Dan McLeod froze, looking as if he couldn't believe what he was hearing. Just as he was about to speak, Judy Morrison let out a scornful laugh.

"Joel Plunkett, you're going overboard with this act of yours. Who do you think you are to stop Dan?"

"Judy, your husband seems genuinely pissed this time," Dan said with a bitter smile.

He took half a step back, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the handle of his suitcase tightly.

Judy rushed over in a few quick strides, seized my wrist, and yanked me to the side.

"Joel, you're just a security guard. Where do you get off pretending to be a customs officer?"

Dan lowered his eyes, his voice tinged with helplessness. "Forget it, Judy. He probably just cares too much about you…"

"Cares too much?" Judy repeated with a cold scoff. "He's just being petty and jealous."

She turned around and glared at me, her chest heaving as she struggled to contain her anger.

"Do you know that Dan just came back from an epidemic-stricken area? He's been overseas, saving lives in the midst of gunfire, while all you do is obsess over discounted sneakers and keep tabs on my every move!

"You're pathetic and selfish! You aren't worth even a single strand of Dan's hair!"

Every word of hers felt like it had been dipped in poison before plunging straight into my heart.

Meanwhile, the strange odor was getting stronger. If the suitcase made it through the exit checkpoint and into the public area, the consequences would be catastrophic.

When Dan realized I wasn't going to back down, his brow gradually furrowed. All of a sudden, he let out a weak groan before leaning feebly against Judy's shoulder.

"Judy… My shoulder really hurts. I think my old injury from the epidemic zone has flared up again…"

Judy immediately released my wrist and wrapped an arm around Dan. Her tone was panicked, and her eyes were filled with concern.

"Dan, are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?"

When she turned to look at me again, her gaze was murderous.

"Joel Plunkett, if anything happens to Dan, I swear I'll make you pay!"

"Mr. McLeod," I said, unmoved by her fury. "Please cooperate and open your suitcase."

"Why should he cooperate with you?" Judy snapped, standing up straight and planting herself in front of Dan as she glared down at me. "You're in plain clothes, you have no ID, and no official paperwork authorizing you to do this. Who the hell do you think you are?"

She wasn't wrong.

Today was my day off, so I wasn't in uniform, and I hadn't brought my work ID with me. The only thing that could prove who I was was locked inside the secure cabinet at the office.

Seeing me fall silent, Judy sneered.

"You always pull this same stunt when you throw a tantrum. You start trouble, and then when things get out of hand, you play the innocent victim."

More and more travelers gathered around us, and their whispers crashed over me like a wave.

"What's that guy's problem? What does someone else's suitcase have to do with him?"

"He's probably just a jealous loser. The wife's ex-boyfriend came back, and he can't handle it."

Dan patted Judy's arm reassuringly.

"Don't be mad. Joel's probably just letting his concern get the better of him. Maybe I should just open the suitcase and show him."

His tone was gentle and his manner generous, which only made me look even more like a troublemaking lunatic by comparison.

Judy's expression softened even further as she looked at him. "No need to indulge him."

Dan smiled and shook his head as he reached for the combination lock on his suitcase. But as he entered the code, I noticed his thumb quickly pressed a raised button on the side of the lid.

He was switching the contents inside!

My eyes widened, and I lunged forward, slamming my hand down on his. "Don't move!"

Judy completely snapped. She shoved me hard, sending me stumbling back into the metal railing behind me. A dull, agonizing pain exploded in my lower back—the exact spot where I had undergone surgery years ago after saving her life.

I doubled over, clutching my spine. Cold sweat instantly soaked through my shirt.

But Judy didn't even spare me a second glance. She took Dan's hand, grabbed the suitcase, and strode toward the exit.

"Judy Morrison, stop right there!"

She stopped and turned around to look at me. A cold, impatient smirk tugged at her lips.

"What exactly do you want, Joel? Do I really have to say it out loud in front of everyone? Fine. I regret marrying you. Are you happy now?"

"There's no hurry," Heather said with a smile as she pulled her hand back, still keeping a comfortable distance between us."I came by today to drop off some freshly imported oranges. Didn't you say you've been having a poor appetite lately? These have just the right balance of sweet and tart."She turned, retrieved a fruit basket from her trunk, and handed it to me. Her fingertips lightly brushed against mine before she quickly pulled away."I should get going. Get some rest, and don't overthink things."As she turned to get into her car, I gripped the basket handle tightly and, on impulse, called out, "Heather."She turned back, a questioning look in her eyes.Taking a deep breath and meeting her gaze, I gave voice to the soft fluttering in my heart that I'd been keeping tucked away."I'm not saying no. I just… Can you give me a little time? I want to take things slow and heal."She blinked at me before a smile spread across her face. The dimples at the corners of her mouth d

Heather paused and turned back with a smile, faint dimples appearing at the corners of her lips."You're a specially appointed consultant for our Customs Department. If it weren't for you this time, the consequences would've been unimaginable. We're the ones who should be saying thank you."She paused for a second, then added, "You don't have to be so formal with me. Make yourself at home here."I watched her slender figure as she walked away. A thousand words crowded my throat, but in the end, all I managed was a quiet, "Okay."The days that followed were exceptionally peaceful. The housekeeper arrived on time every day to cook and clean, preparing all kinds of nourishing soups and dishes to help me recover.Every day, I went for walks along the path in the yard and read while soaking up the sun. My physical wounds gradually healed, and the one in my heart slowly scabbed over, too.Heather stopped by every two or three days to bring me household essentials and check on my recove

"Not okay," I answered. "Judy, can't we just part ways amicably? If you don't sign, I'll take this to court, and it won't look good for either of us."Judy stared at the utterly unmoved expression on my face, and the last trace of color drained from hers. She stumbled back half a step, bracing herself against the dining table."Have you already hooked up with Heather?" she asked, her voice hoarse. "Is that why you can't wait to divorce me? So you two can run off together?"Her absurd accusation made me burst out laughing."Even now, you still can't admit you were wrong," I said, shaking my head. "All you know to do is blame other people."I paused. Looking at her ashen face, I enunciated my next words clearly."There's nothing going on between Heather and me. I just don't want you anymore. We'll each keep what's ours. If you don't have a problem with that, go ahead and sign the papers."Judy fell silent for a long time, her fingers crumpling the edges of the divorce papers. Fina

"I want to get divorced as soon as possible. I don't want anything to do with Judy for even one more day," I said.Heather nodded, picked up her phone, and contacted a lawyer at the law firm she regularly worked with. She didn't ask a single unnecessary question the entire time, respecting my boundaries perfectly. Not long after, there was a soft knock at the door. A nurse wheeled in a meal cart, set down a bowl of warm oatmeal and a small plate of fruit, and said with a smile, "The doctor said that since you just woke up, you can only have liquids and soft foods for now. Our cafeteria made this specifically for you, so enjoy it while it's hot."After the nurse left, urgent knocking came from the door. Before we could even respond, Judy burst inside, an unmistakable mix of exhaustion and remorse written all over her face. She strode over to my bedside in a few quick steps and reached for my hand."Joel, I was wrong. I wasn't thinking straight when I said those things that day. Can

"Joel! You're bleeding a lot!" Heather exclaimed. "Your wound has completely reopened!"She took off her tactical jacket, wrapped it around me, and shifted my weight onto her shoulder."Call an ambulance! Now!" she called out, her voice anxious.Someone nearby immediately grabbed a walkie-talkie and called for help. Meanwhile, she guided me toward the exit without slowing down. Catching sight of Dan and the suitcase out of the corner of her eye, she just spat out three words."Search it carefully!"Only then did Judy seem to snap back to reality. She reflexively tried to stop us."On whose authority are you—""On the authority that he's a senior customs consultant who triggered the alarm while carrying out official duties. Does that answer your question?" Heather answered coldly without even turning around. "If you dare stand in the way again, you'll be taken into custody for obstruction of justice."Judy froze in place as she watched Heather rush me out of the terminal. Her fa

Dan's suitcase lay wide open on the polished tile floor. All anyone could see were a few ordinary changes of clothes. In one corner sat several bottles of men's cologne and skincare products, as well as a thick stack of handwritten medical notes. The crowd burst into raucous laughter at the sight."That's it? Triggering the biohazard alarm for this? The guy's a lunatic!""Talk about being dramatic! It's obviously just normal luggage, yet he insists on framing the guy.""How vicious. A pathetic excuse for a man like him belongs behind bars."Eager to put an end to the commotion so she could leave with Dan, Judy turned toward the airport security officers and yelled, "Don't listen to him. Just arrest him already.""There's something wrong with my husband here," she continued, pointing to her head as her face twisted with disgust. "Mental illness runs in the family."Her words drove into my heart like a rusty, blunt knife. When my father betrayed my mother years ago, he'd publicly
