Chapter 1

When the screen went dark, I ran barefoot to the sink and yanked up my shirt.

The man in the mirror was tall and a little soft from never exercising, with a layer of fat around his middle.

Most of all, my new body was whole. Healthy.

There was no jagged C-section scar across my abdomen. I could breathe easily, with none of that heavy, dragging pressure in my chest. When I put weight on my wrist, no needle-sharp pain shot through the joint.

I stared into the mirror as my tears fell faster.

This was incredible. Truly incredible.

So this was what it felt like to walk without a weakened pelvic floor causing urine leaks. After a full night's sleep, my mind could actually be this clear. So this was what it felt like to inhabit a body that childbirth and relentless housework had not ground down to the bone.

A soft knock sounded at the door to the office lounge. The body's memory told me it was Danielle from reception. She came in carrying a steaming cup of black coffee.

"Kevin, you're up? Here's your coffee. It's just the right temperature." She saw my reddened eyes and immediately set the cup down, alarmed. "Do you have a headache from drinking too much at a client dinner last night? Should I get you something for the hangover?"

I froze.

After I gave birth and ran a fever for three days straight, my husband told me to take some Tylenol and rest. He had a client meeting the next day and didn't want to catch anything, so he packed a blanket and spent three nights in a hotel.

Yet now, all I had done was let my eyes redden, and one of his well-paid subordinates was immediately fussing over me. I curled my hands around the hot coffee.

"I'm fine, Danielle."

My phone buzzed again.

Kevin, wearing my body, had sent a selfie. In the photo, he was sprawled on the couch wearing my face, a spread of expensive takeout covering the coffee table, looking enormously pleased with himself.

[See this? No getting up early, no packed subway. Just order in. This is what living looks like.] [Olivia, are you shaking in an office bathroom right now?] [Don't say I didn't warn you. We have a meeting at ten with a major prospect I've spent six months courting. You'd better call in sick. Don't ruin a $300,000 deal!]

Looking at that familiar face in the photo, all I felt was relief.

He thought he had stolen a paradise where he could lie around. He had no idea that every inch of the body he thought had such an easy life was steeped in despair.

I didn't answer him. I picked up the black coffee I had never dared touch while I was nursing and took a long, hard swallow.

Five years. This was the first time I had claimed a hot drink for myself without apology.

The day the divorce was finalized, heavy snow came down over the city.Sofia drove Kevin out of the house with a broom. In that thin, ragged winter coat, holding nothing but a state ID, he walked along an unfamiliar state highway like a ghost, his skin purple with cold.A black Mercedes slowed to a stop beside him. The window came down, and I looked at him coldly from the back seat."Kevin."I said his name softly enough that only the two of us could hear. He jolted and turned around."Didn't you always say being a full-time housewife is the easiest job in the world, that all you have to do is lie around at home?" I looked at his weathered face, which now looked ten years older, and smiled."Well, you're free now. Go enjoy that fair society of yours where hard work is all it takes."The window rose slowly. It shut out the cutting wind and snow, and shut out his desperate howling too.In the rearview mirror, I watched him stagger two steps after the car through the snow, then fall hard

Six months later. After countless failed escapes, beatings, hunger, and psychological torment, Kevin finally lost his mind.He stopped fantasizing about switching back. All he wanted was to get out of that hellish farm and away from the mother who found new ways to torture him every day.He slipped over to a neighbor's house and called me through sobs."Divorce... please, let's get a divorce... I don't want anything. I just want out of here. I'm begging you to let me live!"I sat in my office, turning a pen in my fingers, and laughed softly. "Sure."The next day, I drove out to the farm in the Mercedes S-Class he had once treasured, accompanied by the best divorce lawyer in the city. When I stepped into that filthy farmyard in a designer coat and spotless shoes, Kevin was kneeling beside the stable, washing foul-smelling clothes in a basin with hands left raw and swollen by the cold. When he saw me, hope flared in his eyes, and he scrambled toward me, only for the bodyguard behind me t

Kevin was hauled back to the farm. The former sales manager was now beaten out of bed with a broom before dawn every day, then forced to wash filthy clothes, shovel manure, and work sixteen-hour days. The hands that used to do nothing but type and sign contracts were now covered with chilblains and blood-filled blisters. He tried to run. But he had no state ID and no cash. He had barely made it a quarter mile down the road when Sofia rounded up nearby relatives, dragged him back, and beat him until he could not get out of bed for three days. His one hope was the tenth of the next month. That was the day his salary used to land.He knew I had always used an authorized-user card tied to his account. When they took him away, he had hidden the old phone in the crotch of his pants so well that no one found it. He planned to buy a bus ticket in secret the moment his salary landed and escape back to the city. Before dawn on the tenth, he hid in the mildewed storeroom, turned on the phone with

Over the following week, I took that office by storm.Five years of family gatherings and trench warfare with Sofia had given me exceptional emotional intelligence.I used it to win back every client Kevin had ever offended. Then I closed two bids that even the vice president had written off.On Friday afternoon, the company held an all-hands awards meeting. The CEO stood onstage, beaming as he clapped me on the shoulder and addressed more than a hundred employees. "Kevin's recent performance speaks for itself. The board has decided to make an exception and promote him to Director of Sales, with his salary doubled!"The applause was thunderous. Alice sat in a corner, watching me with awe and eagerness to please. The subordinates who used to trip Kevin up were now lining up to toast me.In a sharply cut suit, champagne in hand, I stood at the pinnacle of the career Kevin had claimed as his own and accepted everyone's admiration with a smile.Just then, an ear-splitting shriek and a stre

At two that afternoon, I had just come out of a department meeting at the office.A young colleague in a tight pencil skirt, drenched in perfume, appeared at my office door. She swayed into my office with a cup of boba in hand. Her name was Alice Reed. She was famous in the department for being two-faced, and she was Kevin's favorite office confidante."Kevin." She drew the name out in a sugary voice and pushed a report across to me, deliberately bending low enough to show off a generous amount of cleavage. "This data is so complicated. I can't figure it out. Could you do it for me?"Kevin used to eat this up. He would gladly do her work for her, then come home and sneer at me."Look at Alice. She's beautiful and knows how to talk to people. Not like you, walking around like some worn-out old housewife. It turns my stomach."I leaned back in the chair and watched her quietly. I didn't take the report, and I didn't touch the boba."Alice." I borrowed the hard, clipped tone Kevin used wh

While I was closing a major deal and basking in the entire department's admiration, Kevin was getting his first taste of life as a full-time housewife. At noon, he lay on the couch, happily waiting for his expensive delivery. The lock suddenly turned with a click. His mother, whom he called the most reasonable woman alive and I knew as a monster of a mother-in-law, let herself in with the spare key without knocking, exactly as always."Olivia! It's noon and you haven't started lunch? Are you trying to starve my grandson?" Sofia had not even reached the living room before her shouting filled it.Kevin, in my body, jumped and sat up. "Mom, what are you doing here? I didn't feel like cooking today. I ordered in."His tone was casual, with a hint of wheedling. In the past, one sentence like that would have made Sofia beam."My son works so hard. Let me cook you a steak."But he had forgotten. He was Olivia now.Sofia saw the takeout on the coffee table, and her face darkened instantly. She
