Chapter Fifty-Nine — The Step He Did Not See

Ames came back to the outer table at ten past two with a narrow certified extract and the two folders from the day file. The source post book had not left the chain it entered when it came off the stair-head on the night of the seventh. He set the folders a hand apart. BRAM. TESS. Both had been sealed earlier that day and neither had been sent. The record envelope and the BRAM folder would be opened. The TESS folder would not.

I ruled a clean sheet into four before anything was unsealed.

  • After the Alpha Rejected Me, I Came Back with His Twins   Chapter Sixty-Five — The Desk That Expected Him

They came back separately, which was the whole point of asking separately. The samples arrived first, at one, in a card folder with its own number inked on the flap and its own handover page tied to it. Ames read the number aloud, checked it against the receipt spiked on his nail that morning, and set the folder at the left end of the table. The duty line came up a quarter of an hour later, carried by a different wolf on a different errand. Inside its sleeve was a certified extract of that one entry, checked against its source and authenticated under its ordinary chain, with a separate number and handover page. That went to the right end of the table, four feet of bare board between it and the folder, and Ames put a weight on the sleeve without opening it.Neither carrier was told what the other had brought. Neither asked. Both signed, took their halves, and went back down."Both hands and hours against both," Ames said. "Nothing has been opened, and they have not been set together in

  • After the Alpha Rejected Me, I Came Back with His Twins   Chapter Sixty-Four — The Name Beneath the Line

The bundle came up at eight on a board, the cord still through it and yesterday's preservation tag knotted at one corner. Ames set it on the ordinary working table well clear of everything else, and untied nothing."Tell me what came," Mara said."Ordinary task returns. One working desk, the twenty-first of December." He turned the current handover page toward her. "Located at four yesterday, tied and tagged at twenty past, held overnight in the keeper's press, signed out to me at ten to eight. Two hands, hours against both."The wolf who had carried it up waited with his own half of that page, signed, took it, and went back down without asking one question, which was all I wanted from him."Has any wolf opened it.""Not by this page and not by me. Nobody has told me a word of what is inside, and I have not asked for one."Mara put two fingers on the tag and left them there."Yesterday's paper asked where a thing was and whether it was at all. That paper is spent. It opens nothing.""

  • After the Alpha Rejected Me, I Came Back with His Twins    Chapter Sixty-Three — The Hand He Let Go

At half past one Theo came up from the lower yard and asked which end of the table he was wanted at."This one. It is the twenty-first of December," I said. "Your own hours of it and nothing else. You will not be told why I am asking, and you will not be told what any other wolf has said."Ames entered the hour, the porch, the four of us and the exact width of the questions, and read that width aloud before I put one. The four columns lay face down under a stone at the far end of the boards with the certified extract folded inside them, and stayed there all afternoon."From the moment you turned toward the water," I said. "Forward from that. What you did, and what your own eyes held."He sat back. "Somebody has put me on that meadow.""Somebody has. You will not get a name off me for it.""I don't want one. I was there. Ask.""How near did you come to the break.""To the edge of it. The landward lip." He said it the way he says a depth off a bar. "The ring lamps were dead before I got

  • After the Alpha Rejected Me, I Came Back with His Twins   Chapter Sixty-Two — Forty Came Down

By twenty past ten the status page was sealed and copied, and Damien was at the gate. On clean paper I ruled four columns.WHO CAME DOWN. WHO TURNED TO THE WATER. WHO WENT BACK UP. WHO SAW.The fourth stayed empty.Ames laid a certified extract beside it: the ordinary alarm and response page for the twenty-first, narrow, the original never out of its chain. In this source there is no roster of arrivals or returns by name, no count by side.Cole took narrow questions in the lower yard, as a wolf who ran down that hill. Not as anything else, and he was told so twice. We worked on the covered lower porch; Mara had taken the archive stairs once and would not take them twice in one morning. A cart came in and was emptied. Two wolves had the lantern rack down off its hooks and were working along it with a rag and a tin of oil. I wanted to count the lamps, and did not. A rack in January tells you about oil and glass and nothing whatever about a hill in the dark four weeks ago.Ames read the

  • After the Alpha Rejected Me, I Came Back with His Twins   Chapter Sixty-One — The Man No One Signed In

The two post pages were resealed and removed from the outer table at first light. Bram and Tess were no longer part of the morning's work. On the eighteenth, at a quarter past seven, I ruled four empty headings.LAST SEEN. TAKEN OFF. RECEIVED BY. STATUS.I left the fourth blank — not dead, alive, held, or escaped.Ames brought only the narrow ordinary receipt and guard indexes from after the twenty-first. Every restricted file stayed locked elsewhere, outside Damien's sight. He waited at the field gate because his recorded personal sight followed Sedge as far as the water, not because he belonged to this investigation. What lay on the wood was blank paper, those narrow indexes, and a line I had copied out in my own hand.THE BOOK WENT OUT OF SEDGE'S HANDS AND INTO THE WATER, AND HE WENT AFTER IT.Under it: DAMIEN KANE. PERSONAL SIGHT, TWENTY-FIRST OF DECEMBER.A clause came after that in his own telling, about what the thing told you concerning the man. I left it off. It is a judgment

INFERENCE?Ames read the scope off his own index, the way he does. The seventh of January. The stair-head post book, that watch and no other. Page headings where the entries cannot be read without them. Whether the Elder's mark at ten past four stands on it as it was described. Whether the specified watch page runs continuous. Whether any mark of relief, transfer, or post handed appears within that window. And, separately, whether the custody index lists an independe
