Chapter 3

Author: Monthly Explosion
The next day, while I was at the office handling my handover, a coworker named Kara Perry came over to me.

"Jace, did you really break up with Ms. Holloway?"

I nodded.

Kara looked furious as she said, "Good riddance! Nolan Prescott is no good. Just now, Ms. Holloway gagged a couple of times, and he completely panicked. He scooped her up and ran straight to the hospital."

My fingers froze over the keyboard. "She was gagging?"

Kara gave me a pitying look. "Yeah. Everyone's saying she's probably pregnant."

She glanced around and lowered her voice. "Jace, I know he's supposed to be your best friend, but he's never treated you like one. He and Sienna have had something going on for a long time.

"Nolan didn't even meet the hiring criteria here. Sienna took a pay cut just to get him brought on. But when you came in, she didn't speak up for you at all."

I swallowed the bitter feeling in my chest and forced a smile. "So it wasn't a campus recruitment offer."

Kara shook her head firmly. "Of course not. HR told me personally. You're a designer who's won a gold medal, and they stuck you at the front desk. It's insulting.

"Just go. Get as far away from those two as you can."

Her eyes turned red-rimmed as she helped me pack up my things.

Back then, I hadn't wanted to move to Crestfield, but Sienna and Nolan kept pushing me. They said we'd all gotten offers and could look out for each other.

Well, they kept that promise, in a way. They'd been looking out for each other all the way into bed.

I'd spent eight years at this tech company, yet everything I owned barely filled a single box. It was the same story at home—eight years, and my belongings couldn't even fill a carry-on suitcase.

Sienna was right. I was slow and stupid. Anyone with half a brain would have figured it out, but I had to wait until a hotel booking confirmation landed in my lap before I finally let go.

Back in college, Nolan was the one who threw himself in front of me when some thug tried to rough me up. He was the one who slung his arm around my shoulders when I was too scared to enter a design competition and said, "My boy's the best there is!"

He was the one who thumped his chest before my final interview and swore, "You've got me and Sienna looking out for you. Nobody's going to mess with you."

The look in his eyes when he said those things was so sincere. That was why, no matter what came after, I never could have imagined that the person who'd hurt me the deepest would be him.

Hatred was one thing, but a decade of friendship couldn't simply be dismissed either.

I stumbled into the hallway of the hospital, clutching my cardboard box.

Sure enough, there they were in the ward. They had their backs to me and were wrapped in each other's arms.

Nolan's eyes were red-rimmed, and his voice was shaking as he pleaded with her, "Sienna, get rid of it. Jace already had the whole wedding planned out. We can't keep doing this to hi—"

Sienna cut him off before he could finish. "No. I've only been going through the motions with him. You're the one I actually love.

"I wanted to come clean the first time his parents visited, but you kept stopping me. This baby is perfect timing. We can finally—"

The door banged open. I stood in the doorway, white as a sheet. "You really thought you could hide this from me forever? You were that sure I was too stupid to figure it out?"

Sienna whipped around, looking like a deer caught in headlights. Her mouth hung open, but no sound came out.

Nolan pushed her away from him. "Quick, explain! Tell Jace what happened!"

But Sienna only froze for a second before smiling. "Maybe it's better that you know. I'm tired of hiding it."

"Sienna!" Nolan grabbed at her sleeve.

Frantically, his eyes darted to me, and he said, "Don't say that!

"Jace, listen to me, it was an accident, I swear. She'll get rid of the baby. I'll leave and never come near you two again. Please don't hate me."

His voice cracked on the last word, and Sienna went pale with worry. She pulled him close, half-supporting him as she murmured gently, "Nolan, don't. It's not your fault that I don't love him. Seeing you cry like this breaks my heart."

One was crying, and the other was soothing them. I never knew my ex-girlfriend could be this tender with someone.

Ten years together, eight of which were spent under the same roof, and she'd never once shown me that kind of softness or compromise. Every bit of it went to my best friend instead.

At some point in the murmur of their voices, my eyes started to sting. I wiped them dry before anything could fall and took a few steps back.

"Nolan, Sienna and I already broke up. Whatever you two do from here has nothing to do with me."

I hung up, called a designated driver for Sienna, and turned off my phone. Audrey sidled up next to me with a knowing look. "You're not going to pick her up yourself?"I shot her a look. "Getting her a driver is already more than she deserves. Pick her up? Not a chance."The best thing an ex can do is disappear from the other person's life. This whole thing is just pathetic."The next morning, a call came in from an unknown number. As soon as I picked up, I heard Sienna's voice."Jace, why didn't you come get me last night?" she demanded self-righteously, her tone laced with accusation. I almost laughed from sheer anger. "Sienna, I'm not your friend, and I'm definitely not your boyfriend. What makes you think I'm obligated to come pick you up?"I'm married and about to become a father. Tell me, why on Earth would I come get you?"Also, do me a favor. Stop calling me when you're drunk, now and in the future. My wife doesn't appreciate it."Sienna remained silent. All I could

The color drained from Sienna's face. "Jace, I… I'm sorry about what happened before. I was wrong."I didn't want to hear it. I shook her hand off and kept my voice level as I spoke."It's done. If anything, I should be thanking you. If you hadn't bailed all ten times, I never would've ended up with Audrey on such short notice. "Funny how life works. You spend years chasing something that never pans out, and then the one you don't even pay attention to turns out to be everything."Earlier that year, I'd run into Audrey, who had changed so much that I almost didn't recognize her. The first thing she did was apologize for giving me such a hard time in school. Then she told me how she felt, and that she meant every word of it."Jace, I'm probably not the sharpest person in the world. Back in school, I couldn't figure out why, of all the guys, I just kept picking on you."But eventually I realized it wasn't because I liked messing with you. It was because I liked you, and I was too

The whole ride home, Audrey chattered away, telling my parents about everything we'd seen abroad. Somewhere in the middle of listening to her recount, my eyes started to sting.Sienna wouldn't even meet my parents once, but Audrey—the girl I'd clashed with the most back in school—didn't put on any airs despite being a wealthy heiress. She sat between them, teaching my dad how to use an AI chatbot and showing my mom how to watch shows on her phone. When a person actually loved another, they'd put in the effort with the people who mattered to them. But if they didn't love the other, then no amount of compromise or sacrifice would ever change that.Audrey, noticing my tears, wiped the corners of my eyes. She then held my hand and murmured, "Hey, what's going on? Why do you look so upset even though you're seeing your parents again?"I'll cook you something nice tonight. How's that sound?"My parents didn't bat an eye. They'd already seen this side of Audrey—how she doted on me withou

Nolan was propped up in bed, scrolling through his phone with a smug look on his face, when the door flew open with a kick. He looked up and saw Sienna standing there, furious. He blinked. "Sienna, what's wrong? I called you so many times, but you didn't pick up. You just had the procedure—"Sienna didn't respond. She just walked straight up to him and stared at him like she was looking at a stranger. Her gaze was sharp and searching in a way Nolan had never seen from her before.Panic rose in his chest. "Sienna, why are you looking at me like that?"She kept her eyes locked on him as she slowly pulled a phone from her pocket. She unlocked it, then held it up in front of his face."It was all you. You planned every last bit of it."First, you made sure Jace found out I went to Ridgeline Pass with you. Then you used my phone to send him the hotel booking. The prenatal lab results in the chat and the things you said in this room when he walked in were all deliberate."I never im

Three days passed, and Sienna still hadn't received a single message from me.She pushed open the door to Nolan's hospital room. "Has Jace come to see you at all?"Nolan, clutching the bedsheets, shook his head. He frowned while he spoke. "He probably hates me this time. No matter how bad things got before, he never just shut me out like this. It's my fault."Sienna didn't respond to that. She just looked up and said, "Don't overthink it. I already put in for time off at work. Focus on getting better, and we'll deal with the rest once you're recovered."After she left the hospital, Sienna pulled out her phone and called me. It rang and rang until it disconnected on its own. She tried several more times, but every call ended the same way.An uneasy feeling started to creep over her. She called the HR department immediately and asked, "Has Jace Crawford been coming in to work?""Jace? He resigned days ago.""Resigned? I never saw his paperwork come through.""Oh, you actually a

After I said that last line, I shut the door, picked up my box, and left.Sienna didn't come home that night, but Nolan's texts wouldn't stop coming."Jace, don't blame me. You and Sienna were never right for each other."We're like brothers. It's better that she ends up with me than with someone else. I grew up without a mom. I can't let my kid grow up without one too."I blocked his number and deleted every message without batting an eye. Then I opened the fridge, pulled out the last drawer of beer, and threw it all away to make room for Nolan's soda water. Each bottle hit the trash with a heavy thud, like something hammering against the bottom of my chest. When we first moved in together, Sienna was still an intern. She would spend her entire paycheck on beer for me and line the bottles up on the top shelf of the fridge just so I wouldn't have to bend down to reach them. She told me that, aside from drawing, I was hopeless at taking care of myself, and said she'd have to do
