Chapter 7

Author: Perfect Timing
Yasmine felt like she had been thrown into ice-cold water. She froze.

Times had changed. Things were more open now than before, but if one was accused of colluding with foreign forces, interrogation was unavoidable.

Leo knew what happened to the people under questioning. He had told her all about their misery.

Yet for Yara and Noah’s sake, he was handing her over himself.

Guards pushed her forward. Before she was taken away, Leo leaned in close.

“You think faking a letter to study abroad just to play your little game with me would make me send Yara and Noah away? Take this as a lesson. Stop your scheming.”

If he had only looked at her face, he would have seen the last flicker of hope for him die in her eyes.

But he did not look at her.

He had abandoned her many times before. Why would this time be any different?

Yasmine did not fight back. She could not take it anymore.

They locked her in a pitch-black interrogation room. The cold air raised goosebumps across her skin.

The one in charge was Leo’s own subordinate.

His eyes were filled with disdain. He cracked a whip in his hand and brought it down hard.

Snap! Snap!

The whip, soaked in saltwater, carved bloody welts into her skin.

Yasmine screamed and spat out through gritted teeth, “Is this your idea of interrogation? This is nothing but torture!”

Her cries only fueled him. He struck harder.

“Our commander sacrificed his legs for this country, while you colluded with foreign powers! You shame him!

“He told me to make sure you learned your lesson. Whatever happens, he’ll take responsibility. Now, tell me. What was in that letter?”

Did he love Yara and Noah that much?

Leo loved them so much that he was willing to see her beaten like this!

She shook from the pain. She was about to speak, but the man sneered.

“Forget it! You’ll only deny it. Keep beating her! Don’t stop until she breaks.”

Two men dragged her away.

The nightmare lasted four days.

Her body was covered in whip marks, and her fingers were bruised from being crushed repeatedly.

Each time she passed out, a bucket of salt water brought her back.

There was not an inch left on her body that was not in pain.

She thought she really might die here.

Then, the door opened. Yara walked in as she pushed Leo’s wheelchair forward.

Leo looked down at the tied-up Yasmine. For a moment, pity flashed in his eyes.

“Yasmine, it’s been four days. Do you admit your mistake?

“Yara is generous. She’s willing to let go of how you treated her and Noah. If you just apologize, I’ll take you back home.”

Her heart had long turned to stone, yet his words still made her laugh bitterly.

“Fine! I’m sorry.

“I’m sorry for resenting Yara and Noah. I’m sorry for getting in the way of your love for them. I’m sorry for showing up at the Quinton house and disturbing your happy little family. Is that enough?”

Leo saw her teary eyes, and anxiety stirred in his chest.

“Yasmine, that’s not what I meant.

“There’s nothing between me and Yara. I swore to my brother I’d take care of her and Noah. You know that. Why can’t you understand?”

Yara stepped in to add fuel to the fire.

“Yasmine still misunderstands us, Leo. Maybe Noah and I shouldn’t be around you anymore.”

Leo shook his head without hesitation.

“No. Not again. Yara, I don’t want to hear that again. If you leave with Noah, how can I face my brother?”

He turned back to Yasmine, and disappointment burned in his eyes.

“Yasmine, you’re being childish! Stay here and reflect.”

He wheeled away in anger.

Yara did not follow.

She stopped in front of Yasmine, lifted her chin with a finger, and smiled airily.

“See? I put in the slightest effort, and Leo won’t listen to you.”

She then placed a hand on her stomach. Her expression was smug and taunting.

“You haven’t heard yet, have you? I’m carrying Leo’s child.”

Noah read the letter Yara had left him.[It’s all Leo’s fault. He lied to me. He was supposed to take care of us for life!]His breath caught in his throat, and he rushed to Leo’s place. It was a place he had avoided for years. The grounds were already crowded with people. He saw Yara pinned to the ground. She was wild-eyed as she yelled, “It’s him! He’s the shameless one! Why’s he only blaming me? “He was the one who wanted to deceive Yasmine. So, why was I the one who was kicked out? Why didn’t he take care of me and Noah? “My baby! Give me back my baby!”A few paces away lay a bloodstained knife and Leo, who was covered in blood.Noah was terrified, yet he forced himself to inch closer. His uncle, who had once seemed as powerful as his father, had gray hair and had withered to skin and bones.Leo was barely alive. When he saw Noah, tears streamed down his face. “Noah, this is what I deserve. I deceived her for more than fifty years! I owe her my life. “The Quinton fa

After that, Yasmine took Quill’s arm and did not spare Leo even a glance. Leo had disappeared from her life completely. Quill never hindered Yasmine’s career. He stood right by her side. Two years later, Yasmine had a daughter. Quill immediately announced that he was quitting his job to stay home to take care of the family. People claimed that Yasmine was blessed to find such a good husband. Quill said, “I’m the lucky one. Winning Yasmine’s love is my greatest blessing. I don’t ever want someone else to take her away.”Yasmine smiled in joy.Later, she took her daughter back to her hometown to see Emma. One day, while out shopping, a dirty little beggar handed her a flower. Yasmine thought he looked familiar. She was about to ask who he was, but he ran off. That boy was N

“Please… please forgive me.” Leo’s voice was low and desperate. In the crowd, whispers arose. “Look at him, a man kneeling like that! He must really feel guilty.” “He looks familiar. Isn’t he the commander who got injured on duty a few years back? Commander Quinton? Girl, maybe think it over. He’s a war hero.” “Yeah, he just lost his way for a while.”Hearing the voices lean in his favor, hope flickered in Leo’s heart. He carefully pulled a small box from his coat and held it out to Yasmine like an offering. There was a flawless jade bracelet inside. One look at the quality and anyone could tell it was not a common jewelry. With his meager pension after being discharged, he must have saved for years to afford something like that.“Yasmine, I broke your bracelet back then. Please, take this as a token of my apology.”He left out the fact that the broken bracelet had been her late mother’s keepsake. To the bystanders, it only made him look more sincere.“Take it, girl

Leo had no answer to Yasmine’s harsh words. No one knew better than he did how terribly wrong he had been.He had betrayed her and left the woman who had loved him broken and scarred. Even if Yara had conspired, it was still his own weakness that had let everything happen. But letting her go was something he could not do.Leo said stubbornly, “I know you’re still angry with me. Yasmine, let’s start over. Give me a chance to win you back!”He was too afraid to hear her refusal, so he left as soon as he said his piece.Yasmine watched his hurry out and disappear. She was speechless and frustrated. She had not told him that she was already married.‘Win me back?’ The thought itself was laughable. She did not give it another moment of thought. Anyway, in a few days, her husband would come to take her home. She had not expected that Leo would find out where she lived. Every day, he showed up outside with a bouquet of roses. When people asked what he was doing, he said he was

Emma heard his voice, and her face darkened.“What are you doing here? You’re not welcome here!”She moved to shut the door to try to stop Leo from coming in.Leo’s gaze was fixed on Yasmine, and his eyes were filled with desperate hope.He wanted her to come back to him. He wanted her to say that she had missed him too.But the woman he longed for did not spare him a single glance.“Ms. Larson, don’t waste your energy on someone who doesn’t matter.” Yasmine smiled softly. With Leo’s wounded eyes on her, she closed the door as if he had not been there at all.Emma’s face softened, and she looked at Yasmine in approval.“So, you truly don’t care about him anymore?”Yasmine nodded. Strong feelings like love or hate would only wear a person down. Leo was not worth her emotions.Emma looked pleased. The student she had raised had finally grown so mature. After the birthday celebration, Yasmine got ready to leave. When she opened the door, she saw that Leo was still the
