Janice's POV

By the time I took the elevator downstairs, the movers from the moving company had arrived.

"Ms. Walker, we'll start moving your things now."

I nodded, and my phone buzzed with a message from Simon.

[Where did you go? Don't just wander off like that.]

I blinked. The chat window was a wall of my own bubbles, showing that I had always been the one reaching out. This sudden show of concern made my fingers tremble.

The moment I opened the chat, another message popped up.

[Go downstairs to the hardware store and buy me a wrench. Gem doesn't have one.]

I stared at the two messages for several seconds.

So… He had not noticed I wasn't behind him at all. He had only noticed I was gone because he wanted something from me.

I scrolled up through our chat history. Every message had something to do with Gem.

[Give Gem the skincare products your coworker brought you from overseas. I'll buy you another set.]

[Gem said she wanted coastal cuisine for dinner. We'll go together after work later. I already made a reservation.]

The messages Simon sent me were always statements. He had already made the decision, and my opinion had never crossed his mind.

The most recent text message was from a rainy day, when I asked if he could come pick me up.

[I'm already home. Take a cab home.]

The next second, Gem posted a photo on her social media. It showed someone with a tilted umbrella shielding her as she got into the passenger seat.

[I almost got caught in the rain. Good thing someone came to save me!]

I knew that car interior too well.

I used to think he was my boyfriend, and Gem was my best friend. I should have been happy they got along.

And yet, every time I took a step back, Simon pushed further.

This time, I didn't reply.

As I packed my things in my room, Simon sent another message.

[Why aren't you back yet? Gem said she wants plainland cuisine, so I'll take her there first. Come over by yourself later.]

This wasn't the first time. We might have clearly agreed to have dinner together, but whenever work or traffic made me a little late, all that was left for me was cold scraps.

Simon cared little if I was hurt by that.

"Gem has a sensitive stomach, so she ate first. It's just a little cold. It still tastes fine. Stop making a fuss."

Stop making a fuss.

When a pipe burst in my apartment and water flooded the place, he said the same thing when I called him.

"How can I have time to deal with that for you? Find a repairman yourself. Stop making a fuss."

So I washed the curtains myself, replaced the light bulbs myself, and slowly learned not to rely on him.

But with Gem, he became a different person.

"You're a woman. You don't have to force yourself to be so tough. If you need anything, I'll help you. Anyway, you live so close to Janice, so it's not a problem."

I couldn't understand it. It was the same kind of help. When it was me, I was making a fuss. When it was for Gem, it was not a problem at all.

I swallowed the bitterness in my throat and sent Simon a message.

[You two go ahead. I have something else I need to do.]

After a long while, he finally replied.

[Throwing a tantrum again? Just how old are you, Janice? Stop acting out like this.]

I had thrown a tantrum before.

Last winter, I had a fever of 103 degrees Fahrenheit. I was freezing all over, and I called him to ask him to bring me medicine.

But Simon said he was at Gem's place. Gem's cramps were so bad that she couldn't get out of bed, and he was making her something to drink

I said I felt awful, too. He was silent for two seconds before saying, "You can still call me, can't you? How serious can it be? Just order delivery. It'll be there in twenty minutes. Just hold on."

That was the first time I felt I couldn't take it anymore.

He was my boyfriend, but I never came first with him.

And so, I told him I wanted to break up.

Simon said nothing and blocked me first. He knew I loved him very much. He knew I couldn't leave him. So, he let me cry for two days until I ran out of tears.

Only then did he have Gem ask me out for dinner.

Pathetically, I took him back. After that, I never made a fuss again.

This time, it was different.

I wasn't throwing a tantrum.

I meant it.

After that, my relationship with them was finally over. I no longer had to guess what was going on between them, and I no longer had to argue with myself about it endlessly.Life became peaceful, and I dedicated myself to work. The final review of the last project in Northton went very well, and the client was satisfied. The company gave me a bonus in recognition, and the amount was much higher than I expected. After the meeting, my manager smiled at me. "Janice, there's a supervisor position open at the branch office. Are you interested?"I froze, unable to react for a moment."The transfer won't be immediate, of course. It won't be decided until after the New Year's holidays." My manager waved a hand. "Think it over. There's no rush to give me an answer."Being recognized at work gave me satisfaction I had never felt before.By the time I got off work, it was already dark.I walked out of the office and found Harry waiting by the flower bed outside, holding two cups of milk

  • Against the Wind   Chapter 8

After that day, Simon never texted me or came to look for me again. I heard he had requested a transfer and went to a distant city in the north.Over the phone, my friend sounded like he was in disbelief. "I heard he applied it himself and no one could talk him out of it. He had so many projects on hand, but he just abandoned them all. Was it because of you?"I didn't answer. I simply smiled and changed the subject. Whether it had anything to do with me no longer mattered. From now on, we would go our separate ways and have nothing to do with each other. That was probably the best ending for us.Not long after, I heard news about Gem.Soon after Simon and I broke up, she confessed her feelings to him. However, Simon had become unusually cold. He even told her bluntly, "If you hadn't come between us, would Janice have ever left me?"Everyone who knew him said he had lost his mind. He blamed every mistake on Gem, and he even forced her to resign and go back to her hometown.I

When I returned to Southburg, I got a call from a coworker just as my plane landed."Janice, thank goodness! You finally picked up. There's someone claiming to be your boyfriend who has been sitting in reception all morning. He won't leave no matter what we say."When I got to the office, Simon was still sitting in reception. It had only been a few days since I last saw him, but he looked exhausted. His shirt was wrinkled, stubble had grown on his chin, and obvious dark circles hung under his eyes. The moment he saw me, he shot up from the couch, his eyes lighting up."Janice, you're back!"To keep him from causing issues at the office, I asked Simon to meet me at a nearby cafe.Simon sat across from me and asked softly, "Janice, why didn't you tell me you moved?"I cut him off calmly. "Simon, we've already broken up.""Broken up?" he repeated the words, and his brows slowly furrowed together. "You think we're separated just because you said we broke up? Janice, what exactly

  • Against the Wind   Chapter 6

Janice's POVAfter I moved, my life became much quieter. In the past, I pushed everything else aside to work around Simon's schedule. I turned down business trips, training sessions, and gatherings with friends.Every time my manager asked for volunteers to take an assignment out of the city, I always lowered my head and stayed silent.Eventually, everyone knew. "Janice? Her boyfriend always comes first."I kept my schedule clear just so I could be there whenever Simon called. But now, I only have to think about myself. I no longer had to consider him. That day, my manager asked again during the meeting. "Who's willing to go for the Northton project next week?"The meeting room went silent as everyone lowered their heads, avoiding his eyes.Next week was Valentine's Day, and no one wanted to travel for work then.In that room full of silence, I was the only one who raised my hand. "I'll go."My manager looked up at me surprised before nodding. "Alright, Janice. You and Harr

Third Person POVHearing the neighbor's words, Simon froze.Moved out? But… Janice had never told him about her moving.Panic began to rise in his chest. He took out his phone, his fingers trembling slightly as he sent Janice a message.[Janice, you moved?]The message wouldn't go through. He pulled up her contact and tried calling her, only to realize she had blocked his number. The elevator doors opened nearby, and Gem walked over to him."Simon, is Janice still throwing a tantrum? Why don't you come upstairs and have a seat for a while?" she asked gently. Gem had always looked gentle and understanding. In the past, whenever this happened, Simon would always think Janice was immature and Gem was the considerate one.But today, her voice only made him feel irritated."I'm not going," he said with a frown, his voice a little hoarse. "Janice moved and no one told me about it. Where did she go?"Gem froze. "Moved? When?"Simon didn't answer. He had already started calling

  • Against the Wind   Chapter 4

A few days later, Simon sent me an address along with a text message. [My mom invited you to dinner to talk about the wedding.]I repeatedly typed and deleted in the chat box. After hesitating for a long time, I finally replied with one word. [Fine.]Even if I had decided to break up with him, I still owed his mother Danielle an explanation in person. She had treated me well over the past seven years, after all. When I arrived at the private room, Danielle was already there. I exchanged a few polite words with her before Simon arrived late together with Gem. "Mom, Gem works next door, and she's Janice's good friend too. Since this restaurant is close to her work place, I brought her along to eat," he said.Danielle faked a cough, her expression darkened. However, Simon seemed not to notice as he picked up the menu and started ordering.Every dish he ordered was something Gem liked. He and Gem both liked something spicy, but I didn't.Whenever the three of us shared a crawfi
