to fix it. I want a sister.” The word “Sister” sliced straight through Jade’s ribs. Her walls cracked. “I didn’t isolate myself to hurt you,” Jade whispered, tears spilling despite her. “I did it because I never felt seen. Not by our family. Not by anyone.” Scarlett went still. “Mum and Dad adored you..you’re so perfect,” Jade continued, the truth shaking loose now that it had started. “Every room you walked into, you were enough. Always enough. And I kept wondering what was wrong wit

Her legs weakened. Her breath turned shallow, panic crashing through her body too fast to stop. “You know I can’t,” Jade choked. “You know I’m afraid of heights. You know what happened.” Memory slammed into Jade. Cracking concrete, screams, the sickening weightless drop when Scarlett had pushed her before. Scarlett didn’t slow. “I thought you’d be over that by now,” she said mildly. “I apologized, didn’t I? Why keep living in the past?” Jade’s knees buckled at the edge. She clutched Scarlett’s arm, trembling, vision blurring as the city spun beneath her. “Please,” Jade whispered. “Let me go.” Scarlett wrapped an arm around her waist, holding her there. “Relax,” Scarlett murmured. “You’re not dying. Not yet.” Jade’s breath fractured into sobs. “Why did you bring me here?” she whispered. “Send me back. Please.” Scarlett tilted her head. “To. End. Us. Both.” Jade froze. Then Scarlett laughed. “I’m kidding.” She took another slow sip of wine. “I came to sta

Just the hum of the fridge and the sound of her own breathing, still a little too uneven. That was when she heard it. A sound from above. Soft. Intentional. Glass clinking. Jade froze. It came again. Followed by a low hum, almost playful. A tune without words. Her pulse spiked. The roof. For half a second, something warm and unwilling fluttered in her chest. He’d beaten her home. Found his way in. Found the roof. Of course he had. “Unbelievable,” she murmured, shaking her head despite herself. Annoyed. Impressed. A little undone. Her reflection caught her eye in the hallway mirror. She looked wrecked. Pale. Eyes too bright. Fear clinging to her skin no matter how hard she tried to shake it. I don’t care, she told herself firmly. I’m not fixing myself for him. Still…she turned toward the bathroom. She rinsed her face, splashing water until the cold bit. Grabbed her mouth spray. Once. Twice. Dabbed perfume at her wrist. Smoothed her hair. Tugged her dress into place,
