Chapter 4

Author: Ribeat
Evelina was on her knees among the bodies, cradling Alaric and using her own body to shield him from an arrow.

Four of her nine tails had been severed, and her core had shattered.

"Prince Alaric, please wake up." She shook Alaric by the shoulders, her voice hoarse. "The reinforcements are here. Please, wake up!"

Alaric stirred in her arms.

Evelina trembled with relief. Even the blood covering her face couldn't hide her joy.

"Your Highness, you're finally awake! I knew you'd be alright!"

Alaric opened his eyes. He glanced at her, then quickly turned away. His gaze fell on me. I was sitting on my horse a short distance away.

"Your Highness," he said.

Evelina's smile froze for a moment.

"Your…" She followed Alaric's gaze and turned to look at me. "Your Highness, you're here."

I swung down from my horse and walked over.

Blood still seeped from the arrow wound in Evelina's shoulder, and the wounds where her tails had been severed were deep enough to expose bone.

I reached out to help her up, but she shrank away without thinking.

"Save Prince Alaric first." She didn't look at me. "I'm fine."

"Get the royal physician," I commanded, keeping my voice calm. I withdrew my hand. "Treat Alaric first, then examine her."

When the royal physician pulled the arrow from Evelina's shoulder, she bit through her lip but didn't make a sound.

She kept her eyes fixed on Alaric's tent.

The comments kept appearing before my eyes even after she lost consciousness.

[Evelina is still the best! She risked her life to save Alaric. Her core shattered, four of her nine tails were severed, and she lost all her powers!]

[What about Prince Cassian? Did he just stand there and watch?]

[He came to save them, didn't he? What more do you want? Are you all idiots?]

[He showed up but didn't help. They still had to rely on Evelina!]

Alaric finally woke up the next day. He sat propped up in bed, pale but clear-eyed.

He seemed like a different man.

Evelina sat beside the bed, her forehead pressed against Alaric's hand. Her shoulders shook as she cried.

"Prince Alaric, you're awake. You're finally awake!"

Alaric glanced down at her. His expression was distant, almost disgusted. He pulled his hand from hers.

"Ms. Wrenwood," he said evenly. "Please leave."

She looked up at him, tears still on her cheeks. There was confusion in her eyes. "Your Highness?"

"I already have a wife and have never intended to take a mistress. A man and a woman shouldn't be alone together in a room."

Alaric turned away. "Someone escort Ms. Wrenwood back to her tent."

Evelina stared at him in shock. "Your Highness, I…"

Alaric cut her off, his tone hardening. "Get her out."

Two guards half-carried, half-supported her out of the tent. As Evelina passed me, she glanced at me.

Her eyes were full of confusion and hurt, as if she wanted me to speak up for her.

Of course, I said nothing.

If Alaric had no feelings for her, no one could force him to love her. It had all been one-sided on her part.

After she left, only Alaric and I remained in the tent.

"Your Highness, I need to speak with you," Alaric said.

I sat beside his bed.

"That Foxkin…" he said bluntly.

"She shouldn't be allowed to stay in the palace any longer. She's lost her powers and is no different from an ordinary fox. It isn't proper for her to remain in the palace.

"Besides, she's stubborn and reckless. She charged into battle alone this time. Though she saved me, her actions also cost me 3000 soldiers.

"Your Highness, please send her out of the palace and back to Moonveil."

I looked into Alaric's eyes. They were full of weariness.

"You weren't like this before," I said.

Alaric had never been warm toward Evelina, but he had never been this harsh, either.

He knew how well I treated her, so he was always willing to accommodate her for my sake. He never slighted her or interfered with her freedom to come and go.

"That was then." Alaric turned away. "All you need to know is that I'm doing this for your own good, Your Highness."

"She owes you far more than this," he added, almost as if speaking to himself.

After that, Alaric refused to see Evelina.

After we returned to the capital, Evelina went to Alaric's manor many times to see him, but she was turned away every time.

One day, Alaric rode out through the front gate.

Evelina stumbled toward him and cried, "Why are you treating me this way? What have I done wrong?"

Alaric continued, "Evelina accused you of conspiring with the enemy and plotting treason. Every piece of evidence was flawlessly forged, and you had never seen any of it."Father ordered you to take your own life."He looked at me, his eyes full of tears."In my past life, I ruled as king for ten years after you died. Those were ten long years. Every day, I read reports and met with ministers."Each day, I went to the royal mausoleum and spoke to you. Rosaline's coffin stood beside yours."Whenever I visited, I'd tell her to wait a little longer. Soon, I would be joining you both."For ten years, I never had a peaceful night's sleep. Do you know how quiet it was in the royal mausoleum? Or how much I missed you both?"At last, I understood. My voice trembled when I finally spoke. "So that was why you'd acted this way ever since you woke up in this life.""My only wish after being reborn was to get Evelina away from you." Alaric spoke calmly."In the first few days after I re

"I took advantage of the situation?" Cordelia stood up. "Ms. Wrenwood, why don't you ask yourself why you gave someone else the chance?"Her voice turned icy. "Every time you take Prince Alaric's side, ask Prince Cassian for favors on his behalf, or take Cassian's gifts and give them to Alaric, you show Cassian that he doesn't matter to you."Now that someone else is treating Cassian like he's important, and suddenly you can't stand it.""You don't love Prince Cassian," Cordelia continued. "You just love knowing there will always be someone waiting for you."After that day, Evelina kept quiet for a long time and stopped causing trouble.I thought she had finally come to her senses, but I never expected her to be planning something much worse.A month before the wedding, Cordelia was poisoned. My manor was placed under lockdown.Evelina was the first suspect. When she was brought before me, she didn't cry. She simply looked up at me from the floor with a strange calm in her ey

I gave a small smile. "See? You can't even bring yourself to lie to me.""No, that's not it." Evelina shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Your Highness, I just didn't know…""You knew," I said, cutting her off. "You always knew. You just never thought I'd marry someone else."Evelina stood frozen."Everything I gave you, you passed on to someone else. I don't blame you, because that was your choice," I said. Then I added, "But now I've stopped giving, so don't blame me. It's my own choice."Evelina's tears streamed down her face, but she still said nothing. She didn't ask me to stay or try to explain herself. She never said the words I had once dreamed of hearing, either.Evelina only cried and asked, "Your Highness, are you giving up on me, too?""You abandoned His Highness first, Ms. Wrenwood." Cordelia's voice came from behind me. "You can't expect someone you left behind to wait for you forever."Evelina jerked her head up and looked past me at Cordelia. In th

"I carved it myself, and I didn't hire anyone to do it. Pretty impressive, right?" Cordelia said."I can tell," I replied. She glared at me. "If you think it's ugly, give it back."I slipped the dagger into my sleeve. "You can't take back a gift once you've given it."Cordelia huffed, but a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.-Late that fall, my cough returned. The royal physician said it was an old ailment.Somehow, Cordelia heard about it and showed up before dawn with a bowl of dark, thick paste."My mother taught me this old remedy. It works much better than anything the royal physician prescribes," she said.I stared at the questionable-looking concoction. "How much honey did you put in this?""Not much. Just under half a jar.""Half a jar?"She showed me how much she had used. I fell silent, then took a sip from the bowl.It nearly killed me."Use less next time," I said."There'll be a next time?" Cordelia's eyes lit up. "Does that mean I can come visit you

Alaric reined in his horse and stared down at her. "Whose Foxkin are you?"Evelina stared at him in surprise. "Prince Cassian's.""So you do know." Alaric's voice was icy. "You were sent to Prince Cassian, yet you come to my home every day. "You pass on the gifts he gives you to me. Every kindness he shows you, you use to win my favor instead."Do you think you're worthy?""Your Highness, that's not it! I just…""You've never had any regard for His Highness." Alaric leaned down, his words sharp and clear. "I never thought you were good enough for me, and I never will. Prince Cassian may let you get away with anything, but I won't show you any mercy."He straightened and snapped the reins. His horse splashed through a muddy patch, soaking Evelina in dirty water. That evening, she stood stubbornly outside my manor, demanding to see me.
