Chapter 2

Penulis: GouFugui
At nine that morning, I left the lounge in Kevin's $4,000 custom suit and walked into his private office.

He used to come home every day and slam his briefcase onto the couch. Then he would point a finger in my face and unload.

"Do you have any idea how exhausting my job is? Do you know how much pressure I'm under every single day?

"You sit at home living the good life. How can you not even manage one decent meal?"

I used to believe his workplace really was a battlefield.

But when I pushed open the door to that spacious, sunlit private office, I couldn't help letting out a cold laugh.

The room advertised comfort at every turn: a leather executive chair, climate control, and a high-end coffee station.

Beside the coffee station stood a whole row of out-of-print collectibles for killing time. Outside the door, every employee who saw me greeted me with a deferential, "Good morning, Kevin."

This was unbearable pressure? This was work so grueling he couldn't survive it?

At ten sharp, the secretary knocked before coming in, her expression tense. "Kevin, Ethan from the Crest Group is here. But... he's in a terrible mood. He tore into the receptionist in the lobby just now."

Ethan Blake was the Crest Group client behind the $300,000 deal Kevin had mentioned in his messages, the one he had chased for six months without closing.

Ethan was supposedly arrogant beyond belief, the kind of man who flipped tables and cursed people out at the slightest provocation. Kevin had spent his days trailing him like a lapdog without ever getting near a signed contract.

I straightened my tie and stood. "Come on. Conference room."

When I pushed open the conference room door, a middle-aged man with a large beer belly was slamming a stack of documents onto the table. "This is your company's proposal? What the hell is this? Where's Kevin? Tell him to get in here!"

The secretary shrank back, frightened. I walked over calmly, sat across from him, and poured him a cup of coffee.

"Ethan, take a breath."

His head snapped up, and he began cursing me out with a finger in my face. He ranted for a full ten minutes, tearing into everything from formatting errors in the proposal to our company's service.

The old Kevin would have been cursing the client out in his head while mopping his brow and apologizing through gritted teeth. I didn't.

I only listened quietly, and at the right moment I even handed him a tissue.

Was that the best he could do? Please. In five years, I had endured my three-year-old son's senseless kicking and screaming on the floor. I had endured Sofia humiliating and berating me for two solid hours over a single hair on the floor.

A full-time housewife may not have much, but that house had trained me to read a room, provide emotional support, and endure almost anything.

Once he had finally worn himself out and reached for his coffee, I smiled and finally spoke.

I didn't defend the proposal or bring up the contract. I simply repeated his complaints back to him with precision, then offered three practical solutions in a tone that was gentle but immovable.

"Ethan, that third point you raised, we genuinely didn't think it through.

"If we move the delivery date up by ten days and I personally seek approval for a dedicated support line just for Crest, would that show enough good faith?"

Ethan's hand paused with the coffee cup halfway to his mouth.

He looked me up and down, suspicious, probably because I was nothing like the slippery flatterer he knew Kevin to be. I answered every question, committed to every follow-up, and never once lost my composure.

Half an hour later, Ethan had not only signed the $300,000 contract but also given me a firm handshake on his way out.

"Kevin, I always thought you were all flash and no substance. Today's conversation changed my mind.

"From now on, I'm bringing every Crest account to you!"

I smiled and walked him to the elevator.

Back in the office, I looked at the signed contract on the desk and felt tears sting my eyes. Kevin always said I had never gone to college, that I was stupid, and that I was fit for nothing but washing dishes at home.

What he didn't know was that I had graduated with straight A's. My family had no money, and my brother was about to start college, so I gave up my own chance at college and went to work full-time instead. Yet one sneer about me not having the brains had nailed me permanently into the kitchen.

I ran my fingers over the expensive watch on my wrist. Kevin, the career you were so proud of was never beyond me.

The day the divorce was finalized, heavy snow came down over the city.Sofia drove Kevin out of the house with a broom. In that thin, ragged winter coat, holding nothing but a state ID, he walked along an unfamiliar state highway like a ghost, his skin purple with cold.A black Mercedes slowed to a stop beside him. The window came down, and I looked at him coldly from the back seat."Kevin."I said his name softly enough that only the two of us could hear. He jolted and turned around."Didn't you always say being a full-time housewife is the easiest job in the world, that all you have to do is lie around at home?" I looked at his weathered face, which now looked ten years older, and smiled."Well, you're free now. Go enjoy that fair society of yours where hard work is all it takes."The window rose slowly. It shut out the cutting wind and snow, and shut out his desperate howling too.In the rearview mirror, I watched him stagger two steps after the car through the snow, then fall hard

Six months later. After countless failed escapes, beatings, hunger, and psychological torment, Kevin finally lost his mind.He stopped fantasizing about switching back. All he wanted was to get out of that hellish farm and away from the mother who found new ways to torture him every day.He slipped over to a neighbor's house and called me through sobs."Divorce... please, let's get a divorce... I don't want anything. I just want out of here. I'm begging you to let me live!"I sat in my office, turning a pen in my fingers, and laughed softly. "Sure."The next day, I drove out to the farm in the Mercedes S-Class he had once treasured, accompanied by the best divorce lawyer in the city. When I stepped into that filthy farmyard in a designer coat and spotless shoes, Kevin was kneeling beside the stable, washing foul-smelling clothes in a basin with hands left raw and swollen by the cold. When he saw me, hope flared in his eyes, and he scrambled toward me, only for the bodyguard behind me t

Kevin was hauled back to the farm. The former sales manager was now beaten out of bed with a broom before dawn every day, then forced to wash filthy clothes, shovel manure, and work sixteen-hour days. The hands that used to do nothing but type and sign contracts were now covered with chilblains and blood-filled blisters. He tried to run. But he had no state ID and no cash. He had barely made it a quarter mile down the road when Sofia rounded up nearby relatives, dragged him back, and beat him until he could not get out of bed for three days. His one hope was the tenth of the next month. That was the day his salary used to land.He knew I had always used an authorized-user card tied to his account. When they took him away, he had hidden the old phone in the crotch of his pants so well that no one found it. He planned to buy a bus ticket in secret the moment his salary landed and escape back to the city. Before dawn on the tenth, he hid in the mildewed storeroom, turned on the phone with

Over the following week, I took that office by storm.Five years of family gatherings and trench warfare with Sofia had given me exceptional emotional intelligence.I used it to win back every client Kevin had ever offended. Then I closed two bids that even the vice president had written off.On Friday afternoon, the company held an all-hands awards meeting. The CEO stood onstage, beaming as he clapped me on the shoulder and addressed more than a hundred employees. "Kevin's recent performance speaks for itself. The board has decided to make an exception and promote him to Director of Sales, with his salary doubled!"The applause was thunderous. Alice sat in a corner, watching me with awe and eagerness to please. The subordinates who used to trip Kevin up were now lining up to toast me.In a sharply cut suit, champagne in hand, I stood at the pinnacle of the career Kevin had claimed as his own and accepted everyone's admiration with a smile.Just then, an ear-splitting shriek and a stre

At two that afternoon, I had just come out of a department meeting at the office.A young colleague in a tight pencil skirt, drenched in perfume, appeared at my office door. She swayed into my office with a cup of boba in hand. Her name was Alice Reed. She was famous in the department for being two-faced, and she was Kevin's favorite office confidante."Kevin." She drew the name out in a sugary voice and pushed a report across to me, deliberately bending low enough to show off a generous amount of cleavage. "This data is so complicated. I can't figure it out. Could you do it for me?"Kevin used to eat this up. He would gladly do her work for her, then come home and sneer at me."Look at Alice. She's beautiful and knows how to talk to people. Not like you, walking around like some worn-out old housewife. It turns my stomach."I leaned back in the chair and watched her quietly. I didn't take the report, and I didn't touch the boba."Alice." I borrowed the hard, clipped tone Kevin used wh

While I was closing a major deal and basking in the entire department's admiration, Kevin was getting his first taste of life as a full-time housewife. At noon, he lay on the couch, happily waiting for his expensive delivery. The lock suddenly turned with a click. His mother, whom he called the most reasonable woman alive and I knew as a monster of a mother-in-law, let herself in with the spare key without knocking, exactly as always."Olivia! It's noon and you haven't started lunch? Are you trying to starve my grandson?" Sofia had not even reached the living room before her shouting filled it.Kevin, in my body, jumped and sat up. "Mom, what are you doing here? I didn't feel like cooking today. I ordered in."His tone was casual, with a hint of wheedling. In the past, one sentence like that would have made Sofia beam."My son works so hard. Let me cook you a steak."But he had forgotten. He was Olivia now.Sofia saw the takeout on the coffee table, and her face darkened instantly. She
