Chapter 2

Author: Nora Blythe
"Losing the baby was just a warning to you.

"Every time I see your face, I want to throw up. I came here to tell you all something. I want to marry for love, and I want to be with Lucas!"

Her voice was so cold and final that my heart ached with every beat.

"If you don't let me be with Lucas, I'll bash my head against the wall and end it right now."

Only then did I lift my head and meet her savage stare.

Diane, protective of her daughter, quickly grabbed my hand.

"She only said that because she's heartbroken over losing the baby. Take her home and let her rest. Spend some time with her. All we want is for the two of you to be happy..."

I don't remember how I left.

Looking back, Vanessa had never once looked at me like that before.

Ten years ago, she was the one who begged her parents to let her get engaged to me. She was the one who swore I was the only man she'd ever marry.

"Evan, give Vanessa one more chance. You two have been together for ten years. I know it's hard for you to let go of her, too."

Richard sighed beside me before I left.

They all seemed to think I'd forgive her, like I always did.

When I got home, a friend from our circle sent me a link to a livestream.

It was being broadcast to the entire internet.

Vanessa and Lucas had gone to Iceland to chase the northern lights, and they were kissing beneath them.

Countless viewers watched their romance unfold with envy.

The comments started pouring in.

"Ms. Kane has cheated ninety-nine times. Has she finally settled down and found true love?"

"Bet her husband's about to storm over there and catch them in the act."

"Relax. Once Ms. Kane threatens to kill herself one more time, Evan Hale will go right back to being her good little doormat."

"He's only got himself to blame for being such a pushover..."

The speculation and insults online didn't matter to me.

I stared blankly at the two of them on the screen, my grip on my phone tightening.

Chasing the northern lights and kissing beneath them had been a promise between Vanessa and me.

She'd told me that, according to legend, lovers who did that would be blessed by the god of love and stay together forever.

She'd said we would do it the year we were most in love.

But ten years into our marriage, she'd kept that promise with Lucas first.

I'd once asked her why she treated me this way. Vanessa had answered offhandedly.

"I don't love you anymore. The spark's gone. What did you think it was?"

I quietly closed the livestream, but my friend was frantic.

"Your wife ran off with another man, and you're this calm? It's blowing up all over the internet. You're not going to handle it?"

While Vanessa and Lucas were lost in their kiss, my cheating compilation got another update. It had videos of all ninety-nine of Vanessa's affairs, along with photos of me begging her, my dignity thrown to the wind.

In the past, whenever something like this happened, I'd deal with it right away to protect the Kane family's reputation.

This time, I just let it spread.

I gave my friend a single answer.

"I'm not handling it. Not now, not ever again."

Vanessa didn't come home until a week later. She clearly hadn't expected me to be so calm this time.

"You're being a lot more sensible this time. I thought you'd shamelessly beg me to come back again. You've been cheated on so many times. Why not think about divorcing me?"

Vanessa was always in a great mood whenever she saw me humiliated.

I didn't look up. My voice stayed flat.

"Do whatever you want. I won't stop you."

The smile at the corner of her mouth stiffened. My attitude had caught her completely off guard.

But she quickly recovered.

"Don't think I'll change my mind just because my parents are on your side! I told you, Lucas is the love of my life. I'm definitely going to—"

The next second, she threw her arms around me and held on tight. It took me a moment to realize it was Vanessa. Her long hair was cut short now, and she wore flats. She still couldn't hide how exhausted she looked.I pushed her away and put some distance between us.Vanessa looked a little embarrassed, too. She hesitated for a long time before speaking."I tried to find you before, but your friends said you'd gone overseas."Have you been doing okay these past few years? Do your old injuries still hurt? And your hand... Has the strength come back?"Her sudden concern stirred something odd in me."I've been doing fine. The project's done, so I came back."The moment I finished, Vanessa blurted out, "So are you going to stay here for good now? Is there someone you like?"I looked at her calmly and didn't answer.Once it hit her, she gave an awkward laugh, her fingers twisting the hem of her top."My parents have been wanting to see you all these years. If you're ever free..."

"Ms. Kane, we're business partners. That's all."Head down, Vanessa finally stopped talking. She turned and walked toward Lucas. After that, I spent a long time buried in work.Sometimes I even had to cut into my sleep to fly to different countries on business.Three years later, the overseas project was finally finished, and my part in it came to an end.Life gradually slowed down. When my friends heard I was back, they threw me a welcome-home dinner. As soon as they saw me, the conversation automatically turned to Vanessa."You two were childhood sweethearts for over twenty years. How did it end up like this?""Sure, cheating's pretty normal in our circle, but can a woman really change her mind that fast?"I figured they were just teasing. I smiled and didn't respond. Then someone else spoke up."While you were flying all over the place for those projects, Vanessa came looking for you. She even tracked us down to ask for your contact info."That reminded me.After the d

She'd only given birth a short time ago. She should've still been at home recovering. She looked visibly exhausted. Even makeup couldn't hide the dark circles under her eyes. She looked ten years older. But when she saw me, her lifeless face suddenly came alive."Evan."She said my name. I just nodded politely and went into the private room. This deal was with Kane Group. Even though Vanessa and I were divorced, business was business. But once Lucas saw it was me, he went back on the deal he'd already agreed to.I wasn't the only one caught off guard. Even the other partners were stunned."Mr. Reed, we've already signed this contract with Mr. Hale. If you back out now, we'll owe a penalty for breach of contract."Lucas's assistant sounded anxious. But Lucas couldn't have cared less."It's not like I can't afford the penalty. If my wife hadn't insisted on coming, I wouldn't even be here."He turned to look at Vanessa."Since the deal's not happening, we're done for today."

"We really hope you'll come to Vanessa's wedding..."I knew what Diane was up to.She was convinced I still had feelings for Vanessa, and that seeing her marry someone else would get to me.She was hoping Vanessa and I would get back together.I politely declined.I only saw the wedding on a livestream.Vanessa had married her true love, but she didn't look as happy as I'd expected."Didn't she say she was marrying the love of her life? Why is Ms. Kane keeping such a straight face?""Maybe she just can't believe it. Nobody expected Evan to really let her go this time.""Does it look to you like Vanessa regrets it?""What's there to regret? She chose this path herself..."I closed the livestream and focused on my own life. When I had free time, I'd visit the cemetery to see the child who never got the chance to be born.Gradually, I realized I'd made peace with everything that had happened.I rarely thought about Vanessa anymore.Even the way I used to love her was slowly

The moment the words left my mouth, everyone in the room exchanged looks.Vanessa's hand slipped off my arm. Her eyes went wide."What do you mean?"She quickly flipped through the divorce agreement I'd placed on the table. When she reached my signature, her breath caught."What do you mean we don't have a future?"The others finally snapped out of it and started murmuring."What's going on? This isn't how it was supposed to go."After all, in their eyes, I was just Vanessa's lapdog. Even if there was going to be a divorce, I had no right to be the one asking for it.Having heard about Vanessa's suicide threat, Richard and Diane finally arrived.Seeing she was fine, they breathed a sigh of relief. Then it hit them that this had been another stunt. When they saw the divorce agreement in Vanessa's hand, they knew they couldn't keep it from her any longer."Mom, Dad, you knew Evan wanted to divorce me? And you agreed?"Vanessa's hand trembled around the agreement.Richard sig

Vanessa's expression tensed sharply. When she saw the blood on the floor, she stumbled a few steps toward me.But Lucas's pained cries quickly pulled all her attention away. She cast me one hurried glance over her shoulder, then left with Lucas. The one month her parents had given us still felt too long.During that time, I didn't contact Vanessa once. I spent all my time handling the divorce. As for Lucas grabbing projects at the company, I turned a blind eye.It was as if they were strangers to me.But Vanessa wasn't as flashy as she used to be. If anything, her attitude softened quite a bit."I told Lucas to stay out of that project. It's still yours."I gave a noncommittal reply and said nothing more.Faced with my indifference, Vanessa pressed her lips together, then spoke with a hint of urgency."Why aren't you happy? You didn't used to be like this."I set my work aside and looked at her, my expression unchanged."I said I'd stop keeping tabs on you, and I meant it.
