She pushed the door open and stepped into a sleek, modern office. A middle-aged man in a crisp navy suit sat behind a large desk. He looked up with a professional smile.

“Miss Bennett?”

“Yes,” Rhea said, trying to steady her voice. “I’m here for the Junior Marketing Executive interview.”

“Please, have a seat.”

She sat down, smoothing her white pantsuit over her thighs. The man extended his hand.

“I’m Richard Harlan, Head of Human Resources.”

Rhea shook his hand and handed over her CV. He scanned it for what felt like only a few seconds before looking up again.

“Your CV is impressive,” the HR manager said. “Let’s start simple. Tell me why you applied to this company.”

Rhea straightened slightly. “Because I want to build something stable for myself. I’m hardworking, and I learn fast. I don’t run from pressure.”

A brief pause.

The HR manager studied her for a moment, then flipped through her documents.

“You’ve worked part-time roles before.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

More silence. The kind that made Rhea’s heartbeat louder than the ticking clock on the wall. She could feel the weight of the past few days pressing down on her, but she pushed it all down, focusing on the present.

Then the HR manager leaned back slightly.

“We’re impressed.”

Rhea blinked. “Sorry?”

“Well, Miss Bennett… you’ve got the job.”

Rhea blinked again, her brain struggling to process the words.

For a moment, her mind went blank.

“I’m—sorry… what?”

“You’re hired,” he repeated. “Starting salary is competitive. You’ll report directly to the Marketing Director. You can begin today, or take the rest of the day and start fresh tomorrow.”

Rhea stared at him, stunned.

Just like that?

“Tomorrow,” she said finally, her voice softer now. “I’ll start tomorrow.”

“Excellent.” He slid a folder toward her. “Welcome to Luminar Enterprises.”

She left the building in a daze, the weight of her portfolio suddenly feeling lighter. As she stepped outside into the bright afternoon sun, she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

“Just like that…” she murmured.

“Just like that.”

Her head snapped up.

“Noah!”

He was leaning against his car right in front of the building, arms crossed, wearing that familiar easy smile that always made her heart flutter.

She cried, breaking into a run.

He laughed as she crashed into him. Rhea threw her arms tightly around his neck, and he lifted her slightly off the ground, hugging her back just as fiercely.

“You came,” she whispered against his shoulder, breathing in his familiar scent.

“I promised, didn’t I?” He pulled back just enough to look at her, his hands cupping her face. “Whether you got the job or not, I was going to be here.”

She pulled back just enough to look at him. “You disappeared, Noah. Three days. No calls, no messages…”

“I lost my phone,” he said quickly, his expression softening. “I’ve been trying to sort everything out. I didn’t want you worrying.”

Something in her hesitated.

Then softened.

“You could’ve found a way.”

“I know,” he admitted quietly. “I’m sorry.”

She studied him for a second longer… then nodded.

“Okay.”

Relief flashed across his face, as he leaned in, giving her a deep peck on the lips.

“You look beautiful with the ponytail.” he murmured on her lips. "I missed you,”

“I missed you more,” Rhea whispered, smiling.

They got into his car, and Rhea couldn’t stop smiling as they drove off. Noah took her to his new apartment. As soon as they stepped inside the cozy living room, he grinned.

“Surprise. I finally moved out of my parents’ house. Been looking for all means to surprise you. We have our own space now.”

Rhea looked around, impressed and touched. “This is amazing, Noah. Since when did you start planning this?”

“A while,” he replied with a soft chuckle. “Wanted it to be perfect for us.”

Noah pulled her close and kissed her. The kiss started soft and sweet, full of relief and longing, but quickly deepened. His hands slid down to her waist, pulling her closer as his tongue brushed against hers. Rhea melted into him, her fingers gripping his shirt. For a few blissful minutes, the world disappeared — there was only the heat of his mouth, the way he tasted, and the weeks of missing him that poured out between them. When they finally pulled apart, both slightly breathless, Noah rested his forehead against hers.

“I’ve missed this,” he said. “I told my parents about you,” he added softly.

Rhea’s eyes widened as she pulled back to look at him. “You did?”

He nodded. “They want to meet you. And your family.”

“That’s… actually perfect,” Rhea said, smiling. “I told my mom about you too. She wants to meet your family as well.”

They spent the rest of the afternoon talking, laughing, and catching up, wrapped in the comfort of their new privacy. Later that evening, when Rhea finally got home, Melissa was waiting in the living room, folding laundry.

“How was your interview?” her mother asked.

Rhea forced a bright smile. “It was… good. Really good.”

“Which means you got it?” Melissa asked as Rhea nodded, smiling.

Melissa comes over to pull her into a warm hug and press a quick kiss to her forehead. “It’s been good… watching you grow like this,” she said softly.

Rhea didn’t mention Noah. Not yet.

That night, Rhea told her mother everything about Noah’s parents wanting to meet. Melissa was still unhappy her daughter had kept the secret for months, but she pushed it aside and decided to give Noah a chance.

“Fine. We’ll meet them this weekend,” Melissa said. “But I’m warning you, Rhea—if I don’t like his family, I won’t approve of this relationship.”

“Mom, please don’t ruin this for me,” Rhea pleaded, her voice soft but desperate. “I really love him. I want to build something real with him.”

Melissa sighed, looking tired. “We’ll see.”

The weekend arrived faster than Rhea expected. Work had gone surprisingly smooth these past few days— her colleagues were nice and friendly, and she had even made a new friend, Nora. Now, tonight was the day they were to visit Noah's parents. She spent extra time getting ready, choosing an elegant but modest cream dress that made her feel confident about meeting Noah’s family. Melissa wore a simple but sophisticated outfit. In the car on the way there, Rhea kept fidgeting with her hands.

Noah was Rhea’s second boyfriend, and she saw him as someone she could have a future with. Her first boyfriend had cheated on her, and it hadn’t ended well. Now, her trust in Noah had grown stronger. She didn’t deny that she had once suspected he was cheating when he didn’t reply for days, but his excuse had made her want to trust him even more.

“Mom, please be nice,” Rhea said quietly. “I really want this to work.”

Melissa glanced at her daughter. “I’ll be civil. But I won’t pretend to like them if I don’t. Do you think I should bring Alaric… I mean he’s…”

“Fuck no,” Rhea said immediately, cutting in. The mere mention of his name sent an unwanted jolt through her chest. She was finally trying to push him out of her mind, and now, every memory came flooding in.

They arrived at the beautiful family home. Noah was already waiting outside, looking nervous but happy.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he greeted Melissa respectfully, shaking her hand with a warm smile. “It’s really nice to finally meet you.”

Melissa studied him for a moment, then her expression softened slightly. “Nice to meet you too, Noah…”

Noah hugged Rhea too, whispering, “You look beautiful.”

Noah led them inside, his hand gently holding Rhea’s. Rhea was beaming, her heart full of hope and excitement as they stepped into the living room.

And then everything shattered.

Sitting on the large couch was a man Rhea had never seen before. But the way her mother froze beside her made it clear that Melissa knew him very well.

Stanley, her ex-husband. The man she had divorced when she was pregnant with Rhea because she had found out he had a four-year-old child with her best friend Serena and had been hiding it from her. Now it all made sense to her because Noah was that child Stanley and Serena had borne.

Melissa’s face drained of all color. Her body went rigid, as if she had been struck.

“No…” she whispered, voice trembling. Then louder, filled with disbelief and growing fury, “No no no. Tell me this is a joke Rhea.”

Rhea blinked in confusion, her stomach dropping. “Mom? What’s wrong?”

Melissa’s voice rose sharply, panic and rage mixing together. “Rhea, get in the car. Now.”

“Mom, what are you talking about?” Rhea asked, completely lost.

“I said get in the car!” Melissa shouted, grabbing Rhea’s arm with surprising strength. “We are leaving. Right now!”

Noah looked stunned. “Mrs. Bennett, please—”

But Melissa was already dragging Rhea toward the door, her entire body shaking with raw, uncontrollable emotion.

Rhea had no idea why her mother had suddenly lost it.

She had no idea that the man sitting on the couch was Stanley — the father she had been told was dead for twenty-three years.

And the woman beside him was Serena — Melissa’s former best friend… and Noah’s mother.

You’re not saying anything,” Melissa said, her voice laced with worry as she stood in the kitchen doorway. Rhea gripped the edge of the counter tighter. “I’m sorry, Mom. I swear I’m happy for you. I really am. I don’t want to ruin this for you. I just…” She paused, swallowing the lump in her throat. The image of Alaric’s intense eyes kept flashing in her mind like a forbidden movie she couldn’t pause. “I’ll be fine after I take a cup of water. Just give me five minutes, Mom. Please.” Melissa studied her for a long second, then sighed. “Okay. Five minutes. But don’t take too long.” She hesitated at the door, then added softly, “You’re stressing me out, Rhea. I need you to try tonight. For me.” Rhea nodded weakly. “I will.” Melissa gave her one last concerned look before heading back to the dining area. Rhea could hear her mother’s voice brighten again as she spoke to Alaric, pretending everything was normal so things wouldn’t feel awkward. Dinner passed in a painful blur. Rhea
