MasukDamon's POV
“Told ya!” I gloated at Dathan as we renetered the Wolf's forge, a part of the palace designated for sword fighting. “The poor thing is so very lifeless,” Dathan said, his head bowed low. “You show too much concern. She literally just spoke to you!” I replied to him. “You need to see how she swiveled and crashed after mom hit her.” Dathan added, his voice was rising, which meant he was getting angry. I chuckled and pulled my sword out of its sheath where it hung on a rack. “You should learn to never get too close to these girls.” “Why? Because mom said so?” Dathan asked, glaring at me. “Uhm. Yeah.” I replied, and smiled very exaggeratedly. “That's not reason enough. Half the time, she's wrong bout stuff and so are you.” He replied, looking away. “You'll learn.” I said, concluding our discussion. “And what if I don't?” Dathan asked. “Would you kill me like you killed Maya?” “I'm gonna overlook the fact that you just made the most stupid of accusations.” I replied to him. “Worse than what you said is that you think I'd have anything to do with these lowlife girls.” I added. “That's the thing, I don't ‘think’, I KNOW!” My younger brother replied, slamming his fist into the manikins that hung from the roof. “And what exactly do you know?” I asked, looking at him. “I know that you liked Maya, even though she was older than you. I know you told mom about it, and she let you have her behind everyone. You'd sneak out of our room every night, at exactly two am. You'd put a hand over my face to make sure I was asleep, and sneak out!” He kept talking. “Shut up!!” I screamed him down. “Shut your mouth.” Dathan had begun to say too damn much. “Is that too much for you to hear? What you yourself did?” He asked, smiling and rubbing it in. “It's not. It's just untrue.” I replied to him, and turned my back, signifying the end of the conversation. “You can't even face me.” Dathan laughed. “I wonder how you look at yourself. I'd wake up depressed every morning.” “Mind what you say.” I warned him before exiting the forge. Silly boy! “Damon!” My mother summoned me right outside the forge. It was prohibited for women to be seen in there, and so it kinda became our sacred male sanctuary, even though my mom broke the rules a few times, cause she's a female Alpha. “Yes mother.” I answered, and tucked my hand behind me. “I was in the forge with Dathan.” “I know that.” She replied, icyly. “Have you seen Vynara?” “Yes.” I replied, against my better reasoning. “Uhm, no. I haven't. Who is she?” I asked her. I couldn't let her know that I was downstairs. “The new maid.” She replied. “The one you kept company while I was away.” “I'm sorry, mother.” I replied. The game was up. “I do not appreciate you seeing my guests before me.” My mother roared. She was just like a coconut. Tough and woody on the outside, but sweet and flavourful within. “It will never happen again.” I assured her, apologetically. “I promise.” “I know that.” She replied with the same tone. “That's why you're going to be in charge of the servants quarters for tonight.” “I haven't my wolf yet, mother!” I screamed. “I know.” She said, smiling. “That's why you're to be there.” At age twenty-two, I was years overdue for my first shift which was supposed to be my coronation as Alpha. My father, Damon III passed only two full moons after Dathan was born, leaving my mother to groom us into leaders. “I'm sorry mother.” I apologised profusely, “I can accept anything, literally anything, but that.” The servants quarters is literally what it's named. But it's also a house to men and women who spend their lives tending to the menial jobs in the palace. It was a team of about three hundred men, women and children. Almost often that not, a rebellion was cooking. They were fond of planning and staging attacks on the palace in a bid to usurp the throne. Rumor had it some of them posed Alpha blood, but came in as slaves, and were forced to remain one. “Maybe this fear will excite your wolf, and make it want to hasten up. Your father was a strong man, a resilient, ferocious wolf! You shall not be a weakling!” She commanded strongly and turned her back. End of the conversation. It was still about eight hours to midnight, eight hours to gather my strength and courage. We had guards for the jobs my mom made Dathan and I do when we erred, but no one was gonna teach her how to raise her sons, and she made that clear to everyone. Guarding the servants quarters meant no one was escaping, the men and women all slept in their different rooms, as the palace could no longer accommodate babies of the servants. And that they rose as early as the moon set to begin their day. I swallowed hard, and went up two floors to my room. Being an Alpha was no child's play. Being an alpha with a delayed wolf was even worse. I shed hot scalding tears, praying to my dead father to watch over me. It could very easily be the night I die. “I'm sorry.” Dathan said as he entered the room. “I didn't mean to put you in trouble.” For someone who was just two years younger than I am, Dathan looked a lot less daring than I was when I was his age. At twenty, he still did not know much about how many things ran in the Pack Palace. “It's alright.” I said, brushing him off. We fought often, but I never wanted to give him the impression that I was weak. I'm his big, bad, scary elder brother, and I always wanted him to think of me as that, so no one dared mess with him.. “I'm also sorry about…” He started. Dathan really had no heart for confrontations. “Maya was my fault.” I cut in. “I loved her. We started to see during the day, mom once caught us and punished the hell out of us. After doing that five times to no success, she finally turned a blind eye. Until Maya got pregnant.” Words began to taste bitter to me. So bitter I didn't want to say anything anymore. “What happened?” My overly curious younger brother asked. “She got pregnant.” I replied. “That's a good thing, yeah?” Dathan asked, smiling unsure. “Not if you're way past the age for a first shift and still haven't experienced one. Worse still if you're supposed to be the Alpha of a pack that controls the oil sector of this economy.” I smiled sadly. “What then happened?” Dathan asked. “I think I should sleep.” I replied to him. “I've got a busy night tonight.”Damon's POV “Wait.” I stopped her against my better judgement. “I wasn't supposed to be here today.” I said. “I thought so too.” Emily replied, her voice was soft and carried suspense. “I'm sorry things are not the way they're supposed to be.” “It's not your fault. Never was.” I said. “Damon, can we get the day off? Together?” She asked, sounding unusual. “I'm not sure I know what that means, but you can take the day off if you want to.” I said. “Forget I asked.” She bowed and left. Why was she acting so strange? Emily would never let me get the last word. Not even a few minutes ago. I just watched her walk off. We avoided each other for the better part of the day. I'd packed my things to leave many times more than I could count, but I ended up thinking myself into sitting back. I couldn't even make an appearance at the celebratory lunch they had on my behalf and on my bill. Once, I thought I heard footsteps, but it was so light I convinced myself it was probably
Lucas’ POV If only Adrian would be gracious enough to pick his damn call. The day was already half gone but I was too scared to request to see Rayvn and the kids. I'd thought Adrian would have a change of mind and come or something, but thirty minutes of pacing restlessly proved he wasn't. “Can I see the morgue now?” I asked the lady I met at the desk earlier. “I'm extremely sorry for your loss, Sir.” She started. “Can I have their names?” She asked. “Marcus Rayvn, and twin infants, they were unnamed to the best of my knowledge.” I explained to her. “And you say this happened yesterday?” She confirmed after minutes of endless scrolling? “That was when we got the call.” I answered. “We normally wouldn't disclose that information over the phone.” She narrowed her eyes. “Are you sure the call was from this hospital?” I requested. “Yes.” I replied. “Can I see the caller details?” She asked. “I wasn't the one who got the call. Wasn't me who chec
Adrian's POV “It's a new day indeed.” I said to myself, pulling up to the house. Maybe it was a dumb decision, seeing as many people had the right to be on my neck, literally. “Your mother is up.” One of my attendants spoke in my ear. “All the better, then.” That was meant to be sarcastic, but he didn't seem at ease. “What's up?” j looked at him, forcing him to look down at Damon's car keys which he'd taken from me. “She has a visitor.” He added. “I don't think Ma would mind my intrusion. Besides, I've got to shower me’self.” I patted his back. He was quiet, once again the young innocent boy I employed a couple of months ago. “On second thought, I shall love to see her before going up.” I watched as his face crumpled and relaxed He was hiding something, and it better be for my sake. “Wait here.” I said to him two doors away from Mama. I knocked once and let myself in. “What the fuck?!” I yelled. The sight wasn't unusual, the time of day was. Ever since
Emily's POV “If you guys can keep it low, I promise I won't interfere.” I said upon barging into Damon's office.. Luacas and Damon had each other headlocked, spinning like little kids. “Get out of here.” Lucas yelled, trying to protect me. “I'm bothered by the noise.” I stood at the door, arms akimbo, watching how blood spotted tiny dots on Damon’s cloth. “Leave!” He yelled again. Damon took advantage of the split second Lucas looked up at me to strike him on the head. I was incensed, but not mad enough to want to fight. One minute I was kissing my teeth at how stupid they both looked, fighting in an office on Damon's first day back after an unannounced leave, and the next I was knocked to a corner by a blow to my head. “See what you've done!” Lucas angrily pushed Damon to the window, and was about to throw him down the entire thirteen stories of Nevada when I rushed to him. “Lucas please go to the hospital.” I begged him as he let himself be torn off Damon by me
Damon's POV “Just go on with what you have to say.” Lucas snapped. “You don't tell me what to do!” I yelled at the top of my voice. All three of them didn't even break a sweat “Your most diligent employees are on their way to work. I'm sure you must have something planned for them.” Adrian spoke. “First on my list,” I started finally, still recovering from my outburst, “How has security been? Any threats from the borders?” I asked Lucas. “None. My guys have been less busy for a while now. I was almost thinking of downsizing capacity. It seems we do not have as much threat to require such a large army.” Lucas replied. “That sounds good. I hope you are still engaging with all your intel's though. Remember these bastards live to strike when we're the most vulnerable. It's a pleasant surprise that nothing happened when I was gone.” I tapped my fingers on the table, thinking. “Maybe that's because you had the good sense not to make my absence public.” I said, thanking him
Damon's POV “I never saw that coming.” I held my head as my nerves shot up. Adrian's problem had never been my problem, not since when we were kids. But I can't deny feeling an extreme sense of duty to him, especially as he saved me from death's lair. “I'm gonna need details.” I said. “If you're asking for a reason. I don't have any. I just did it. That bitch has had too much control over my life for a very long time. I got tired of it. I badly wanted a test, but the idea of having my first heir mothered by her didn't sit well with me.” I confessed. “When she needed you the most.” I soliloquised. “Come on. If you heard both sides, you'd feel for me too. She's the reason I lost Emily.” He said. “That's just foolish talk right now.” I brushed it off. “If she wanted to be kept, she would've. I was married to the woman.” “Back to the case at hand…” Adrian drew me out. “What exactly are you scared of about Lilian? From where I stand, she's a bastard.” I flipped.
Emily's POV “I've made plans for Rayvn and the babies.” I informed Lucas even though I didn't want to before. “Negels claim it's too risky to move them, but she's to decide when she wakes up.” “That's why I love you.” Lucas said, melting. “Put yourself together, young man. We're going to s
Lucas’ POV “I'll drive.” took the keys from Emily and she knew better than to negotiate it with me. There were a thousand stuff running through my head and the only way to get it out was to drive. Heaven knows I'd go mad in that passenger princess's seat watching someone drive me so slow.
Lucas’ POV “It's been over three hours.” I shook Emily up. “What's the time?” She asked sleepily. “It's eleven am.” I answered. It was a good idea to sleep the drugs out of my system, what she didn't know is that I can't sleep out the amount I'd dosed on. While she shuffled between consci
Emily's POV I stayed still till I was sure that I had no company anymore. Matter of fact, I watched by my window as Vera and her hooded man made it out. Another thing I took note of was that the security guy was quite familiar with him. It was one of two things. Either he worked in Nevada, or
