Chapter 1

"Why isn't my medicinal bath ready yet?"

At 3:00 am, my wife, Quinn White, pushed open the door and walked in. She massaged her temples and scowled.

Usually, no matter how late she arrived home, I'd spend several hours preparing her medicinal bath in advance to help her unwind and sleep. I tuned her out, stretched, locked my phone, and got ready to head back to my room and call it a night.

Her brows drew together. Her frayed nerves fueled her irritation. "Can't you do anything right, Julian? Why should I keep you around if I have to take care of everything myself?"

Right after saying that, she pulled out a stack of cash from her bag and tossed it onto the couch before looking up at me. "Go draw my bath. I have a meeting early tomorrow morning."

I took in her condescending demeanor and smiled. "Since you can't sleep, you can sign the divorce agreement on the table." Ignoring the look on her face, I turned around, went back to my room, and shut the door behind me.

"Stop messing with me, Julian. Go prepare my medicinal bath, and I'll take it like a good girl."

The medicinal bath had a strong, unpleasant smell, so I would patiently talk Quinn into soaking in it every time. Over time, she came to believe that she was enduring it not for herself, but to make me happy.

Having said her piece, she walked into the bedroom, set her phone beside her pillow, and slipped into a silk robe. I took one look at her, and as if on cue, her phone lit up with a message from her ex-boyfriend, Oliver Green. "I had a great time tonight, babe. I hope you have sweet dreams!"

Oliver was Quinn's childhood sweetheart. He had attended our wedding, though he had shown up as nothing more than her old friend. Several years later, after completing his studies abroad, he joined Quinn's company as a manager.

It seemed that their old flame had reignited in the last two years. The two of them grew closer and closer, practically inseparable around the office until everyone saw them as the company's golden couple.

I didn't hate Oliver, though. After all, there was no smoke without fire. Had Quinn remained faithful to her marriage, no one would've had the chance to come between us.

After removing her makeup, she walked over and picked up her phone. A blissful smile spread across her face as she read the message. However, her head began to throb again, and the warning signs from her body told her that she needed to rest.

Noticing that I hadn't budged, a disdainful look crossed her face. She probably thought I was being petty, refusing to prepare her medicinal bath.

I had never failed to prepare her medicinal baths throughout our seven years of marriage. I had even developed asthma because of it. However, when the honeymoon phase was over, the tenderness and love that had once filled her eyes were long gone.

I pretended to be asleep, yet I took in every subtle change in her expression. My heart gradually hardened into stone.

"Oliver and I are going on a business trip tomorrow to meet with an important client."

"Oh. Remember to use protection. I recall you don't like children."

After hearing that, she shot daggers at me. "How could you say something like that to me, Julian? Is that how little you respect your wife?"

"Don't worry. You'll be my ex-wife soon enough," I responded calmly after turning over.

Quinn looked as though she'd been pricked by a needle. Clutching her head, she yelled at me, "That's enough, Julian! Do you really think you can survive after divorcing me? Without me paying your bills and supporting you, you're nothing!"

I broke into a violent coughing fit. It took me a while to catch my breath. "Don't worry. I'm not after your money or your assets. I'll walk away with nothing."

Quinn never paid me a visit while I was receiving treatment for my asthma. Then again, I hadn't told her about it either.

Oliver updated his social media—Quinn was accompanying him to get his dog vaccinated. My asthma attack was obviously more serious than a dog's vaccination, but Oliver mattered more to her than I did.

By the time I was rushed to the emergency room, I was barely able to breathe and was on the verge of passing out. The doctor warned me that I had to stay away from my allergens and get plenty of fresh air to ease my symptoms. Otherwise, I could die.

To blend those medicinal baths for Quinn over the years, I was constantly surrounded by medicinal herbs, which had gradually brought on my asthma. Perhaps it was for the best. Once I left that house, my asthma would naturally be easier to manage.

To my surprise, when I returned home, Quinn was still there. I couldn't believe she had actually waited outside my door the entire night.I almost stepped on her because she was just lying there on the floor. That was when I realized her face was as pale as a sheet of paper. Her breathing was faint, and her body was cold. If I hadn't felt her pulse, I'd have sworn that she was dead. I immediately called an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. Even though we were divorced, I would've done the same thing for a sick stray cat or dog on the street. "Have you lost your marbles, or do you just have a death wish?" Quinn, who had just come to, ripped off her oxygen mask and staggered out of the hospital to see me. Noticing how furious I was, she was clearly at a loss. I could see the needle mark on her arm, still oozing blood. "I just wanted to see you..." Quinn used to be like this, too. Back in the day, when she was working odd jobs to make money, she would message me whene

I slammed the door shut, but knowing Quinn's stubborn streak, she wasn't about to give up that easily. As expected, in the days that followed, every time I stepped outside, I would see her waiting downstairs for me. Even when I treated her like she wasn't there and refused to say a single word to her, she still wouldn't leave. As far as I was concerned, from the moment she had played poker with Oliver at that hotel, she had already become a stranger to me. Ironically, when I wanted to see her in the past, she would brush me off, claiming that she was too busy with work. Now that I didn't want to see her, she wanted to be attached to my hip. …I heard from some friends in the industry that Quinn's company had descended into chaos, mainly because Quinn, the CEO, had stopped giving a damn about business and was spending her days stalking me. Oliver was absolutely furious. The prize he thought he had in the bag had slipped right through his fingers. Every single day, he'd beg her

Unfortunately, I wasn't ready to accept Korra's feelings. Perhaps because of what happened with Quinn, I found myself being especially cautious about getting into a new relationship. Once we were in the car, I took the herbal medicine from Korra and joked, "You know, drinking too much traditional medicine can actually do more harm than good." Korra pressed her lips together. She was a bright young lady. It didn't take long for her to realize that I'd turned her down.Instead of responding, she simply briefed me on a few work-related matters. Then, she casually mentioned that we had a contract to negotiate with the film studio, scheduled for the evening after tomorrow.I looked at Korra, my smile faint. I wasn't sure if this was really about business, but I was certain she wanted to ask me out to a movie. Unfortunately, I had no interest in romance at the moment. After all, I had just managed to break free from the shackles of marriage. I figured that I might as well enjoy this

Oliver used to bend over backward for Quinn, showering her with sweet nothings and treating her with nothing but tenderness and consideration. Now that he was in trouble, not only did she refuse to help him, but she even snapped at him.He said, "Ms. White… I only did this for you and your company. He has no idea how much these contracts actually mean for the business!" "That's a matter between us. You're an outsider, so you should butt out!" That word "outsider" struck a nerve. Oliver flew into a rage. "I see how it is. I'm an outsider now, is that it? If I'm going down, I'll take you down with me!" The two of them got into a heated argument. I had time to kill, so I sat back and enjoyed the show.Just then, I received a text message from my newly hired assistant, Korra Smith. "I found a special remedy for asthma, Mr. Heathcliff. People claim that it works wonders. I left it on your desk. Be sure to drink it!"A warm feeling filled my heart. As it turned out, there really was

My sudden assertiveness caught Quinn completely off guard. As she massaged her temples, memories came flooding back to her. She suddenly remembered something, and the color drained from her face. "Did you really go into shock a few days ago?" I couldn't even be bothered to answer her. I had already told her everything that needed to be said. Whether she believed me or not, I didn't want to waste another second on Quinn. "Get out of my way," I spat out before walking right past her without an ounce of warmth in my gaze. Quinn finally panicked. She positioned herself in front of me, grasped my arm, and pleaded, "It isn't what it looks like, Julian. I seriously had no idea. I've just been so busy lately…"Please don't be mad at me. Come home with me. Let's sit down, talk this through, and clear up the misunderstanding. Can't we just go back to how things were?"Quinn probably realized that she was in the wrong this time. For once, she actually tried to placate me. Had this bee

"You must be joking, right?" Quinn's voice was filled with disbelief. It felt like years had passed since the last time I went into shock. Quinn hung up on the doctor and eyed me skeptically. "You really are something, Julian; you even managed to get the doctors at the hospital to collude with you. Is this your latest stunt to get my attention?"Her reaction was so absurd that it was almost comical. When she learned that I had gone into shock, her immediate reaction was to think that it was a joke. She even thought it was all made up, going so far as to claim that I'd colluded with the doctor. I honestly wondered if she was even using her brain. "Regardless of whether you're ill or not, I want you to step up and take care of Oliver's situation. I'll forgive all your mistakes." I took a deep breath, shook my head, and refused. "I'm afraid I can't do that. As you know, all I've done in the last few years is cook and brew traditional medicine."Quinn's eyes flickered when she he
