Chapter 1

Author: Nameless
When the $2,000 payment labelled ‘medical expenses’ finally came through, the doctor had just removed the ventilator from my daughter’s face. It was what had kept Ellie alive through the night.

I stood frozen outside the hospital room, completely numb.

I watched as the nurse slowly unfolded a white sheet and recorded the time of death.

Then, suddenly, the phone in my hand began to buzz.

I tapped the screen and answered mechanically.

A sharp, middle-aged woman’s voice immediately came through the receiver.

“Mr. Spencer, how many times do I have to explain the reimbursement process before you finally understand?

“Once the payment arrives, you’re supposed to notify our finance department immediately!

“I wired the money more than three minutes ago! Why haven’t you replied that you received it yet?

“Also, the font on this expense request form is wrong, the formatting isn’t aligned, and the paper itself has water stains…

“And another thing, how many times have you applied for medical expenses this month? Even if your child were made of paper, she wouldn’t need to go to the hospital this often!

“Miss Lane specifically instructed us to inform you that from now on, all medical expense requests will only be approved for one-tenth of the amount you apply for!

“If you can’t fix this habit of casually lying, don’t even think about getting another cent from her in the future!”

I watched silently as the cart carrying Ellie’s body was pushed farther and farther away.

Only after a long time did I finally come back to my senses.

In a calm voice, I said to the finance manager on the other end of the phone, “I’m sorry for causing you trouble.

“Also, please pass this message to Miss Lane: please ask her to come back and finalize our divorce whenever she has time.”

This year marked the ninth year of my secret marriage to Claire.

Before that, I was the award-winning talent manager who personally brought her into the entertainment industry.

With my careful planning and connections, I helped her stand out among countless new actresses in less than two years.

When Claire won her first newcomer award, I could no longer hide my feelings and proposed to her.

From that moment on, I became the invisible husband standing behind the famous actress Claire Lane.

I always believed Claire was a star I had personally lifted into the sky.

Thus, I thought I should step aside and give her the stage she deserved.

Still…

When did Claire start to despise me?

I could not remember the exact moment.

I only remember the day I spent long hours making an herbal soup, hoping to surprise her on set.

Instead, I accidentally saw her walking with rising star Xavier Grant, their behavior far too intimate.

Before I could even ask what was going on, Claire’s expression turned cold.

She grabbed me and dragged me into her dressing room.

She immediately started yelling at me without giving me a chance to explain.

She called me a stalker.

She said my twisted obsession and controlling behavior were suffocating her.

Faced with Claire’s overwhelming anger, all I could do was apologize again and again.

I even knelt and begged Xavier for forgiveness, just to earn her approval.

Later, Claire became pregnant.

At first, she wanted to terminate the pregnancy.

It was only after I begged her over and over again that she reluctantly agreed to keep the baby.

However, she had one condition. I had to hand over all assets under my name.

From that day onward, any expense over $10 had to be approved by her personally.

I understood.

Claire wanted to trap me inside the villa where we secretly lived as husband and wife.

However, the enormous emotional investment I had already put into this marriage, the years I had sacrificed, the love I had poured into her, and the price I had paid made me willingly lock myself inside a cage of my own making.

As I stood in the empty banquet hall, I listened to Claire’s almost hysterical words. All I felt was the absurd urge to laugh. There were no other emotions left in me.After Claire finally finished venting, I calmly pulled my arm out of her grasp.I looked at her with complete detachment and replied, “Are you sure everyone who hurt me has paid the price?“I don’t think so. After all, aren’t you still standing here, talking to me as if nothing happened?“Were those people truly cruel to me because they were born evil?“Or was it because all you ever showed in front of every one of them was how much you hated me?“If you had shown them that you truly loved me, even if Xavier had loved you more than anything, he never would have had a chance to get close to you.“You were the one who threw me away like garbage and left me alone at home after getting what you wanted from me. You were the one who refused to let anyone know I existed.“Don’t blame others for the things you personall

There was only one woman on the screen. Her eyes were swollen red from crying as she held up her ID card.Facing the camera, she spoke loudly.“Everyone. My name is Zoe Grant. I am Mr. Xavier’s cousin. I previously worked as the finance supervisor at Crystal Wave Entertainment. “During my time there, Mr. Xavier repeatedly instructed me to withhold Gideon Spencer’s expense requests and alter the reasons for his applications. “He did this to make Miss Claire misunderstand Mr. Spencer and cause the breakdown of their marriage. I’d like to sincerely apologize to Mr. Gideon today! Please forgive me!”Xavier grabbed Claire’s shoulders and shook her desperately, trying to save himself. “Claire, listen to me! Let me explain! It’s not like that! She must have taken money from Gideon to frame me! Claire, you have to believe me!Claire pushed him away. “You were the one who told me to take away all of Gideon’s money in the first place. You said that if I did, he would only become more de

I stared up at the white ceiling of the hospital room.My mind could not focus at all.Whether it was Claire’s accusations or her words of comfort, everything sounded the same to me, like a power drill endlessly roaring inside my head.I interrupted her without warning.“Let’s get a divorce.”“Gideon, did you even understand what I just said? I just told you I don’t blame you!”Her frown looked so ugly. She was nothing like the bright and cheerful girl I remembered from the past. That arrogant, self-righteous expression extinguished the final trace of expectation I held for her.I turned to look at her.My voice was colder than it had ever been.“Back at Ellie’s funeral, you lost control and attacked several of your most loyal fans. If they post about what happened on any social media platform and the situation blows up, your career will be completely ruined.“If you agree to divorce, I’ll cooperate with you.“I’ll announce publicly that I obtained your eggs through illega

The entire room fell deathly silent. The fanboy supervisor turned around, stunned for a moment. He hurriedly brushed the ashes from his hands.“Miss Lane, what brings you here? Do you have another event you’d like us to host?”Claire’s face had gone ashen. Her eyes fell on the wreckage scattered across the floor and the shattered portrait on the offering table. In the photograph, the little girl was smiling innocently, clutching a tiny duck plushie in her hands. It was one of the few gifts Claire had ever brought home for Ellie.Of all her toys, Ellie loved that little duck the most.Perhaps it was because of the bond between mother and daughter. She carried it everywhere, refusing to let it out of her hands.During her teething phase, she would grab it, chew on it, and gnaw at it every single day.Claire stared at the photograph. Step by step, she staggered toward the offering table.Suddenly, her knees gave out, and she nearly collapsed. The fanboy supervisor and his fo
