Chapter 2

Author: Running Water
I curled my lips in a faint, bitter smile. The whole thing felt absurd. Simon did not even bother to hear me out before rushing off to work.

Before he even arrived, he had already taken out his phone to call Charmaine Marlowe. I had seen that bright, beaming smile on his face before. When he traveled thousands of miles just to see me, when he proposed to me, and when he found out I was pregnant, he had worn that exact same smile.

I burned the forged psychiatric report, then filled out a new astronaut application and submitted it to the unit.

This time, no one was going to stop me from boarding.

When I arrived the next day, I saw all my belongings shoved into a box and dumped in the cramped shared office area outside. They had been moved out of Simon's office.

Charmaine had already moved into his office.

She was draped in Simon's jacket, eating the breakfast he had personally made, enjoying everything that had once been mine.

So this was what he meant yesterday when he said he would always protect me.

My coworker, Richard Dale, couldn't stand it and insisted on confronting Simon. "Not only did he swap partners without permission, but now he won't even let you use the office. Who does he think he is?"

I stopped Richard and smiled lightly. "Don't go. I was the one who asked to end our partnership. That office really doesn't belong to me anymore."

That included Simon himself.

That afternoon, during capsule training, I was reassigned from the advanced group to the beginner group with Charmaine.

I didn't have to guess who was behind it. I headed straight to Simon's team.

Charmaine had just finished training and could barely stay on her feet. Simon scooped her up from the capsule, carrying her gently. He patted her back anxiously and handed her a water bottle.

"This is my fault. I shouldn't have pushed you into such a difficult challenge so soon."

Charmaine wiped the sweat from her forehead and smiled gently. "It's okay. As long as I can go to space with you, I am willing to endure anything."

They chatted for a while before Simon finally noticed me.

His hand, which had been resting on her waist, jerked away as he hurried to explain, "Honey, Charmaine isn't feeling well. As the team leader, I am just concerned about her condition. Don't overthink it."

I didn't want to overthink it. When his hand left her, Charmaine looked at me with undisguised jealousy.

"I'm really sorry. Simon has always treated me like this. Please don't fight with him because of me. He is already exhausted," she said gently, though her tone carried a clear edge of provocation.

She had always been like this. Simon had just never seen through her hidden meanings.

I didn't respond. Instead, I looked straight at him.

"Why did you transfer me to another training group? You know the final astronaut selection is coming up. Are you trying to get me eliminated?"

Simon hesitated. "You've got the wrong idea. You've been under too much pressure lately. I just thought some basic training might help you unwind."

Charmaine interjected, "That's right. Simon is only thinking about you. I didn't join his team to replace you. He simply couldn't bear seeing me treated unfairly in my old group."

I smiled faintly, but my eyes welled with tears.

It usually took more than five years of basic training to qualify for the advanced group.

Simon had joined two years before me. He had seen me being bullied, mocked, and scolded harshly by instructors.

Back then, he never asked me to switch groups. He had only left me with one cold but fair remark.

"If you put everything into your training, who would dare say anything about you?"

With only a handful of criticisms from her instructor, Charmaine was immediately moved into his team, while all six years of my effort were completely disregarded.

I looked at him and asked, "Do you really think Charmaine belongs in this group? She's not ready for this. Simon, you're stripping me of everything I've worked for by transferring her here!"

I said, "I just want you to see that I am the first to fly into space. Even though you tried many times to take away what was rightfully mine, I still made it here. Simon, I want you to spend the rest of your life regretting your choice of Charmaine."With that, the countdown to the launch began. I donned my spacesuit and turned toward the spacecraft without a moment's hesitation. My team and I held each other's hands as the final five seconds of the countdown echoed sharply in my ears. The spacecraft launched. I closed my eyes and felt myself surpass the speed of light. When I opened them again, we were in orbit, and the vast expanse of the universe stretched endlessly before me. Every planet moved steadily along its path. The scale was beyond anything I could have imagined.Five days later, we returned safely to Earth. The entire country erupted in excitement, celebrating the historic success of the mission. My unit granted me a full year of leave to rest, and my superior awarded

"What puzzles me is that Charmaine's behavior never gave her away. How did you know she might target this mission?" Commander Wright asked, scrutinizing me closely.I crossed my arms. My mind was filled with memories from my previous life, of the news I had heard in the psychiatric hospital about Charmaine and Simon going to space together.I remembered it all clearly. When a manned spacecraft launched again five years later, a foreign flag appeared in orbit. That flag had never appeared before.I suspected that when Charmaine failed to sabotage the mission, she had left that mark to signal her country's presence. However, I couldn't tell Commander Wright that. Reincarnation sounded absurd, and admitting it could have sent me straight back to the psychiatric hospital.I let out a steady breath and smiled faintly. "Sir, a woman's intuition is powerful, especially when she's been betrayed."Commander Wright chuckled, seemingly satisfied with my answer. "You're boarding tomorrow. Are

Simon kept his head lowered, unable to meet my eyes. A sense of unease gnawed at him, and he shifted restlessly. "When did you find out?"I answered calmly, "A long time ago. Simon, you probably didn't notice, but whenever you lied to me, you were softer than usual. Every time you tried to console me, it was because of Charmaine."He hadn't realized it—and neither had I in my past life. I gave a faint, self-mocking smile at how blind I had been. Love and indifference were always obvious, yet I had failed to see them.I added, "Your feelings for Charmaine changed a long time ago, Simon. That's why I want a divorce."With that, I picked up the signed papers and walked away.Simon's face twisted with desperation and anger as he jumped to his feet, shouting after me, "No, that's not it! I've always felt guilty toward her because her husband died on my account! Jean, you can blame and hate me. I admit I was at fault, but Charmaine is completely innocent! For the sake of all we've share

Matthew's first reaction was to swing at me in anger. "Jean! How dare you accuse Charmaine of something like this! When Desmond died, we all saw how devastated she was. They cared for each other so much. How could she have caused her own husband's death? Desmond died in the line of duty. What does that have to do with her?"I caught his wrist and let out a sharp laugh. "This is the station, not your home. You can't just lock me up whenever you feel like it. Don't believe me? Before Desmond died, he received a classified message. You know that, right? Do you know who sent it?"I met his eyes coldly. Panic flickered across Matthew's face for a moment. His lips trembled as he muttered, "Impossible… That's absolutely impossible…"He jerked his hand free and rushed out of the station. He was most likely heading straight for the interrogation department. After I was released from prison in my previous life, I was assigned to work in the archives for a while. That was where I saw Desmond'

I was ultimately cleared of all charges. The day I left the interrogation department, Charmaine was brought in. Her eyes were red as she argued repeatedly with the officers escorting her. "Jean is slandering me! You can ask Simon. I've never tried to access any classified information! Jean, why are you doing this to me? Matthew and Simon won't let you get away with it!"I gave her a cold glance and walked out.The first thing I did when I got home was submit a divorce request to my superiors."Jean, I know this is hard for you. The fact that Simon could do something as vile as detaining you shows he's completely out of line. He doesn't seem to understand the difference between gratitude and love, but we don't yet have solid evidence that he leaked classified information. I advise you to reconsider before making a final decision," my superior said.I shook my head. "No, sir. I've thought about this for a long time. Even without this incident, Simon and I couldn't continue living

"Stop making a scene. I'm begging you," Simon pleaded, looking at me with anguish.I clenched my fists. "I'm not making a scene! Everything I'm saying is true. Simon, you and my brother have both been manipulated by her! When the higher authorities investigate, it will all come out!"My superior immediately requested intervention from the higher authorities. While we waited, someone unlocked the chain from my hands, brought me a glass of water, and tried to calm me.Simon never looked at me once. From start to finish, he stayed by Charmaine's side as she cried. When the investigators finally arrived, Simon approached me, his expression calm. "Jean, if the investigation confirms that Charmaine has done nothing wrong, you will apologize to her in front of the entire unit. You will also voluntarily give up your astronaut candidacy and never enter the unit again."The warning in his eyes was one I had seen before. If Charmaine truly came out clean, he would probably force me to abando
