Chapter 1

The atmosphere in the living room of the Kane mansion was ice-cold.

Vanessa's parents stared at the divorce agreement on the table, unable to believe their eyes.

After all, in all the times Vanessa had threatened suicide over another man, I'd never once brought up divorce.

"Evan, Vanessa's still a child at heart. You two have been childhood sweethearts for so many years. She still loves you. Otherwise, she never would've said back then that you were the only man she'd ever marry..."

Diane always used the same line to smooth things over between Vanessa and me.

Even I had believed Vanessa would come around, that one day she'd finally see how good I was to her.

I let out a sigh and, for once, pushed back.

"Diane, that was ten years ago. A lot can change in ten years. If she can't settle down and feels trapped with me, I'm not going to force it anymore."

Before they could keep trying to talk me around, I calmly took out Vanessa's miscarriage report.

I drew a deep breath, then pushed a small box across the table toward them.

"The baby's in there. Just twenty weeks. When they took it out, its heart had already formed. It still had a heartbeat..."

My eyes stung. No matter how hard I tried to keep my emotions in check, my voice wouldn't stop shaking.

When Diane saw the report and the box that held the baby, she nearly fainted.

Even Richard, who was usually so even-tempered, flew into a rage.

Then I sent them the photos from my phone, pictures of Vanessa and Lucas Reed in bed together.

"She lost the baby while the two of them were sleeping together. I've already buried the story. No one knows."

Watching me clean up Vanessa's mess with practiced ease, Richard let out a heavy sigh.

Then he made the biggest concession he could.

"Give Vanessa one more month. If she's still acting out after that, I'll agree to the divorce."

Before I could say anything, there was a noise at the front door.

Vanessa walked in with Lucas, their fingers laced together. The moment she spotted me, the smile froze on her face.

"Evan? What are you doing here? Running to my parents to tattle on me again? That's all you're good for. What else can you do besides beg my parents?"

Her shrill voice rang through the entire room.

Diane clutched her chest and stamped her foot in frustration.

"Vanessa, what were you thinking? Evan's been so good to you. How could you do something like this?"

Even Richard was angry enough to raise his hand and slap her.

This time, I didn't step in front of her the way I used to.

Lucas, clearly hurting for her, squared up to her parents in protest.

"Mr. and Mrs. Kane, I know you don't like me, but Vanessa's your own daughter. You can't treat her like this!"

Vanessa pressed a hand to her swollen cheek. Then she noticed the miscarriage report lying open on the table, and it all clicked.

She shot me a vicious glare.

The next second, she threw her arms around me and held on tight. It took me a moment to realize it was Vanessa. Her long hair was cut short now, and she wore flats. She still couldn't hide how exhausted she looked.I pushed her away and put some distance between us.Vanessa looked a little embarrassed, too. She hesitated for a long time before speaking."I tried to find you before, but your friends said you'd gone overseas."Have you been doing okay these past few years? Do your old injuries still hurt? And your hand... Has the strength come back?"Her sudden concern stirred something odd in me."I've been doing fine. The project's done, so I came back."The moment I finished, Vanessa blurted out, "So are you going to stay here for good now? Is there someone you like?"I looked at her calmly and didn't answer.Once it hit her, she gave an awkward laugh, her fingers twisting the hem of her top."My parents have been wanting to see you all these years. If you're ever free..."

"Ms. Kane, we're business partners. That's all."Head down, Vanessa finally stopped talking. She turned and walked toward Lucas. After that, I spent a long time buried in work.Sometimes I even had to cut into my sleep to fly to different countries on business.Three years later, the overseas project was finally finished, and my part in it came to an end.Life gradually slowed down. When my friends heard I was back, they threw me a welcome-home dinner. As soon as they saw me, the conversation automatically turned to Vanessa."You two were childhood sweethearts for over twenty years. How did it end up like this?""Sure, cheating's pretty normal in our circle, but can a woman really change her mind that fast?"I figured they were just teasing. I smiled and didn't respond. Then someone else spoke up."While you were flying all over the place for those projects, Vanessa came looking for you. She even tracked us down to ask for your contact info."That reminded me.After the d

She'd only given birth a short time ago. She should've still been at home recovering. She looked visibly exhausted. Even makeup couldn't hide the dark circles under her eyes. She looked ten years older. But when she saw me, her lifeless face suddenly came alive."Evan."She said my name. I just nodded politely and went into the private room. This deal was with Kane Group. Even though Vanessa and I were divorced, business was business. But once Lucas saw it was me, he went back on the deal he'd already agreed to.I wasn't the only one caught off guard. Even the other partners were stunned."Mr. Reed, we've already signed this contract with Mr. Hale. If you back out now, we'll owe a penalty for breach of contract."Lucas's assistant sounded anxious. But Lucas couldn't have cared less."It's not like I can't afford the penalty. If my wife hadn't insisted on coming, I wouldn't even be here."He turned to look at Vanessa."Since the deal's not happening, we're done for today."

"We really hope you'll come to Vanessa's wedding..."I knew what Diane was up to.She was convinced I still had feelings for Vanessa, and that seeing her marry someone else would get to me.She was hoping Vanessa and I would get back together.I politely declined.I only saw the wedding on a livestream.Vanessa had married her true love, but she didn't look as happy as I'd expected."Didn't she say she was marrying the love of her life? Why is Ms. Kane keeping such a straight face?""Maybe she just can't believe it. Nobody expected Evan to really let her go this time.""Does it look to you like Vanessa regrets it?""What's there to regret? She chose this path herself..."I closed the livestream and focused on my own life. When I had free time, I'd visit the cemetery to see the child who never got the chance to be born.Gradually, I realized I'd made peace with everything that had happened.I rarely thought about Vanessa anymore.Even the way I used to love her was slowly

The moment the words left my mouth, everyone in the room exchanged looks.Vanessa's hand slipped off my arm. Her eyes went wide."What do you mean?"She quickly flipped through the divorce agreement I'd placed on the table. When she reached my signature, her breath caught."What do you mean we don't have a future?"The others finally snapped out of it and started murmuring."What's going on? This isn't how it was supposed to go."After all, in their eyes, I was just Vanessa's lapdog. Even if there was going to be a divorce, I had no right to be the one asking for it.Having heard about Vanessa's suicide threat, Richard and Diane finally arrived.Seeing she was fine, they breathed a sigh of relief. Then it hit them that this had been another stunt. When they saw the divorce agreement in Vanessa's hand, they knew they couldn't keep it from her any longer."Mom, Dad, you knew Evan wanted to divorce me? And you agreed?"Vanessa's hand trembled around the agreement.Richard sig

Vanessa's expression tensed sharply. When she saw the blood on the floor, she stumbled a few steps toward me.But Lucas's pained cries quickly pulled all her attention away. She cast me one hurried glance over her shoulder, then left with Lucas. The one month her parents had given us still felt too long.During that time, I didn't contact Vanessa once. I spent all my time handling the divorce. As for Lucas grabbing projects at the company, I turned a blind eye.It was as if they were strangers to me.But Vanessa wasn't as flashy as she used to be. If anything, her attitude softened quite a bit."I told Lucas to stay out of that project. It's still yours."I gave a noncommittal reply and said nothing more.Faced with my indifference, Vanessa pressed her lips together, then spoke with a hint of urgency."Why aren't you happy? You didn't used to be like this."I set my work aside and looked at her, my expression unchanged."I said I'd stop keeping tabs on you, and I meant it.
