Chapter one_ slapped on sight

CAMILLE

The taxi pulled away before I had even finished counting the coins in my palm, and I stood there a moment too long, watching its taillights shrink down the long drive until the gate in front of me was the only thing left to look at.

It didn't look like a gate so much as a verdict. The Iron, twice my height, flanked by hedges someone was paid to keep so perfectly square they looked fake.

I'd seen the Smith name in headlines for years, new acquisitions, record profits, a wing of the children's hospital with a name tag in front but none of it had prepared me for how it felt to stand outside their actual house holding a piece of paper with my whole life folded into it.

Nanny position. Live-in preferred. Experience with children required.

I had no experience with children. I only had experience with hospitals, with insurance forms, with the particular silence that falls over a waiting room after a doctor uses the word *aggressive* to describe an illness instead of a person. I figured that counted for something,it had to.

"She's afraid," the doctor had said, the last time, though he had meant my mother and not me. "That treatment isn't optional anymore. It's a matter of when you can pay, and not if you want to."

I hadn't answered him. I had been doing the math in my head instead ,the number that always came out wrong no matter how many times I ran it, because there was no version of my bank balance that met the version of the bill.

My father used to say money wasn't everything. He said it right up until the week he decided a nurse from Sacramento was worth leaving his wife's chemotherapy for. Funny, how the people who tell you money doesn't matter are usually the ones who've never had to watch someone die without it.

I smoothed the front of my dress, which had looked fine in my bedroom mirror and now looked exactly like what it was,the only formal thing I owned, worn twice to two different funerals. Then I walked through the gate before I could think better of it.

Inside, the estate did that thing wealth does when it wants you to feel it without saying a word. Marble that caught the light and threw it back tenfold. A staircase that curved for no functional reason except that someone, at some point, had decided function wasn't the point. And people…. a dozen of them, and maybe more, all dressed like they'd been born knowing which fork to use, murmuring to each other in the low, competitive way people murmur when they're sizing up the competition.

I found a spot near the back and tried to look like I belonged there. I don't think it worked. A woman in a blazer glanced at my shoes,my flats, the good pair, the ones I'd resoled twice and looked away fast enough that I understood exactly what she thought of me.

"Bags here, please." A staff member, mid-thirties, moved down the line collecting handbags like she'd done it a thousand times and resented every one of them. I handed mine over without much thought. It had nothing in it worth stealing.

That should have mattered later but it didn't.

The interviews themselves felt less like interviews than public executions. Mrs. Smith sat at the head of a long table with the posture of someone who'd never once in her life had to ask permission for anything, and she went through candidates the way other people go through junk mail…. fast and dismissive, already thinking about the next one.

"Why would I hire someone who can't even answer a simple question without stammering?" she said to one woman, who left with her mascara halfway down her face. "Next.

I watched four people fold in front of her before it was my turn, and each time I told myself I could do better, and each time I wasn't entirely sure that was true.

By the time only five of us were left, standing outside on a stretch of manicured lawn waiting to be called for whatever came next, my hands had gone from nervous to numb. That's when I felt it,the specific, prickling awareness of being watched by someone who wasn't bothering to hide that they were doing it.

I looked up before I could stop myself.

He was on the balcony above us, one hand resting on the railing, watching the five of us the way a man might watch weather roll in, not worried, just noting it. I knew him immediately, the same way you know a celebrity's face before you can place the movie. Zack Smith. I'd read enough profiles on him to fill a shelf,self-made in the sense that only applies to men who inherit a company and then triple it, ruthless in negotiations, allegedly the reason two rival firms folded within the same year. My mother used to joke that I had a crush on a spreadsheet, because I clipped his interviews the way other people clip pop stars.

Meeting his eyes felt different than reading about him,it felt colder. I looked away first.

“Focus, Camille. You didn't come here to stare at a man on a balcony "I whispered to myself.

"Something you'd like to share with the rest of us, Camille?"

I hadn't realized Mrs. Smith had said my name until it was already too late to pretend I hadn't heard it.

"No, ma'am. Sorry." The apology came out smaller than I meant it to.

She didn't respond. She didn't need to,the look she gave me did the job for her, filing me under a category I wouldn't be climbing out of easily.

The other four candidates were doing that thing women do when they sense someone's about to go down, not quite smiling, but close enough to it that I felt my face heat up anyway.

Mrs. Smith rose from her chair the way royalty might, unhurried, and crossed the distance between us until she was close enough that I could smell her perfume, something expensive and sharp. I wanted to step back but my body wouldn't let me.

"Madam." The butler's voice cut through before she could speak, and I turned to see him hurrying toward us with my bag in one hand and a thin gold bracelet glinting in the other. "We found your jewelry. It was in this one's bag."

The words took a second too long to land.

"That's not…..i don't understand." My voice came out thinner than I wanted it to.

"Is this yours?" Mrs. Smith's eyes were already on me before the butler finished pointing.

"Yes, but I've never seen that bracelet before in my life ….."

The slap came before I finished the sentence.

It wasn't the kind of slap you see coming.

It was fast and practiced, the kind that suggested this wasn't the first time her hand had done this to someone standing exactly where I was. My head snapped sideways, my cheek lit up like a struck match, and for one long second the entire lawn went silent except for somebody's sharp intake of breath.

"You slapped me." I said it out loud mostly because I needed to hear it confirmed. It didn't feel real yet.

"I don't hire thieves," she said, like that was an answer. "Get her out of my sight."

The butler reached for my arm. I didn't fight him….there wasn't a version of this where fighting helped me but something in me had gone very still and very far away, the way it used to when my father would raise his voice at the dinner table and I'd learned it was safer to just wait it out.

"Let go of her."

I hadn't heard him come down. He was simply there, suddenly, closer than I expected, hands in his pockets like he had all the time in the world and none of the urgency the situation called for. Up close he was worse than the photographs, not because he was unattractive, the opposite, but because photographs can't capture the specific unease of being looked at by someone who clearly misses nothing.

"She's a thief, Zack. I won't have it."

"You have an accusation," he said, not raising his voice, which somehow made it worse for her than if he had. "Not evidence. There are cameras on this property for a reason. Use them before you put your hand on someone again."

I didn't know what surprised me more, that he'd said it, or that his mother, mid-sentence, actually stopped.

I stood there with my cheek still burning, waiting to find out which version of today I was going to get to keep, and somewhere underneath the fear I noted, almost against my will, the particular quality of his attention, like being catalogued rather than seen.

"Zack Carlos Smith," I sa

id, before I could stop myself, half question and half confirmation, like saying his full name out loud might explain why my pulse hadn't settled since the moment he arrived.

He didn't answer because he didn't need to.
