Chapter 4

Author: Madam Fenghuo
After that day, Ethan disappeared from the house entirely. The whole city of Lorencio, and no one could find him.

His secretary told me he'd mobilized helicopters to Bordertown, took family soldiers with him, and went to war out there.

I didn't care.

I saw him again two weeks later. He was at the casino with Julie. They'd had a big night. I walked past without looking at them.

After dinner he came home. I sat on the couch listening to music.

He tested the water. "You saw me at the casino today.

It was sudden. Silas had prepared everything and invited the heads of every Lorencio family to his compound. But my marriage to Ethan still wasn't legally dissolved. We'd registered nine years ago. No proposal. No ceremony. He'd slid the pull-tab from a beer can onto my ring finger and called it done, and he'd sworn, at the time, that he'd give me the best of everything. That he'd become Don.I believed him completely. I walked through fire with him, every step of the way. I never doubted him.Our parents had been in the same world long before us. Before we were old enough to understand what any of it meant, our fathers had already decided we belonged together. Fate did the rest. When I heard that he still wouldn't sign, that even after everything, after being beaten, he just sat in that house and wouldn't eat or leave, just called my name over and over, I knew somewhere under all of it that he was sorry. That there was still something left that had been real. But we couldn't go back.

"Let's go."I just wanted to be away from this place. Everything about it made my skin crawl.Julie's eyes were locked on us. "Silas. That woman is insane. She killed our child. She put our child in the water."Silas and I glanced at each other. Julie had completely lost it.I felt no sympathy watching her rage.Silas took the initiative to explain to me: "Not my child. Nothing happened between us."That broke something in Julie. She screamed: "She doesn't even love you! She's using you to hurt me!"Silas smiled at the corner of his mouth. "She'll get there.""Let's go." I was satisfied with that answer. Before we could reach the boat, Ethan came around the point in another vessel, soldiers on deck with rifles up, blocking our path. He stood at the front, eyes red."Anya. You can't go."He looked nothing like himself. Even with a crew at his back, he was coming apart.Silas made a sound of mild annoyance and reached for his gun. I put a hand on his arm and shook my head. I just wanted

I went back to the house for the rest of my things. The place was covered in gifts: a full jewelry set on the dining table, a crystal stiletto on every couch cushion."I know you love crystal. I drove all over Lorencio." Ethan was smiling, easy and welcoming, like this was just another evening. "Some custom pieces are still being made. Try these on first, they're going to look incredible on you."I used to collect high heels. Stopped when our place got too small."I found a new property. A whole wing just for things you love."For a second, standing there, I could almost feel where we used to be. He'd thought of everything, the way he used to.I felt nothing.I went upstairs to get my bags. The housekeeper had already packed them. I picked them up and left.Ethan blocked the stairs. Something vulnerable crossed his face. "I ended things with Julie. So why are you still doing this? Are you going to that man's place? What do you think I am?"I looked past him. "What I do has nothing to d

I slept a full day at the hotel. It was Silas's turf, and his men had already thrown Ethan out.I'd expected Ethan to go back to Julie. When I walked out, he was still sitting on the curb outside. His shirt was torn. His lip was split, dried blood at the corner. Silas's crew had worked him over.He saw me and was on his feet immediately, eyes red. "Anya. Finally." He was moving toward me already. "Don't be angry. I'm taking you home. Julie's gone. I sent her away. Don't do this to me."I let him take my wrist for about two seconds, a wave of revulsion washing over me. Then I pulled free and walked around him without a word.He grabbed my arm and yanked me off balance. "Say something. Anya."I stopped. I undid two buttons on my blouse. On my chest, the marks from the night before. They broke something in him. He stared at them like he was waiting for them to disappear. He reached out and tried to rub them away.I stepped back. The bodyguard came forward and pulled him off. He fought th

Ethan tracked me to the hotel. He came in angry, gun drawn. He kicked the door in and fired at the ceiling. He checked behind the curtains, checked the bathroom. I was standing by the window smoking, perfectly calm.He swept the whole room, found no one else, and seemed to breathe again."Anya. Come home. This is over.""Give me the gun." I nodded at it.He handed it over without thinking, just like that, the reflex of years. He trusted me completely. Trusted I would never hurt him. Trusted I would never leave.I turned the piece over in my hand once. "Divorce papers are on the table."Ethan thought I was still performing."We're not doing this. Come back with me. You'll sleep better, eat better. I'll take care of you.""Who said she's not eating better?" Silas Drake appeared in the doorway, holding breakfast. He was half-dressed, still in his hotel robe, like he'd stepped out for two minutes.Ethan went rigid. He almost laughed. "Anya. Come on. You're not actually doing this. You woul

"You saw me at the casino today. Why didn't you say anything?"I looked at him. "Is there a reason I should have?"He didn't like that answer. He didn't have anywhere to take it."I'm your husband. A hello is too much to ask?"I gave him a thin smile. "No. I just didn't want to. We're business partners now. That's it."He had nothing to say to that. "Fine. As long as you stop causing scenes."I ignored him.Indeed. I should have done this from the start. Better late than not at all. After dinner, nothing between us as usual. I
