I was totally confused when my best friend, Alexis, texted me and said that she saw my husband and I at a restaurant.
Because I was at home currently. On the sofa. In a robe with a mask on my face. And my husband, Victor, was supposed to be at work. At least, that was what he texted me a few hours ago.
Ding!
Alexis: I see you and Victor in the restaurant :P You two are just the sweetest couple!
Me: Um, you might wanna get your eyes checked, bestie. :P I'm at home right now!
I sat my phone down and laid back against the sofa while I let my face mask settle. But my phone kept buzzing anyway.
Ding! Ding!
Alexis: I know what Victor looks like! But if that woman turning the back on me isn't you… there might be some trouble!
Alexis: OMG!! Listen to this NOW!!
Ding!
It was an audio message. That made me sit up on the sofa immediately. I pressed play without hesitation.
"Oh, Victor, I know you still think of me.” The unknown woman's voice chimed in.
“I have always been thinking of you.” Victor's voice came through as clear as day.
"You're so kind, just as you always have been. It's like you're the only person who tries to understand me, and who really does."
"And you say I'm kind?" Victor laughed and it sounded so musical.
The woman giggled. "Because you are! Even though you used to always treat me like a child, it's because you were worried about me. I always felt so safe when I was around you back then—and even still now."
Her voice almost sounded… flirty… the way she said that, too.
“Madam,” another voice came through. It was perhaps the waiter. "If you don’t mind, may I ask how long have you two been married? You two have such good chemistry together!"
“Wow, so you think we're sweet?” The unknown woman sounded like she really enjoyed his question, “our relationship is as always.”
The audio cut out with her loud laugh, before I caught the response from Victor.
Hearing how he spoke to her... It made me feel conflicted.
Our marriage wasn't something that came out of love. We were introduced by his grandfather, and set to wed that same week.
While it was odd living under the same roof with a stranger who was meant to be my husband, it wasn't awful. We spent time getting to know each other and in time, I fell in love with my husband.
Victor had always been so thoughtful. He was a man of few words, but I could feel how much he cared through his actions.
But now...why Victor so...treasured her? Even his laugh was so carefree and happy that I had never heard before.
How long had they known each other? How come I've never heard of them before?
A sense of doubt made my skin crawl.
It took me years to build something intimate with Victor, and he'd never spoken to any other woman the way he was speaking to this one.
I had to know what was going on. Or at least get to the bottom of who this person was.
I clicked on Victor's number out of my Favorite Contact list, and he picked up after the fourth ring.
"Hey, Emelia. Is everything okay?” Victor greeted me in a rushed voice.
I took a deep breath and pretended nothing was wrong. “Hey. Yeah, I just wanted to know when you'd be home for dinner? Are you still at your office?”
“Yeah, I'm busy at a work meeting right now. Now's not a good time.” Victor stated.
Liar.
"I'm sorry." I kept my voice steady and even as I tried to find out more details. "You usually call me when you're going to be late at the office, and I thought you'd be home by now. Is everything okay? Why didn't you call?"
Instead of acknowledging anything I said, or even giving me some type of "call you later," he hung up on me.
Just like that. He hit the end button on his phone and completely ignored everything I had to say.
What the hell was that?!
Victor's POVThe rest of my afternoon was spent doing menial paperwork and answering work emails. Of course, none of it was enough to truly take my mind off of the horrible meeting from this morning, but it took the edge off the madness that crept at the edges of my mind.Well, until I received a phone call from Rory."I thought I told you not to call me unless you had something useful." I answered irritably."Already so grouchy, are we?" Rory teased. "Well, you'll be pleased to know that I was able to secure flight logs of those Italian flights I was able to track down. Your precious Emelia was on the first flight that came in."I merely grunted in response."Hm, not exactly the pleased response I was looking for.""Because I already KNOW that she's here." I sighed. "I saw her, at the masquerade ball.""Oh, well I was not made aware of that. Perhaps I would've found better use of my time if you'd communicated better.""Oh, don't tell me that's the only piece of information you were ab
Emelia's POVTriumph brought a smile to my face as I watched Lily storm off. Although, a part of me wondered what it would've been like if she saw that it was actually me, but I brushed the thought away completely.Just as she disappeared into the crowd, I let out a sigh of relief as I took off my sunglasses."Miss Emelia?" I heard a voice from behind me call out. When I turned around, I was surprised to see that it was my secretary, Renee. "Hey, Renee. Did you see any of that, or…?"She handed me a matcha latte and greeted me with a smile. "I did. I was in the back when I heard all of the commotion, but I saw you were already handling it. And well, might I add.""Thanks. It's funny that we're already dealing with those kinds of people before the store even opens." I motioned for her to follow me as we made our way to the back rooms of the store."Do you mind if I ask you something?" She asked once we were out of earshot of all the other workers."Of course.""Was there a reason why yo
Lily's POVWho the hell did these people think they were? Barring me from this store like they owned the place? Lowly little security guards, thinking that their words mattered!Did they know that they were messing with Lily Russo? Wife of the most esteemed, billionaire CEO and business tycoon, Victor Russo?I had a RIGHT to be here!I came with a mission, and I had no intentions of being turned away just because "the store wasn't open yet".Pfft! As if that mattered!I need to make amends to Victor. He clearly likes this store enough to keep their business card around. Not to mention, my girls would be so jealous of me getting early entry into such a prestigious store!"Ma'am, the store isn't open yet!" A short, chubby guard put himself in between me and the entrance, blocking the lobby. "You can come back when it opens tomorrow!""No, what I'm going to do is stand RIGHT HERE, until you fetch me the owner of this place! Clearly, my reputation is lost on someone like you." I snorted."
Emelia's POV"We're so proud of you, Emelia." My mom's smile shone through the screen of our FaceTime call. "Truly, you've done a lot for yourself over these years, and look at where you're at now!"Tears welled at the base of my eyes. "T-thank you, mom. I'm just sorry that I haven't been able to come and see you and dad… Especially since I promised—"A loud, wet cough interrupted my sentence but was soon replaced by an amused chuckle. My mom turned the front-facing camera towards my dad. His somewhat pale complexion was warmed by the sunlight spilling into the hospital room. A smile bloomed across his lips when he saw me."Don't worry about your old man," my dad's gruff voice came through the speakers. "I'm still here, and fighting off whatever the hell it is I have. Besides, you're making waves, baby girl. I couldn't be any more proud of you.""You know me, always a worry wart." I laughed in between trying to keep my tears at bay."Oh, you take that up from your mother for sure.""He
Victor's POVFrustration tried to claw its way out of my chest as I sped back to the sanctuary of my office. My fingers gripped the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles turned white.I drove the car in complete silence, letting nothing shelter my mind from the storm of my tumultuous thoughts. The meeting was a disaster. Not only were The Collective's proposed terms and conditions near nothing what I'd envisioned a collaboration would actually be, I was more angry with the fact that it wasn't even Emelia who came. That was probably the worst part of it all.I hated how high my expectations were when I should've known better. It's not like I was given a reason to hold her to such estimations.Yet, my heart still raced with the possibility… the hope.Once I made it back to my headquarters and sulked my way up the steps and past the workspace, I b-lined for my office without saying a word to anyone. Silence slowly descended upon the space as I walked by, each step weighted with disap
Emelia's POVMost of my morning was spent catching up on more emails, filling out paperwork, and finalizing the details for The Collective's grand opening tomorrow. Tomorrow…My heart swelled at the thought of seeing the fruits of my hard work culminating into the physical manifestation of my storefront.I had dreams about this. And of course, along the way, I had my doubts. But despite that, I persevered.I became stronger.I became more determined.I never gave up.And now I got to reap the rewards of all my efforts, and to truly bask in the love and passion I poured into this industry that had already given so much to me.The fashion and design industry would always be my home, and I was glad that I was able to mark my place in its world.Excitement buzzed beneath my skin as a smile blossomed across my lips."A penny for your thoughts?" Alexis smiled as her eyes glanced up from her laptop at me. "Although, I can probably already guess what's got you so giddy!""I just can't believe
