Chapter 3

Author: Nora Blythe
I stood up and glanced at her sideways.

"Marry him? I won't object. I'll even explain everything to your parents myself."

Vanessa's composure cracked. Before she could finish, she stepped in front of me to block my way.

She stared hard at me, a trace of unease in her eyes.

"You used to deal with this kind of thing right away. Why aren't you doing anything this time?"

Vanessa had threatened suicide ninety-nine times. The first ninety-eight had all been over different men.

But now, she said she'd found true love.

The corner of my mouth lifted in a bitter smile.

"You said it's true love, so I'm stepping aside."

The conversation ended badly.

Maybe she was deliberately trying to get under my skin, because the very next day, Vanessa brought Lucas into the company.

The moment I opened my office door, I heard Lucas's hearty laugh.

"You guys don't have to feel pressured just because of Vanessa's position. Just treat me like any other coworker."

He was sprawled in my chair as if he owned the place. He casually tossed the photo of Vanessa and me from my desk into the trash.

When he saw me, he shot me a smug, provocative look.

"Sorry, Mr. Hale. Vanessa said this office is mine from now on. Obviously, the stuff on this desk has to go, too. If you still want it, you'll have to fish it out of the trash yourself."

He glanced pointedly at the photo in the trash can.

The employees around us let out stifled laughs.

Then he picked up the proposal on my desk.

It was a project I'd spent years building. Just as I reached to snatch it back, Lucas stepped away.

"Mr. Hale, I don't think this project suits you. Same as Vanessa. She said she'll give me whatever I want, so I'm taking this project."

Over the years, I'd grown used to Vanessa's lovers taunting me.

But hearing Lucas say that, my heart sank like a stone.

Vanessa knew how much this project meant to me. I'd poured nearly everything I had into it.

My voice went cold.

"I've always been the lead on this project. Who do you think you are? Even if you got in through connections, you'd still have to start as an intern."

Lucas smiled.

"So what? Vanessa doesn't care about you at all. You've been clinging to her for years. You really think people call you Mr. Hale out of respect? I'm sure everyone's seen those cheating compilations of yours by now.

"She even said she'd have my baby. Oh, sorry. Did I bring up a sore subject? That's rough. Your baby was only twenty weeks along, wasn't it..."

Before he could finish, I clenched my fist and slammed it into his face.

"How dare you bring up the baby to my face!"

Every punch landed hard. Lucas covered his face and kept yelling for help.

Vanessa rushed over as soon as she heard.

"Evan, have you lost your mind? If anything happens to Lucas, I'll never let you get away with it!"

She shoved me away with all her strength.

My lower back slammed into the sharp corner of the desk. The color drained from my face, and I dropped to my knees.

Blood seeped from my back and stained my shirt red.

Vanessa turned anxiously to Lucas.

"Lucas, are you okay? This is all my fault. I shouldn't have brought you here on my own..."

There was a time when Vanessa had been this tender with me, too.

I fought through the pain, got to my feet, and laughed at myself.

"He'll be fine. You like him, right? I won't stand in your way anymore. Not now, not ever. Whether you live or die has nothing to do with me anymore."

In that instant, it was as if I'd let go of every feeling and obsession I'd held for Vanessa for more than ten years.

The next second, she threw her arms around me and held on tight. It took me a moment to realize it was Vanessa. Her long hair was cut short now, and she wore flats. She still couldn't hide how exhausted she looked.I pushed her away and put some distance between us.Vanessa looked a little embarrassed, too. She hesitated for a long time before speaking."I tried to find you before, but your friends said you'd gone overseas."Have you been doing okay these past few years? Do your old injuries still hurt? And your hand... Has the strength come back?"Her sudden concern stirred something odd in me."I've been doing fine. The project's done, so I came back."The moment I finished, Vanessa blurted out, "So are you going to stay here for good now? Is there someone you like?"I looked at her calmly and didn't answer.Once it hit her, she gave an awkward laugh, her fingers twisting the hem of her top."My parents have been wanting to see you all these years. If you're ever free..."

"Ms. Kane, we're business partners. That's all."Head down, Vanessa finally stopped talking. She turned and walked toward Lucas. After that, I spent a long time buried in work.Sometimes I even had to cut into my sleep to fly to different countries on business.Three years later, the overseas project was finally finished, and my part in it came to an end.Life gradually slowed down. When my friends heard I was back, they threw me a welcome-home dinner. As soon as they saw me, the conversation automatically turned to Vanessa."You two were childhood sweethearts for over twenty years. How did it end up like this?""Sure, cheating's pretty normal in our circle, but can a woman really change her mind that fast?"I figured they were just teasing. I smiled and didn't respond. Then someone else spoke up."While you were flying all over the place for those projects, Vanessa came looking for you. She even tracked us down to ask for your contact info."That reminded me.After the d

She'd only given birth a short time ago. She should've still been at home recovering. She looked visibly exhausted. Even makeup couldn't hide the dark circles under her eyes. She looked ten years older. But when she saw me, her lifeless face suddenly came alive."Evan."She said my name. I just nodded politely and went into the private room. This deal was with Kane Group. Even though Vanessa and I were divorced, business was business. But once Lucas saw it was me, he went back on the deal he'd already agreed to.I wasn't the only one caught off guard. Even the other partners were stunned."Mr. Reed, we've already signed this contract with Mr. Hale. If you back out now, we'll owe a penalty for breach of contract."Lucas's assistant sounded anxious. But Lucas couldn't have cared less."It's not like I can't afford the penalty. If my wife hadn't insisted on coming, I wouldn't even be here."He turned to look at Vanessa."Since the deal's not happening, we're done for today."

"We really hope you'll come to Vanessa's wedding..."I knew what Diane was up to.She was convinced I still had feelings for Vanessa, and that seeing her marry someone else would get to me.She was hoping Vanessa and I would get back together.I politely declined.I only saw the wedding on a livestream.Vanessa had married her true love, but she didn't look as happy as I'd expected."Didn't she say she was marrying the love of her life? Why is Ms. Kane keeping such a straight face?""Maybe she just can't believe it. Nobody expected Evan to really let her go this time.""Does it look to you like Vanessa regrets it?""What's there to regret? She chose this path herself..."I closed the livestream and focused on my own life. When I had free time, I'd visit the cemetery to see the child who never got the chance to be born.Gradually, I realized I'd made peace with everything that had happened.I rarely thought about Vanessa anymore.Even the way I used to love her was slowly

The moment the words left my mouth, everyone in the room exchanged looks.Vanessa's hand slipped off my arm. Her eyes went wide."What do you mean?"She quickly flipped through the divorce agreement I'd placed on the table. When she reached my signature, her breath caught."What do you mean we don't have a future?"The others finally snapped out of it and started murmuring."What's going on? This isn't how it was supposed to go."After all, in their eyes, I was just Vanessa's lapdog. Even if there was going to be a divorce, I had no right to be the one asking for it.Having heard about Vanessa's suicide threat, Richard and Diane finally arrived.Seeing she was fine, they breathed a sigh of relief. Then it hit them that this had been another stunt. When they saw the divorce agreement in Vanessa's hand, they knew they couldn't keep it from her any longer."Mom, Dad, you knew Evan wanted to divorce me? And you agreed?"Vanessa's hand trembled around the agreement.Richard sig

Vanessa's expression tensed sharply. When she saw the blood on the floor, she stumbled a few steps toward me.But Lucas's pained cries quickly pulled all her attention away. She cast me one hurried glance over her shoulder, then left with Lucas. The one month her parents had given us still felt too long.During that time, I didn't contact Vanessa once. I spent all my time handling the divorce. As for Lucas grabbing projects at the company, I turned a blind eye.It was as if they were strangers to me.But Vanessa wasn't as flashy as she used to be. If anything, her attitude softened quite a bit."I told Lucas to stay out of that project. It's still yours."I gave a noncommittal reply and said nothing more.Faced with my indifference, Vanessa pressed her lips together, then spoke with a hint of urgency."Why aren't you happy? You didn't used to be like this."I set my work aside and looked at her, my expression unchanged."I said I'd stop keeping tabs on you, and I meant it.
