Scarlett:

My body ached letting me know that I was alive.

Alexei’s scent filled my nostrils and the familiar smell of the bedroom made my wolf relax despite the pain that we were in.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I tried to force myself to control my muscles, and that started with trying to move my eyelids, wanting to regain my self control.

My mother’s voice filled my head as I tried opening them, remembering the number of times I would fall sick after being poisoned as a child, sleeping for days when they refused to take me to a hospital, wanting my immune system to resist. The number of times they have forced me to take scorpion stings or snake bites, not giving me an antidote, watching as my body suffered for a few days before I would get up, and each time they repeated the process, I took less time to heal, until eventually, these poisons didn’t affect me anymore.
