Chapter 3

Penulis: Frosted Crane Call
That afternoon, Maya was completely distracted.

Her gaze kept drifting toward the doctors’ office, though I couldn’t tell who she was looking for.

During rounds, I checked the IV hanging beside one of the patients and frowned.

“Maya Winters.”

She snapped back to attention.

“Dr. Hay... Dr. Hayes.”

I closed the patient’s door behind me, my voice turning cold.

“What happened with the dosage for the patient in Bed 11? Is this your first day on the job? Who’s going to take responsibility if something happens?”

Maya hurriedly checked the chart.

All the color drained from her face.

“Dr. Hayes, I’m so sorry.”

I took a slow breath.

“I’m not the one you owe an apology to. The patient is.”

Then I turned to the head nurse.

“Please don’t assign Maya to any of my shifts again. Thank you.”

Her eyes reddened instantly.

She bit her lip, struggling to hold back her tears.

Ryan hurried over after hearing the commotion.

He checked the dosage, then frowned.

“It was a minor mistake. Was there really any need to get this angry?”

He gave Maya a reassuring pat on the back.

I looked up at the familiar face before me and was suddenly struck by the absurdity of it all.

“Ryan Spencer.

“Medical professionals can’t afford to be careless. Every mistake, no matter how small, could cost someone their life.

“Who was it who taught me that?”

His expression changed.

For once, he had nothing to say.

Ryan was the hospital owner’s son. He’d grown up surrounded by praise and privilege.

Back in school, he was always secretly competing with me, and I’d never once backed down.

Then one day, he’d smiled and explained himself.

“My family has always been incredibly demanding. Don’t assume I’m some spoiled rich kid who coasts through life.

“Sophie, we want the same things. I worked my way here too.

“Could you stop hating me so much?”

I had truly believed we were the same kind of person.

The hallway lights shone down on the medical chart in my hands, making the white paper almost painfully bright.

Disappointment filled me.

Slowly, I shook my head.

Ryan opened his mouth to say something, but Maya suddenly covered her mouth and ran away in tears.

He gave me a long, troubled look before hurrying after her.

From the rooftop, the city lights stretched out beneath the night sky.

I stood alone in the cool breeze, trying to clear my head.

The door suddenly swung open.

Maya stepped outside, her eyes red.

“Ryan said you come up here whenever you’re upset.”

I froze.

Whenever I encountered a difficult patient or a complicated case, I used to come here to unwind.

It had been Ryan’s and my secret.

In front of everyone else, we were fierce rivals.

But up here, away from everyone else, we had simply been a couple in love.

Maya stepped closer.

“Sophie, I’m sorry. I know those words aren’t enough.

“But I really couldn’t help how I felt.”

Her voice broke.

“You’re so capable. You can get anything you want. You have your career, your talent, and everyone’s respect.

“But I’m different. I’m just an ordinary person.

“I only wanted someone by my side.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“Out of everyone in the world, why did it have to be Ryan?”

Her expression changed.

After a long silence, she seemed to force herself to speak.

“You can hate me or blame me. I don’t regret it.

“You’ve helped me a lot, but I don’t owe you anything.

“After this, we’re even.”

I nearly laughed myself to tears.

After Maya left, Ryan stood quietly a few feet away from me.

He lit a cigarette.

“We were together for years, Sophie, but you were always the calm one.

“You never said you needed me. You never said you missed me or that you were scared.

“You never needed my family’s connections or anything I could give you.

“Whenever I bought you a gift, you always made sure to give me something of equal value in return.

“For a while, I wondered whether you even cared about me that much.”

But when he spoke of Maya, his gaze softened.

“She’s different.

“When she looks at me, I’m her whole world.”

I fell silent.

After a while, I gave him a self-mocking smile but said nothing.

Maya had always been the kind of person who made love her entire world.

She had been willing to leave everything behind and move across the country for it.

I was different.

Love was only one part of my life.

Maybe it made up ten percent of everything I was.

But within that ten percent, Ryan had been one hundred percent.

He simply hadn’t understood.

I turned and walked away.

The night wind swept across the rooftop and pushed the door shut behind me.

I would never come back here again.

Adrian’s father recovered far better than anyone had expected. Two weeks later, he was transferred from the ICU to a regular room.Adrian visited him every day, and before long, he and I became familiar with each other. One day, he flashed me a warm smile.“I’m an attorney. If you ever run into a malpractice dispute, Dr. Hayes, feel free to call me.“And if an angry patient or family member gets physical...”He unbuttoned the cuff of his dress shirt and rolled up his sleeve, revealing a surprisingly muscular arm.“I can handle that too.”The entire nurses’ station burst out laughing.Even Dr. Carter couldn’t resist teasing me.“Dr. Hayes, Attorney Holt seems like quite a catch. His father’s the patient, but he shows up more reliably than clockwork.”I only smiled.Still, I could feel it.A pebble had fallen into the still water of my heart, sending out the faintest ripple. On the day his father was discharged, the older man held my hand and refused to let go.“Dr. Hayes,

The surgery was scheduled for two weeks later.During the preoperative conference, Ryan formally requested to join the surgical team.Dr. Carter sensed the tension between us and hesitated.“Ryan’s young, but he’s already highly experienced. Having him assist you would be ideal. It’s just that the two of you...”I smiled faintly and nodded.“It won’t be a problem. Once we enter the OR, we’re nothing but doctors.”I knew Ryan’s abilities better than anyone.Everything else aside, he was an exceptional surgeon and one of the few people I had ever genuinely admired. On the day of the operation, I took a deep breath as the surgical lights came on.The diseased blood vessel filled my field of vision. In the quiet operating room, every beep of the monitors sounded unusually clear.Ryan stood across from me, only his eyes visible above his mask.He gave me the slightest nod.“Hemostat.”Before I’d even finished speaking, he had already placed it in my hand.I froze for the brief

A month later, I ran into Ryan again. He had a complicated patient whose surgical plan had left him stumped, so he came to our hospital to consult Dr. Carter about co-leading the operation.Every cardiologist in the department crowded into Dr. Carter’s office. After reviewing the patient’s chart, the room fell silent. Finally, Dr. Carter frowned.“This procedure is far too risky. I don’t know anyone in the country who could confidently take it on.“Professor Luke in Germany might be able to do it.”Before Ryan left, he gave me a conflicted look. His lips parted as if he wanted to say something, but in the end, he walked away without a word.Three days later, we gathered in the conference room for a video consultation with Professor Luke.Ryan explained the patient’s condition and sincerely asked him to fly over and perform the surgery.Professor Luke listened carefully, then shook his head. His health hadn’t been good lately. He couldn’t handle such a long flight, much less

My new job was at the largest teaching hospital in the city. The department was spacious, with sunlight pouring through the windows.Dr. Carter, the department chair, was an old friend of my mentor’s. The first time we met, he gave me a welcoming pat on the shoulder.“Your mentor video-calls me all the time just to brag about you. Says you’re the hardest-working student he’s ever had. Welcome home.”I smiled, accepted my ID badge, and clipped it to my white coat. The woman in the locker-room mirror was thinner than she had been three years ago, but her eyes were still clear and bright.Rehabilitation in Germany had restored almost ninety percent of the function in my right hand. It still grew sore and numb during long surgeries, but I could handle most procedures without a problem. On my third day at the hospital, someone knocked on my office door.Ryan stood in the hallway, looking utterly lost.“Sophie. So you really are here.”I glanced at the people passing through the co

Three years later, my flight glided smoothly over the Atlantic.I gazed at the fading light outside the window and instinctively touched my right arm.The shattered bone had healed fairly well, but it still ached whenever the weather turned cold and rainy. After the attack three years ago, I accepted my mentor’s invitation to join his research program in Germany. He had tried hard to convince me to stay long before that. But back then, I couldn’t bear to leave my patients, the man I loved, or my best friend, so I turned him down.I had come home from Germany with a suitcase full of gifts, eager to see them again.Instead, the two most important people in my life betrayed me together.During my three years in Germany, I turned myself into a machine that never made mistakes.By day, I worked with my mentor at the hospital. In the evenings, I went to physical therapy. At two or three in the morning, I was often still awake in my apartment, buried in medical journals.I simply

After our argument on the rooftop, Maya and Ryan stopped hiding their relationship and announced that they were together. They brought coffee and snacks for the entire department.A few of the newer nurses, unaware of what had happened, cheerfully waved me over.“Dr. Hayes, come get yours. We saved you an iced Americano.”Ryan frowned and spoke without thinking.“Her stomach can’t handle iced coffee. The hot tea is hers.”Maya’s smile stiffened. The room went silent for a moment.I raised my thermos with a smile.“I brought my own.”One night, after finishing my shift, I had barely parked my car when an uneasy chill ran down my spine. For the past few days, I’d had the uneasy feeling that someone was watching me.I took a deep breath and started toward my apartment. Then a dark figure stepped into my path.My heart jumped. It was Maya’s ex-husband, Mark Wilson. He gripped a baseball bat and glared at me viciously.“Long time no see, Sophie.”My stomach dropped.I ins
