Chapter 3

Author: September Almond
But Judy's slap never landed. It wasn't because she couldn't bring herself to hit me, but because everyone was watching. And as someone who took pride in her image as a college professor, she couldn't afford to slap someone in public.

Instead, she jabbed a finger into my chest, shoving me back with every poke.

"Do you have any idea what the penalty is for raising a false alarm? Detention! Fines! You might not care about your reputation, but I care about mine! You're just a security guard making 600 dollars a month! What right do you have to press that button? Do you even know what pressing that actually means?"

She genuinely didn't know. She never cared about my job, and she'd never asked what I actually did. Every time I came home late from working overtime, all she'd say was, "Since when does guarding doors require working overtime?"

For three years, she'd only ever seen me as a useless freeloading husband who depended on her to survive.

"Sir! Ma'am! Please step aside!"

The airport's biohazard response team came charging through a side passage in full protective gear, pushing a sealed mobile testing unit.

The security captain ran ahead of the team, his walkie-talkie crackling loudly.

"Level One alarm triggered in Zone A3. No visible leak detected at this time. Requesting backup for verification!"

Dan stood ramrod straight beside the checkpoint, his suitcase trapped on the other side of the security barrier. The panic on his face lasted less than a second before he regained his composure. He even greeted the response team with an understanding smile.

"Hello, sir. I'm a doctor with Doctors Without Borders, registered with the International Red Cross. Because of a personal relationship dispute, this gentleman not only tried to prevent me from passing through, but he also maliciously triggered the biohazard alarm."

The ground operations supervisor glanced at Dan's official-looking credentials, then turned to look at me, dressed in civilian clothes, drenched in cold sweat, and pale as a sheet.

Obviously taken in by the documents, he turned to face me with a stern expression.

"Sir, this is a restricted customs area. It's not the place for you to settle domestic disputes."

Judy turned toward the hazmat team leader and slipped effortlessly into the polished, dignified persona of a college professor.

"Officers, I'm so sorry. My husband hasn't been in a good emotional state lately. He probably only did this because we got into an argument. I apologize for the trouble. This really is just a misunderstanding."

"Is that guy fucking insane? He just decides to claim that someone is carrying biological weapons? How fucking great. Now we're all stuck here."

"I feel so bad for that doctor. He goes overseas to save lives, only to come back and deal with this crap."

"If it were me, I'd have dumped a psycho like him a hundred times over!"

"Exactly! I'd have kicked him to the curb ages ago!"

Hearing the crowd's words, my fists clenched so tightly my knuckles ached.

Meanwhile, the hazmat team was following protocol. They needed my official badge number before they could initiate a special inspection procedure, but my phone had fallen to the floor and shattered earlier when Judy shoved me.

Without my phone, I couldn't contact my superior. And without my credentials, the hazmat team wouldn't recognize my authority.

Judy stalked closer to me and said in a low voice, "If you get down on your knees right now, apologize to Dan, and admit you threw this fit just to get my attention, I might consider using my position as a professor to bail you out of the police station."

Get on my knees and apologize to Dan?

I looked at the face I'd once loved more than anything. For the first time in three years, she seemed terrifyingly unfamiliar.

"Judy Morrison," I said, my voice quiet and even. "I gave you one last chance to walk away from him."

"Are you threatening me?" She laughed, her expression dripping with utter disdain.

"It's not a threat," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "From this moment on, you'll be held legally responsible for your choices."

A flicker of impatience crossed Dan's eyes as he caught what I said. With a soft click, he unlocked the combination lock and lifted the lid, opening it for everyone to see.

"Since you're so desperate to take a look, go ahead.

"Everyone, you're all my witnesses. If he doesn't find any contraband, I want him to rot in prison!"

"There's no hurry," Heather said with a smile as she pulled her hand back, still keeping a comfortable distance between us."I came by today to drop off some freshly imported oranges. Didn't you say you've been having a poor appetite lately? These have just the right balance of sweet and tart."She turned, retrieved a fruit basket from her trunk, and handed it to me. Her fingertips lightly brushed against mine before she quickly pulled away."I should get going. Get some rest, and don't overthink things."As she turned to get into her car, I gripped the basket handle tightly and, on impulse, called out, "Heather."She turned back, a questioning look in her eyes.Taking a deep breath and meeting her gaze, I gave voice to the soft fluttering in my heart that I'd been keeping tucked away."I'm not saying no. I just… Can you give me a little time? I want to take things slow and heal."She blinked at me before a smile spread across her face. The dimples at the corners of her mouth d

Heather paused and turned back with a smile, faint dimples appearing at the corners of her lips."You're a specially appointed consultant for our Customs Department. If it weren't for you this time, the consequences would've been unimaginable. We're the ones who should be saying thank you."She paused for a second, then added, "You don't have to be so formal with me. Make yourself at home here."I watched her slender figure as she walked away. A thousand words crowded my throat, but in the end, all I managed was a quiet, "Okay."The days that followed were exceptionally peaceful. The housekeeper arrived on time every day to cook and clean, preparing all kinds of nourishing soups and dishes to help me recover.Every day, I went for walks along the path in the yard and read while soaking up the sun. My physical wounds gradually healed, and the one in my heart slowly scabbed over, too.Heather stopped by every two or three days to bring me household essentials and check on my recove

"Not okay," I answered. "Judy, can't we just part ways amicably? If you don't sign, I'll take this to court, and it won't look good for either of us."Judy stared at the utterly unmoved expression on my face, and the last trace of color drained from hers. She stumbled back half a step, bracing herself against the dining table."Have you already hooked up with Heather?" she asked, her voice hoarse. "Is that why you can't wait to divorce me? So you two can run off together?"Her absurd accusation made me burst out laughing."Even now, you still can't admit you were wrong," I said, shaking my head. "All you know to do is blame other people."I paused. Looking at her ashen face, I enunciated my next words clearly."There's nothing going on between Heather and me. I just don't want you anymore. We'll each keep what's ours. If you don't have a problem with that, go ahead and sign the papers."Judy fell silent for a long time, her fingers crumpling the edges of the divorce papers. Fina

"I want to get divorced as soon as possible. I don't want anything to do with Judy for even one more day," I said.Heather nodded, picked up her phone, and contacted a lawyer at the law firm she regularly worked with. She didn't ask a single unnecessary question the entire time, respecting my boundaries perfectly. Not long after, there was a soft knock at the door. A nurse wheeled in a meal cart, set down a bowl of warm oatmeal and a small plate of fruit, and said with a smile, "The doctor said that since you just woke up, you can only have liquids and soft foods for now. Our cafeteria made this specifically for you, so enjoy it while it's hot."After the nurse left, urgent knocking came from the door. Before we could even respond, Judy burst inside, an unmistakable mix of exhaustion and remorse written all over her face. She strode over to my bedside in a few quick steps and reached for my hand."Joel, I was wrong. I wasn't thinking straight when I said those things that day. Can

"Joel! You're bleeding a lot!" Heather exclaimed. "Your wound has completely reopened!"She took off her tactical jacket, wrapped it around me, and shifted my weight onto her shoulder."Call an ambulance! Now!" she called out, her voice anxious.Someone nearby immediately grabbed a walkie-talkie and called for help. Meanwhile, she guided me toward the exit without slowing down. Catching sight of Dan and the suitcase out of the corner of her eye, she just spat out three words."Search it carefully!"Only then did Judy seem to snap back to reality. She reflexively tried to stop us."On whose authority are you—""On the authority that he's a senior customs consultant who triggered the alarm while carrying out official duties. Does that answer your question?" Heather answered coldly without even turning around. "If you dare stand in the way again, you'll be taken into custody for obstruction of justice."Judy froze in place as she watched Heather rush me out of the terminal. Her fa

Dan's suitcase lay wide open on the polished tile floor. All anyone could see were a few ordinary changes of clothes. In one corner sat several bottles of men's cologne and skincare products, as well as a thick stack of handwritten medical notes. The crowd burst into raucous laughter at the sight."That's it? Triggering the biohazard alarm for this? The guy's a lunatic!""Talk about being dramatic! It's obviously just normal luggage, yet he insists on framing the guy.""How vicious. A pathetic excuse for a man like him belongs behind bars."Eager to put an end to the commotion so she could leave with Dan, Judy turned toward the airport security officers and yelled, "Don't listen to him. Just arrest him already.""There's something wrong with my husband here," she continued, pointing to her head as her face twisted with disgust. "Mental illness runs in the family."Her words drove into my heart like a rusty, blunt knife. When my father betrayed my mother years ago, he'd publicly
