Chapter 6

Zoey was not discharged from the hospital until the next day, so Julian asked Ruby to take Zara home and show her around.

Zara kept a cold look on her face and did not say a word the entire way.

Ruby was the one who finally broke the silence.

“Zara, please don’t blame me. I’m Julian’s secretary, so I have to do what he tells me. I knew about Julian and Zoey from the very beginning, but I couldn’t tell you. If I had, I would’ve lost my job.”

Zara still did not say anything. They were no longer her friends, so there was nothing left to say to each other.

The car finally stopped in front of a mansion that Zara had never been to before.

The first thing she saw when she got out was a yard full of hydrangeas. They were her favorite flowers.

She walked inside and saw that every detail in the living room looked exactly like what she had once imagined.

Even the paintings on the walls were ones she had mentioned to Julian before.

“Julian actually planned to give this mansion to you, but he suddenly fell in love with Zoey…” Ruby said.

Zara nodded. “Where’s my room?”

“Upstairs. I’ll show you.”

As they passed the master bedroom, Zara immediately noticed the lace canopy over the bed. It looked like something a princess would have.

She had mentioned that to Julian too. He remembered every single thing she had ever wanted, yet he had given all of it to another woman.

It would be a lie to say that it did not hurt. But there was nothing she could do about it anymore.

Ruby took her to the guest room and gave her a few instructions before she left.

“Zara, I don’t know what to say, but I still think of you as my best friend. I have some things to take care of. If there’s anything you don’t understand, you can ask me anytime. My phone…”

“Here.”

Zara handed her the phone. Ruby took it and realized that Zara must have read everything in their group chat.

She did not say anything and turned around and left.

That night, Zara tossed and turned and could not fall asleep.

At 5 a.m., Ruby called her.

“Zara, Zoey will be discharged at seven this morning. Make sure breakfast is ready before she gets home.

“She likes oatmeal with fruit, so make her a bowl of that. She also likes scrambled eggs and toast. You can make some fresh fruit or yogurt too. Just make sure everything is light and easy to eat.”

Before she hung up, Ruby added, “Oh, and Zoey loves peanut butter. Put some in her oatmeal. Just add a little. Don’t put in too much.”

Peanut butter in oatmeal?

What kind of strange food preference was that?

Zara did not give it much thought. She got up, went downstairs, and started making the oatmeal.

The oatmeal was almost done. Zara had just finished preparing the rest of the food when Julian came home with Zoey.

“Careful. Take your time.”

“I’m fine. I’m not that fragile.” Zoey stuck out her tongue playfully. “Wow, that smells so good. Did Zara make breakfast?”

She handed the baby to one of the servants and hurried into the kitchen.

“Zara, Ms. Johnson told me you were a great cook, but I had no idea you were this good. You used to take care of my husband like this too, didn’t you?

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of your husband from now on. You won’t have to worry about him anymore.”

With that, she sat down and started eating her oatmeal.

Julian glanced at Zara, who stood nearby, and felt a little guilty.

She had not looked at him even once since he came home. She must still be angry.

Zoey’s demands really were a little much. Maybe he should find a new nanny soon.

Julian was lost in his thoughts when Zoey suddenly fell out of her chair.

“I feel awful! Honey, I think I’m having an allergic reaction. Get my allergy medicine! I feel sick!”

Julian turned around and saw red rashes all over Zoey’s body. She was scratching at her skin frantically. She scratched so hard that it left marks.
