The air in the chamber was warm and thick with silence. The firelight danced along the stone walls, casting flickers of gold and red onto the heavy drapes. Outside, the winter pressed against the windows like a sleeping beast, but inside, it felt like time had stopped.

Alexandro lay beside her, the sheets twisted around their bare limbs, his chest rising and falling in a slow, even rhythm after their intense lovemaking. His arm curled protectively around Serena, holding her close as if she might vanish from his embrace if he let go. His thumb moved gently over her shoulder, brushing her skin with unconscious affection.

He turned his head slightly to look at her.

She was beautiful—exquisite in the soft light. Her dark lashes fanned over flushed cheeks, her lips swollen from the kisses they had shared, her expression tired yet peaceful.

And still, she was his now.

Finally.

He leaned forward and pressed a soft kiss to her cheek.

“You okay?” he asked, his voice a murmur near her ear.

The carriage rolled slowly along the forest path, creaking as it made its way through the snow-laced pines. The sky above was silver, stretched thin with clouds. Serena sat close to the window, her eyes distant, fingers pressed against the glass as she watched the world blur by.Alexandro sat across from her, silent but watchful. His arms were crossed, but his gaze hadn’t left her in a while. There was something in the air between them—charged, expectant, but brittle. After a long pause, Serena broke the silence.“What’s really going on between you and my father?”Alexandro didn’t move at first. Then, slowly, he met her eyes. “I told you. He didn’t want to give you to me. He thought I was a monster who would hurt his precious daughter.”Serena frowned. “My father wouldn’t have said that without a strong reason.”“There is a reason,” Alexandro said, his voice heavier now. “I suspect your father is still loyal to Valerian.”Her eyes widened. “What?”“He migrated here a long time ago, bu

The night was unusually still—so quiet that even the faintest sounds seemed amplified. Somewhere beyond the frosted windows, a cricket began to chirp, its call loud and insistent, almost unnaturally so. The sound pierced through Serena’s dreams like a thread yanking her back into wakefulness. Her eyes fluttered open.Everything looked... off.The chamber, dimly lit by the fading embers of the hearth, shimmered strangely. The colors bled together, glowed—reds glowing like molten lava, blues shimmering like ice under sunlight. It wasn’t just the room—her entire vision pulsed with rainbow hues, flickering as if someone had turned a kaleidoscope in front of her face.“What…?” she whispered to herself, blinking rapidly. Her breath quickened. She sat up and pressed her palms to her face, then glanced down at her hands.A gasp escaped her lips. Her fingernails—normally short and rounded—had elongated. Sharpened. They glimmered under the moonlight, like the talons of something not quite human

The wind howled gently outside the thick stone walls of the fortress, brushing the old windowpanes with the icy breath of the night. Candles burned low in the corners, their flames flickering like uncertain thoughts, casting golden shadows across the lavish chamber.Nivera stood by the mirror, adjusting the silk strap of her silvery satin gown. It draped over her like moonlight, clinging to her curves and falling softly around her bare feet. Her braid, usually so neat and meticulous, was arranged in a loose bun, tendrils of silvery-gold hair cascading over her shoulder. Her reflection stared back at her—nervous, beautiful, uncertain. She’d never waited like this before.Never wanted like this before. But tonight, she was sure of one thing—she couldn’t hold back any longer. She had to know if he was hers. If she meant anything to him beyond silence and protection. The door creaked open, pulling her out of her thoughts.Valerian entered slowly, wearing a heavy coat dusted with snow. His

The warmth of the bath clung to Serena’s skin as she stepped out hastily, wrapping herself in the nearest robe. Her breath came in soft, uneven waves, not from exertion, but from something more powerful—confusion, anticipation, fear, and longing, all braided into one.She couldn’t do it. Not like this. Not in a bath filled with steam and stolen glances. She needed clarity, a firm ground beneath her feet—not the slipperiness of mist and emotion. As she turned to leave, Alexandro reached out instinctively, his hand catching her wrist.“Don’t go,” he murmured.“Not here,” she replied, her voice soft but firm. There was no anger in it—just quiet insistence. And he understood. He let go.Serena stepped into their chamber, the fire burning low but steady in the hearth. Her hands trembled slightly as she dressed. The cotton slipped over her skin, cool and grounding. She tied the waist of her dress, her mind racing with questions that had haunted her for weeks. What am I to him? Why does he p

The evening air was bone-deep cold, blanketing the fort in thick silence, save for the distant howling of wind sweeping across the mountain ridges. Snow draped the rooftops like a silvery veil, sparkling under the last gold tinge of twilight. The sky had just surrendered to nightfall, revealing a spread of stars that shimmered like crushed crystal over the distant black canopy.Nivera’s boots left soft, delicate prints along the stone pathways as she wandered the outer grounds of the fortress. Her long fur cloak dragged behind her lightly, gathering flecks of frost. She walked alone, as she often did in the hours just before night fully claimed the land. These solitary walks had become her escape—a fragile ritual where she could pretend, for just a little while, that she wasn’t a prisoner of her own identity. She tilted her chin to the sky, letting the cold kiss her skin as she gazed upward. The stars reminded her of her childhood. Distant. Untouchable. Beautiful. She barely remembere
