Chapter 2

Author: September Almond
"I've regretted it for three years," Judy continued calmly, right there in front of the entire crowded terminal.

I took a step back, unable to believe that this was the same woman who had stayed by my hospital bed for three straight days and nights three years ago. This was the woman who, on our wedding night, had kissed my scars and sworn in front of my late mother's portrait that she'd cherish me, care for me, and treat me right for the rest of our lives.

Dan wrapped an arm around her waist. He lowered his gaze, while an almost imperceptible smile played at the corner of his lips. It was a smile I'd seen far too often in the photos of him in Judy's album.

"Ma'am."

An airport security guard hurried over, slightly out of breath.

"We received a complaint that someone's causing a disturbance and trying to detain another passenger's luggage."

Judy immediately pointed to me. "It's my husband. He's not mentally stable. He came to the airport, saw me talking to a friend, and just lost his mind."

"Sir, please don't interfere with other passengers' travel," the security guard said to me.

I forced down the bitterness rising in my chest and straightened up, my palms slick with cold sweat.

"I have reason to suspect that there is contraband hidden inside that suitcase. Please assist me in detaining him."

The guard frowned. "Do you have any identification?"

I opened my mouth, but Judy's mocking scoff cut me off.

"He's just a company's guard dog making 600 dollars a month. What kind of ID do you think he'd have?"

Dan chimed in right on cue, his tone a mixture of guilt and innocence.

"I'm a member of Doctors Without Borders, and I just got back from an epidemic zone in West Narlia. The suitcase contains my personal belongings and some medical notes. This gentleman… seems to have misunderstood the situation."

He pulled a credential card from his bag and handed it to the security guard.

After taking a look, the guard visibly relaxed. "Since this credential is from a legitimate organization… Sir, could you please—"

"The credential is fake," I said.

The entire crowd fell dead silent for a second before erupting into even louder laughter.

"Oh, it's fake? Let's see you produce a real one then!"

"Is this guy so mad about getting cheated on that he's lost his mind?"

"His own wife says he's mentally unstable. That poor woman, marrying a lunatic."

Judy's face darkened completely. She strode up to me and lowered her voice, speaking with the air of someone generously offering me one last chance.

"There's absolutely nothing going on between Dan and me. It's nothing like the filthy things you're imagining. Leave with me right now, Joel, and I can give you one last chance."

I didn't budge.

"You're not going to leave?"

She reached out to grab my arm, wanting to drag me along.

"Don't touch me, Judy! My old injury—"

"You're playing that card again?" she snapped, disgust filling her voice. "Last time, when you argued with me over a male student, you pretended your injury flared up and went to the hospital. Now you're claiming that the old injury you got when you took a knife for me is acting up again?"

"If you're really hurt that badly, wouldn't you be resting at home instead of coming to the airport to make a scene?"

Dan stood next to her, one hand resting on the suitcase handle while the other rummaged around inside his bag for something.

The suitcase was very close to clearing the checkpoint.

I braced my hands against my knees and stood up, but I didn't chase after Judy. Instead, I rushed toward the wall next to the security desk, about ten feet away. There, a red button was mounted beneath a clear plastic cover, with a small label printed above it that read, "Level One Biohazard Alarm".

I flipped open the cover and slammed my palm down on the button.

A piercing alarm instantly echoed throughout the entire airport terminal. Red warning lights flashed wildly, and the noisy crowd fell silent for a few seconds before descending into even greater panic.

Dan froze in his tracks. He pulled his hand out of his bag, his fingers visibly trembling.

When Judy realized I was the one who had triggered the alarm, she charged toward me in a rage. She raised her hand and swung it straight toward my face, her palm cutting through the air with a sharp whoosh.

"There's no hurry," Heather said with a smile as she pulled her hand back, still keeping a comfortable distance between us."I came by today to drop off some freshly imported oranges. Didn't you say you've been having a poor appetite lately? These have just the right balance of sweet and tart."She turned, retrieved a fruit basket from her trunk, and handed it to me. Her fingertips lightly brushed against mine before she quickly pulled away."I should get going. Get some rest, and don't overthink things."As she turned to get into her car, I gripped the basket handle tightly and, on impulse, called out, "Heather."She turned back, a questioning look in her eyes.Taking a deep breath and meeting her gaze, I gave voice to the soft fluttering in my heart that I'd been keeping tucked away."I'm not saying no. I just… Can you give me a little time? I want to take things slow and heal."She blinked at me before a smile spread across her face. The dimples at the corners of her mouth d

Heather paused and turned back with a smile, faint dimples appearing at the corners of her lips."You're a specially appointed consultant for our Customs Department. If it weren't for you this time, the consequences would've been unimaginable. We're the ones who should be saying thank you."She paused for a second, then added, "You don't have to be so formal with me. Make yourself at home here."I watched her slender figure as she walked away. A thousand words crowded my throat, but in the end, all I managed was a quiet, "Okay."The days that followed were exceptionally peaceful. The housekeeper arrived on time every day to cook and clean, preparing all kinds of nourishing soups and dishes to help me recover.Every day, I went for walks along the path in the yard and read while soaking up the sun. My physical wounds gradually healed, and the one in my heart slowly scabbed over, too.Heather stopped by every two or three days to bring me household essentials and check on my recove

"Not okay," I answered. "Judy, can't we just part ways amicably? If you don't sign, I'll take this to court, and it won't look good for either of us."Judy stared at the utterly unmoved expression on my face, and the last trace of color drained from hers. She stumbled back half a step, bracing herself against the dining table."Have you already hooked up with Heather?" she asked, her voice hoarse. "Is that why you can't wait to divorce me? So you two can run off together?"Her absurd accusation made me burst out laughing."Even now, you still can't admit you were wrong," I said, shaking my head. "All you know to do is blame other people."I paused. Looking at her ashen face, I enunciated my next words clearly."There's nothing going on between Heather and me. I just don't want you anymore. We'll each keep what's ours. If you don't have a problem with that, go ahead and sign the papers."Judy fell silent for a long time, her fingers crumpling the edges of the divorce papers. Fina

"I want to get divorced as soon as possible. I don't want anything to do with Judy for even one more day," I said.Heather nodded, picked up her phone, and contacted a lawyer at the law firm she regularly worked with. She didn't ask a single unnecessary question the entire time, respecting my boundaries perfectly. Not long after, there was a soft knock at the door. A nurse wheeled in a meal cart, set down a bowl of warm oatmeal and a small plate of fruit, and said with a smile, "The doctor said that since you just woke up, you can only have liquids and soft foods for now. Our cafeteria made this specifically for you, so enjoy it while it's hot."After the nurse left, urgent knocking came from the door. Before we could even respond, Judy burst inside, an unmistakable mix of exhaustion and remorse written all over her face. She strode over to my bedside in a few quick steps and reached for my hand."Joel, I was wrong. I wasn't thinking straight when I said those things that day. Can

"Joel! You're bleeding a lot!" Heather exclaimed. "Your wound has completely reopened!"She took off her tactical jacket, wrapped it around me, and shifted my weight onto her shoulder."Call an ambulance! Now!" she called out, her voice anxious.Someone nearby immediately grabbed a walkie-talkie and called for help. Meanwhile, she guided me toward the exit without slowing down. Catching sight of Dan and the suitcase out of the corner of her eye, she just spat out three words."Search it carefully!"Only then did Judy seem to snap back to reality. She reflexively tried to stop us."On whose authority are you—""On the authority that he's a senior customs consultant who triggered the alarm while carrying out official duties. Does that answer your question?" Heather answered coldly without even turning around. "If you dare stand in the way again, you'll be taken into custody for obstruction of justice."Judy froze in place as she watched Heather rush me out of the terminal. Her fa

Dan's suitcase lay wide open on the polished tile floor. All anyone could see were a few ordinary changes of clothes. In one corner sat several bottles of men's cologne and skincare products, as well as a thick stack of handwritten medical notes. The crowd burst into raucous laughter at the sight."That's it? Triggering the biohazard alarm for this? The guy's a lunatic!""Talk about being dramatic! It's obviously just normal luggage, yet he insists on framing the guy.""How vicious. A pathetic excuse for a man like him belongs behind bars."Eager to put an end to the commotion so she could leave with Dan, Judy turned toward the airport security officers and yelled, "Don't listen to him. Just arrest him already.""There's something wrong with my husband here," she continued, pointing to her head as her face twisted with disgust. "Mental illness runs in the family."Her words drove into my heart like a rusty, blunt knife. When my father betrayed my mother years ago, he'd publicly
