“It looks like your crush got himself in trouble,” John said, a knowing smirk tugging at his lips. He was right. I had no idea how he always knew when I was crushing on someone, but he was annoyingly good at it. My stomach twisted. How did he always see right through me? I hadn’t even realized I was staring until John pointed it out. The new guy sat in Jason’s usual seat like he owned it, completely unaware of the storm heading his way. I pushed back from the table, the plastic chair scraping loudly against the tiled floor, and hurried across the crowded cafeteria. I was only a few steps away when I froze Jason and his entourage had already walked in. “No, no, no. This is not good.” In seconds, they surrounded the stranger like sharks circling blood in the water. Jason clamped a hand on the new guy’s shoulder, leaning in to whisper something. Whatever it was, it made his crew smirk with cruel amusement, their eyes gleaming. Heart hammering, I forced myself forward “Perhaps you can sit over there instead,” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. I pointed to the empty chair I had just left. The stranger looked up. For a brief second, our eyes met,his gaze sharp, intense, and strangely calm. He stood without a word and followed me. “Get the fuck out of here,” Jason snarled, loud enough for half the cafeteria to hear. “Go on. Follow the fat bitch. That’s the only kind of company your kind deserves.” The words sliced into me like claws, but I kept my chin up and pretended not to hear. Jason was an arrogant prick who thrived on breaking people down. He threw his weight around because his father was the richest man in the pack and the Beta to the Alpha. That kind of power made him untouchable. “You can have my seat,” I told the stranger softly, gesturing toward it. My cheeks still burned from Jason’s insult, but I pushed the pain aside. “Never mind him. That’s just how Jason is. Stay out of his way and you’ll be fine. I promise.” “Jason… so his name is Jason,” the stranger murmured. His voice was low and smooth, like velvet sliding over gravel. It sent an unexpected flutter through my chest, warm and electric. “I’m Roxellena Charming. You can call me Rox,” I said, offering a small smile. He didn’t smile back, but something in his expression softened. I watched as he tore a sticky note from a small pad, scribbled “Jason” on it with quick, precise strokes, and tucked it into his pocket. “These are my friends,” I continued. “This is Jessica.” “Hi!” Jess waved, her bright smile cutting through the tension like sunshine. “John and James.” “What’s up, man? Welcome to Prestige College,” John said, clapping the stranger on the back. “A place where you meet the good, the bad, and the…” He never finished. The new guy suddenly stood, his movements fluid and decisive, and began walking away without another word. “Hey! You never told us your name!” I called after him. No reply. My stomach sank as I realized why he’d spotted Jason and his gang cutting through the crowd straight toward us. “Where did he go? Where the hell is he?” Jason snarled, his voice dripping with menace. His crew closed in, forming a tight circle around my friends and me. “I can see the tub of lard found a boyfriend,” Jason sneered. He lowered his head until his breath ghosted hot against my ear. My friends went deathly quiet. No one dared speak. James and John, the guys I’d always counted on to have my back, stood frozen like statues, eyes fixed on the floor. Shame burned in my throat. “Where did you hide him?” Jason circled us slowly, his footsteps deliberate. “Under the table?” He crouched dramatically and peered beneath. “Or inside your stomach?” His gang erupted in loud, mocking laughter. I felt something cold and a sticky splash over my head. Strawberry juice trickled down my hair, my face, soaking into my shirt in slow, humiliating rivulets., Jason had emptied the rest of his strawberry juice on me. “What do you gain from all this, Jason?” Jessica asked. Her voice was firm, but I caught the tremor beneath it. I reached out quickly, squeezing her arm in warning, but it was too late. Jason stalked toward her, eyes narrowed. “And what about y…”He couldn’t finish his sentence before the emergency alarm suddenly blared through the cafeteria, loud enough to nearly burst our eardrums. Chairs scraped back. Students panicked. Jason, my friends, and I all scrambled toward the exit doors in a chaotic rushAlpha Adrian’s POVA small, sharp smile tugged at my lips as the rough rope bit into my wrists. It faded the moment I realized Juana’s hands remained free. Then Linus stepped out from the circle of angry Kaza men. He walked straight to Juana and kissed her.She kissed him back.Something cold and heavy settled in my chest. I had trusted her. Fought for her. Risked everything for her. And she had handed us over with a smile.“Send them to the most secure cell,” Linus ordered one of his men. Then he took Juana’s hand and walked away without looking back.***The lift doors opened with a low groan. Guards shoved us forward into a corridor that felt wrong the moment the air hit my skin.It was freezing. Not the natural cold of stone or night. This was deliberate, mechanical, unnatural. My breath fogged in front of my face. The metal walls radiated a deep, steady chill that sank into bone.A massive machine hummed somewhere nearby, pumping the cold through the entire level. That was why t
Alpha Adrian POVJuana and I pushed through the trampoline market at a near run. The air stank of sweat, cheap oil, and fried dough. Vendors shouted over one another while the crowd pressed in from every side. Myla stayed tight on our heels, scanning the shadows between the stalls.Behind us the Kaza gang’s voices rose like a pack of dogs. “Come out, Adrian! We know you’re here!”Someone had sold me out. Whoever that bastard was, I would find him and make him regret it.“Not now. Not here,” Juana hissed, her fingers locking around my wrist the second I shifted toward the noise.“Damn it…they’ve spotted us!” Myla’s voice cracked as beams of torchlight cut across the path. The lights swung wildly, then snapped off. A woman’s scream tore through the sudden dark…high, desperate, cut short by the sound of a struggle.Something in my chest went cold and sharp. “They don’t get to touch another woman. Not while I’m breathing.”I ripped free of Juana’s grip and sprinted toward the sound.
Roxellena’s POV“Why is mine always different?”The words came out thin. Tears sat hot at the edges of my eyes and refused to fall.I picked the paper up again. The ink had already smudged where my thumb kept worrying the corner.West Side Open Market.Even the name felt wrong in my mouth. Worst Side. That was how it sounded every time I read it.Most of the other trainees had been posted inside Iron Pack land—known streets, known rules, known teeth. Mine sat outside every border. No pack. No protection. Just a market that used to belong to other beings, until the werewolves came and pushed them out. John had said it like history. It felt like a sentence.Footsteps stopped outside. The door swung open.Jess.She had been watching me since yesterday, ever since I showed her the paper. Concern sat plain on her face now.“How are you preparing for the long journey?”“I counted what’s left.” I tipped the little pouch so she could hear how little it was. “Fifty cents. It won’t last.”She h
Roxellena’s POVTraining had changed since Adrian left. What used to be disciplined practice had turned into a quiet competition between pack members, and the cause of it all was Jack.Alpha Paulo should have taken charge in Adrian’s absence. Instead, Jack had simply stepped into the role as if it had always belonged to him.“Psychology,” he said, standing in front of the gathered trainees. His voice was calm, almost bored. “Not everything is won through force or rank. Some things are taken with the mind.”His gaze drifted across the group and landed on Jess, who had just arrived. Her eyes were swollen, the skin around them raw. She still hadn’t recovered from losing Myra and her mate. The grief sat heavily on her, and everyone could see it.“You’re late,” Jack said.Jess froze as dozens of eyes turned toward her. She opened her mouth, then closed it again.Jack waited, letting the silence stretch until it became uncomfortable. “She can’t even answer,” he remarked, almost thoughtfull
Alpha Adrian’s POVI found myself on a narrow path choked by towering trees. The air smelled of damp earth and rotting leaves. Behind one of the thick trunks, dried leaves rustled.“Show yourself,” I ordered.Myla stepped out, chest heaving. Dirt streaked her face and her clothes were torn at the sleeve. She ran straight into me, arms locking around my waist as if she might fall if she let go.“He rescued me,” she whispered against my chest before pulling back.“Who?”“One of the old men.”“It wasn’t an old man. It was Juana in a disguise.”Myla’s eyes widened. “Really? That explains the voice.”“She told me to wait here. Said she’d come back in a few minutes.”“She told me the same.”We moved to the nearest tree and sat on a thick, exposed root. The bark dug into the backs of my thighs. Around us the forest stayed unnaturally quiet no birds, only the occasional creak of branches high above.Myla sat close enough that I could feel the fine tremor still running through her. I kept m
Alpha’s Adrian POVThe heavy beat of drums pulsed through the air, low and relentless, vibrating in my bones. I was no longer in the temple. Instead, I found myself lying on a cold stone table in a dim chamber thick with strange smells…bitter herbs, burning oils, and something metallic that clung to the back of my throat. Shelves lined the walls, crowded with bottles of dark liquids and dried plants I couldn’t name.A woman entered. Her clothing was little more than thin fabric wrapped tightly around her body, leaving most of her skin bare. Without a word, she began rubbing a thick brown paste across my chest and arms. The mixture was warm and gritty, and every stroke of her hands made my skin crawl.“What are you doing?” My voice came out rough. It was the first time either of us had spoken since she brought me here. She didn’t look up. “Sacrificial spices. After your devil of a father had Kara and her mate burned, people said her bird escaped the fire. Now the pack wants its due.
