"Mom, remember that guy you wanted to set me up with? I've decided to meet him."

The moment Noelle Anderson said it, she felt a weight lift off her shoulders.

Julia Badger's voice softened when she realized her daughter was finally giving up on Stephen Sedgwick.

"I'm glad you've come to your senses, Noelle. The Sedgwicks are way out of our league. Besides..."

Julia caught herself and quickly changed the subject.

"The guy I want you to meet might not be quite like Stephen, but he's handsome. I think you two would make a good match."

Noelle knew her mother was only trying to make her feel better. But after nine years of following Stephen around, she couldn't help feeling a little let down.

"Okay. One more month."

"What's happening in a month?"

Noelle scrambled to end the call before turning around. Stephen was standing in the doorway, looking amused.

"Your birthday. It's in a month," she said calmly.

Stephen scoffed. "I thought you meant you'd finally leave me alone in a month. What, pestering me didn't work, so now you're playing hard to get?"

"Mm," Noelle replied.

When they'd first met, Stephen had been happy to have Noelle around to play with. He'd even help her with her mother's chores after finishing his schoolwork each day.

But after what happened, his attitude toward her changed completely.

When he was in a good mood, he'd tease her and enjoy watching her light up, only to turn around and hurt her. When he wasn't, he wouldn't even spare her a glance.

Noelle had gotten used to it long ago.

When she didn't get flustered this time, Stephen lost interest. Before leaving, he turned back to warn her.

"Noelle, I'm going out with my friends tonight. We'll be out all night, so don't call me. And don't come looking for me."

Noelle lowered her gaze. The last time she'd insisted on tagging along to a party with Stephen, she'd seen him on the dance floor with his arms around Rachel Thayer.

The music had been deafening, leaving her dizzy as her heart ached so badly she could barely breathe.

Back in high school, Rachel had looked down on Noelle for being the housekeeper's daughter. She'd even gotten the other girls in their class to bully her.

Then Stephen transferred to their school and stood up for her, putting himself between Noelle and the girls who bullied her. He'd saved her from them.

And now, despite knowing what Rachel had put Noelle through, Stephen could still laugh and joke with Rachel as if nothing had happened.

That was the day Noelle finally realized she had to give up on Stephen. Everyone knew how she felt about him, but it was time to let go.

Stephen's expression darkened at her silence. "Did you hear me, Noelle? If you bother me tonight, you're moving out immediately."

He'd used that threat on her countless times. Whenever he threatened to kick her out, she'd tearfully give in, no matter how much she wanted to refuse.

Noelle flinched.

"Okay," she said automatically.

Noelle was being unusually obedient today. Stephen brushed it off when he remembered how she'd clung to his leg, crying and begging him not to leave.

After all, nothing scared her more than losing him.

His phone kept ringing with calls from his friends, urging him to hurry. Stephen thought nothing more of it and left, humming to himself.

The front door slammed shut, and the house fell silent again.

Noelle looked down at the stuffed rabbit in her hands. After a moment, she decided not to pack it.

Julia had forgotten to get her a present for her 18th birthday. By the time she remembered, someone had already bought the stuffed rabbit Noelle had wanted for ages.

Not wanting to make Julia feel bad, Noelle had hidden under the covers and cried.

When Stephen found out, he'd searched all over town for another one. It had already been discontinued, though, so he'd had one custom-made just for her.

"Noelle, I'll always be here for you. I won't let anyone hurt you," Stephen had promised, holding the rabbit.

When Rachel found out, she'd flown into a rage, snatched the rabbit from Noelle's hands, and torn it apart.

Noelle hadn't even cried when she'd been severely punished at school. But the sight of her ruined rabbit had made her burst into tears.

Sobbing, she'd pinned Rachel to the ground and started hitting her. When Stephen arrived, he'd pulled Noelle into his arms.

"Don't cry, Noelle. Your bunny will be good as new tomorrow."

Sure enough, the next day, the rabbit looked just like it had before.

Noelle had been so happy she'd jumped up and down. Stephen watched her smiling and couldn't resist pinching her chubby cheek.

His hand was covered in tiny punctures and bandages. His touch stung a little, but to Noelle, nothing had ever felt gentler.

All that tenderness came to an end the day Stephen's father died.

While Stephen lay unconscious, his company was actually doing better than before, thanks to Daniel's help. After the crash, Noelle sought out the officer handling the case. The information she provided gave the police a new lead.As the police dug deeper into the crash, they uncovered several old cases. Eventually, they traced the crash back to Rachel's parents, Roger Thayer and Linda Carter.Even as they were arrested, Roger and Linda glared at Noelle and shouted, "We should've made sure Stephen died in that crash! He betrayed Rachel! He deserved to die!"At their trial, Roger and Linda were in tears as they blamed Stephen for everything."If he hadn't toyed with Rachel's feelings and driven her to hire a killer, why would people our age go after a young man like him?""We're parents, Your Honor. We only did it because we love our daughter. Please have mercy on us!"But their tears weren't enough to sway the court. Both Roger and Linda were soon sentenced to prison. The office

Rachel's sentencing should have been a relief, but Noelle's heart raced with worry."Please be careful, Stephen. I'm worried the Thayers might come after you for this."Stephen brushed off her concern and replied casually, "They won't. They're too busy cleaning up Rachel's mess to worry about me. Anyway, I've gotta go. I'm driving. I'll bring you something good to eat later."After hanging up, Noelle tried to tell herself she was worrying over nothing.Just then, a nurse came in to say it was time for Miranda's tests. Noelle struggled to lift Miranda into a wheelchair, then wheeled her out of the room. There were so many people waiting for tests that Noelle spent ages in line. By the time she got back to Miranda's room, Stephen still hadn't shown up.Worried again, she called him, but a woman answered instead."Hello, this is Mavrelle Hospital. He's been in a serious car accident. He was unconscious when he was brought in."The phone slipped from Noelle's hand and hit the floor

Stephen's first words after waking left Noelle baffled. She gave his chest a light thump."You scared me to death! What happened? You have to tell me everything!""Alright. Let me explain."Stephen had suspected something wasn't right about Julia's death. He'd gone to the hospital to check the security footage, only to learn that someone had overwritten the data on the hard drive. Recovering the footage would take time. He'd also noticed a man in a cap and face mask who kept appearing near Noelle. When he dug deeper, he discovered the man had ties to Rachel. Before going home, Stephen had arranged for someone to protect Noelle. But he hadn't expected Miranda to keep him confined to his room, leaving him no choice but to send Rachel to see Noelle. When he'd finished explaining, Stephen looked at Noelle with pride. "Remember our first fight, Noelle? I kept my promise."Sunlight streamed through the window, highlighting Stephen's strong features and catching in his hair. He looked

"Do you promise to be faithful to him, respect him, and never deceive him for as long as you both shall live?"The officiant had barely finished speaking when Rachel gazed at Stephen's handsome face, tears streaming down her cheeks."I do!" she shouted. The next moment, Stephen snatched the microphone. "Rachel, can you honestly say you've never lied to me?"The room erupted in shocked chatter. No one had ever seen a groom humiliate his own bride like this.Rachel stepped forward and grabbed his arm in a panic. "Stephen, stop it. We can… we can talk about this when we get back."But Stephen stepped back and pulled his arm free. "I gave you a chance. You got that guy to corner me in an alley so you could swoop in and save me, didn't you?"The large screen showing their wedding photos suddenly went black. Then a recording began to play."Hello? I've got a proposition for you.""One million dollars. Not a penny less!""Deal. I'll give you two million dollars. I want Noelle Anders

Noelle stared at the ivory wedding invitation, trying to steady her trembling fingers.Rachel saw how shaken Noelle was and gave a soft, mocking laugh."I warned you, but you wouldn't listen. Did you really think families like ours would ever accept someone like you? All these years, and you're still as dumb as a rock!"Noelle took the invitation. There it was in black print. Stephen was the groom, and Rachel was the bride.Tears blurred her vision as she checked the groom's name again and again. Flecks of gold foil clung to her fingers, but the black letters still spelled Stephen.Rachel watched with undisguised satisfaction, enjoying every moment of Noelle's misery. She gave a scornful laugh."If Stephen hadn't insisted you come to our wedding, I'd have missed seeing you like this. I have to admit, it feels pretty good."Rachel hurried into a black sedan. Moments later, the car disappeared down the alley. It felt as though something had been ripped out of Noelle, leaving her

Noelle hadn't heard from Stephen the night before. When she showed up to meet Daniel with dark circles under her eyes, he did a double take."Noelle, what'd you do last night, rob a bank?"She rubbed her bleary eyes. "I didn't sleep very well. What did you want to see me about?"Daniel's tone turned unusually serious. "My dad's sending me overseas for work. I came to say goodbye, and I wanted to ask if you'd come with me."Noelle had finally sorted out her feelings, and she wanted to be honest with him."Have a safe trip, Daniel. I hope you'll be happy."Daniel smiled, looking relieved. "I knew I'd regret it if I didn't ask. Now I can finally let it go."With things suddenly awkward between them, Daniel laughed loudly to cover his embarrassment."Noelle, come take a walk around our old school with me. Consider it my going-away present.""Okay."The campus looked different now. Several new classroom buildings had gone up, the teachers' offices everyone used to dread were in a
