LOGINEMILY'S POV
“You're kidding right? That's not happening Emily.”. Rudy was still against the idea of us fake dating for the public eye.
I didn't see the problem, it would be fake afterall. He was getting worked up over nothing.
“Don't be a pain. It's going to be fine”
“No it won't.”
“You're overthinking this, Rudy”. I rolled my eyes.
“I'm not overthinking anything. Why don't you find someone else? Why me?”. He said annoyingly.
“I'd rather this arrangement be between someone that I know and not a complete stranger. That way I'd be assured that everything runs smoothly. Besides, what's the big deal? It's just for public appearances. We hold hands, hug occasionally and that's it.”
I really couldn't understand why he was hesitant about this. Rudy was always so supportive of my plans and decisions. Then again this did involve us acting like a couple.
He shook his head and rubbed his temples with his fingers.
I walked closer to him and held his hands.
“Rudy, this is very important to me. I need to save my family's name for humiliation. Please it'll only be for a while. And if you want we could make contracts and-”
“Fine, fine. I'll do it. We're getting lawyers, setting boundaries and all that and it'll be on paper”. He said in a defeated tone.
I knew how to get what I wanted from Rudy. Ever since we were kids I always had a way to persuade him to do my bidding. Then again that skill worked with everybody.
I smiled visibly satisfied with his response.
“Good. I'll call my lawyers and they'll draft a contract as soon as possible.”
“Alright then. I'll be on my way. I have some pressing matters to attend to. Just let me know when the documents are ready.”. Rudy said and left immediately.
For the first time in days I felt at peace a little. This new alliance would stabilize my position as Alpha of the Cortez pack.
A part of me still wanted to know why Ricardo would do such a thing and in the eyes of the public for that matter. And the Press Conference?
Then something registered in me.
His grandparents were the ones calling the shots. Of course. I wasn't even angry about that. I was angry that Ricardo still allowed them to control him. Even after all these years.
I remembered how they practically governed his life. Growing up my parents did patrol me, especially my mother. And after my father died she just got worse. But she was nothing compared to Ricardo's grandparents.
I thought he would eventually grow a backbone but these series of events just proved that he would never grow out of their shadow.
Pathetic.
Soon me and Rudy's lawyers got the necessary documents ready and we were officially a “fake” couple.
My plan was coming together. I took Rudy's initial suggestion and planned a charity gala for the newest children's hospital. I invited all the elites including the Marino's.
I wanted to show the public that I wasn't affected by Ricardo's decision, even though deep down my mind was constantly plagued with it.
“Are you sure about this?”. My mother asked as we drew out plans for the gala. I was sending out invitations while she contacted the interior designers for the hall.
To be honest this was a way to redeem ourselves from the last event we held. The one that Ricardo decided to pull that move.
I wanted to pull all the stops to make it the most exquisite charity gala of the year. I was determined to make the public see that Emily Cortex was fit for the role of Alpha of the Cortez pack.
“Yes mother I'm sure. Think of it as a redemption plan”
She heaved a heavy sigh.
“Your father would've brought down the Marino's if he was still alive to witness this. Maybe we've become too soft”
“We haven't become too soft mother. The public has just become too sensitive. Everything is a scandal these days. We have to be careful not to step on the wrong foot.”
“Oh my darling. People are to be careful not to step on our foot. We are the Cortez pack. The definition of power.” I rolled my eyes at her words.
Yes, the Cortez pack was truly powerful. But when my father was alive we were more feared and revered than how we were now. I doubt the Marino's would have had the balls to pull this stunt at that time. They wouldn't have dared.
But now everything had changed. I still wondered what life would've been like if he was still alive, if that sickness didn't take him away from us.
I heaved a deep sigh.
I wanted this charity gala to go smoothly as planned, no hiccups. Although I was afraid that Ricardo's grandparents would make him pull another stunt. He had been quiet though, he hadn't reached out or said a word to me and neither did I. That didn't mean he couldn't take me by surprise.
That was his grandparents' forte.
My phone lit up and there was a text from Rudy. He informed me that the news of the charity gala has spread across the news. Certainly due to his maneuvering no doubt.
He was taking care of things for me behind the scenes. He said he always worked better when not in the public eye. Probably why he didn't want to take the offer I proposed.
A small smile spread across my face, I started to feel satisfied with the outcome. And now the real task had come.
Proving to the public,
That we were in love.
EMILY'S POVThe bedroom was warm, candlelight flickering across the walls.Ralph had drawn a bath earlier, rose petals floated on the surface, steam rising in soft curls. He had poured wine, set out fruit and dimmed the lights until the room glowed amber and goldI stood in the doorway, watching him move around the room, and felt something loosen in my chest. A tension I hadn't realized I was carrying. A weight I hadn't named."You planned all this?" I asked. He turned, that slow smile spreading across his face. The candlelight caught the gold flecks in his grey eyes and made them shimmer."I wanted tonight to be perfect." He crossed to me, took my hand, raised it to his lips. "You deserve perfection."His mouth brushed my knuckles, with a soft lingering kiss.It was such a small thing, just a kiss on the hand. But the way he looked at me while he did it made my knees weak."Ralph...""Shh." He pulled me closer, his hands sliding up my arms, over my shoulders, to the tie of my robe. "L
EMILY'S POVThe great hall was packed. Every elder, every council member, every pack leader of standing had been summoned. I stood at the entrance, Ralph's hand warm holding mine, looking out at the sea of faces turned toward us.I squeezed his fingers. "I'm nervous."He squeezed back. "Don't be, I'm right here." I smiled up at him, he was so steady and so sure, exactly everything I needed him to be.The whispers started as we walked toward the front. I heard fragments, words caught in the current of murmurs."...It's time to invoke the clause...""...she is unstable...""...she should step aside..." My steps faltered. Ralph's arm slid around my waist, pulling me closer."Look at me." He murmured. "Just don't stop looking at me."I did as he instructed. His grey eyes were soft, warm, full of something that made my chest ache. "I love you my princess." He said. "And that is what matters, nothing else matters."“I love you too…my love.” I purred and kissed him on the lips…in front of ev
EMILY'S POVThe council chamber was colder than usual. I sat at the head of the long oak table, my hands wrapped around a cup of tea I hadn't touched. The elders filed in slowly, their voices low, their eyes avoiding mine. Ralph sat beside me, his hand on my knee, warm and steady.I hadn't wanted him here, but he insisted. "I'm here for support." He said.I didn't have the strength to argue, so I let him do as he wished.Elder Moretti cleared his throat. "The first item on the agenda is the allocation of summit resources. The treasury committee has requested a review of the Cortez pack's contribution."I set down my cup. "The contribution was finalized last month. Three million euros for security, two million for hospitality, one million for incidentals."Moretti nodded slowly. "Yes, Alpha. However, the committee has noted that the hospitality budget has increased by forty percent since the original proposal. They're questioning whether the additional funds are necessary."I stared at
EMILY'S POVThe next morning, the whispers were louder. I walked through the halls toward the council chamber, and they followed me like shadows, low voices that fell silent when I approached, eyes that slid away when I turned."..it should have happened by now…""..it's been months without news…""....if she can't provide an heir, what good is she…."I stopped walking and looked around, the hallway was empty, those voices where were they from? The voices had been in my head? I held my head and squatted down feeling terrified and absolutely empty."Alpha?" Marco appeared beside me. "Are you alright?" He asked with concern evident in his eyes."I'm fine Marco." I took his stretched hand, he drew me up, and we started walking again. "The summit briefing is at nine?""Yes. But Alpha..." He hesitated. "The elders are having a private meeting."My stomach dropped, with both rage, fury and fear. "They are meeting about what?"He didn't answer, he just stared at the ground silently. I looked
EMILY'S POVThe hallway stretched before me, long and endless, lined with portraits of Cortez ancestors who had ruled before me. I felt like their eyes were following and judging me as I walked.I kept my head high, my steps steady and my hands still, but I still heard them. Whispers trailed behind me like smoke, curling around the corners, seeping through the cracks of the grand estate. The walls had ears, and the ears had mouths, and the mouths would not stop talking.“She should focus on producing an heir.” The words drifted from the sitting room as I passed. Elder Selena's voice was low but clear.“Stability comes through legacy,” another voice added, it was Elder Moretti. “A strong husband should lead during pregnancy, It's only natural.”“Of course.” Selena agreed. “The Othon line is powerful, an heir would solidify everything. The alliance, the future and even her place.”The word her place made me stop walking. I pressed my hands flat against the cold stone wall. My heart poun
EMILY'S POVThe council chamber felt smaller than usual. I sat at the head of the table, Ralph beside me, his hand resting lightly on my knee. The elders surrounded us, their faces old and serious, their eyes weighing every breath I took.Elder Moretti cleared his throat. "Alpha, there is something we must discuss."I kept my face calm. "Speak." I ordered coldly. He slid a document across the table, it was old paper with an official seal and the Cortez crest pressed into wax. "A clause in our pack laws." He said. "One that has existed for centuries it’s rarely invoked, but present."I looked at the document but didn't touch it. "What clause?"Elder Selena spoke, her voice softer than Moretti's. "It's a protection, Emily. For the Alpha and for the pack.""A protection." I repeated."If an Alpha shows signs of instability……fatigue, confusion, emotional volatility…..power may be temporarily delegated to their bonded mate." She paused. "Until clarity returns."The words hung in the air li

Emily's POVThe rain fell heavily against the bulletproof glass of the town car as though it was mourning elder Jacobs on my behalf. Marco drove to a hidden, private clinic in a quiet quarter of Milan.Elder Jacobs lay on a steel table in a chilled room. He looked peaceful, like he was asleep. But
