Emily's POV
“Farm!” The Task Giver’s ugly voice rang. It's like the seventh time he'd decided another girl's fate. And Zyna wasn't just some girl. She was my friend, at least we were quite close in the Groomers school. It's just a posh name for a place they schooled orphans. I heard my heart thud in my ears. I kept praying and hoping that mine would turn out differently. I quite enjoyed sciences, I can't be doomed to a life on the Crestview farm. “This one,” He looked up at me from behind his huge mahogany desk. The man opened his teeth to reveal a very scary set with prolonged canines. I shivered, hoping in vain that they would not smell my fear. But the laughter that they burst into confirmed it. I was so scared, I almost pissed my pants. “What's your name?” He asked me. “Emily.” I replied, looking away. “What's your wolf name?” He asked, getting pissed. I adjusted my stance and said the name I'd carefully kept a secret for as long as I discovered it on my necklace, the one thing I have from my mom who's image gets more blurry as the day goes by. “Vynara, Vynara Baron.” I said, managing to get the words out before I choked on them. “Baron?” Task Giver asked, looking up. I knew I had something like an oath with bad luck, but I honestly didn't think it was this bad. Why is he paying special attention to me?! I kept asking myself, While he looked me up and down like a strange specie, I let my eyes wander his office. It was a very big room in the school. The biggest, even larger than our induction hall. The only ceremony that was ever held was the one the little orphans had when they were scouted from all around Crestview. It's a big city with three major wolf packs, equally strong and unable to take out each other, and so they all lived in faux unity. “Is she mute?” He asked, glaring at me. “No sir.” I replied quickly. “She's a dreamer.” A man who stood right next to him said. “The Mistress says so.” He added I shot him a nasty look, which earned a feral assault on my cheeks. I gasped in shock and pain, but held my tears back. The Task Giver sucked his teeth, while indecently looking me up and down. “How old are you?” He asked. “Old enough to see my mark.” I replied to him. “I'm assuming you have?” He asked, looking strangely at me. But it was forgivable, I did give a strange answer. “No.” I replied to him, smiling. It was no longer a thing of sadness being a wolf without a wolf mark. I hadn't had my first shift yet, but I knew to expect it in the next three years, and I had a very big hunch that I'd have a big, bad, beautiful wolf. “We'll send this one to the Damon palace.” The Task Givers smiled very sinisterly. “Why?” The man who had the most annoying input I'd ever heard earlier, asked him. “She is just what they deserve.” He said. “And I hear they are in need of a new maid.” “What happened to the old one?” I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me. “She died.” He smiled again. And against what he'd have imagined, I smiled back. They weren't gonna see my fears. I was roughed out of his presence, and a bag was thrown over my face. I felt myself being led, we met a couple of people, after a brief, hushed conversation, I was finally in the car, and not one like the ones I'd been in, it was quite spacious, and smelled like Cedar wood, luxury! It was a long ride away. If I was really going to Alpha Damon's palace, then… I didn't know what to expect! The only company I had asides orphans, were those who loathed orphans. I sat still, with a breathable bag still over my head, praying the journey ends soon. “Leave her in the shed.” An icy, but classy woman's voice broke into my thoughts. Was I just in a car with Luna Damon?! I almost freaked out, but it'd have been far more spectacular if I had seen her. After hours, I mean, I literally slept and woke up, I was ushered into the living room. It was by far the grandest place I'd seen. The guards who brought me in immediately returned to their posts at the giant door that let sunlight in. “Is this the girl?” A male voice asked. I was told to bow my head anytime I entered any Alphas palace, I knew to do that. But I badly wanted to see to whom the voice belonged. We had very few males in the home. “I don't know.” Another replied, but this one was beautiful. Like the fool I was, I raised my head up and looked in the direction the voice came from. It was supposed to be a quick glance, but the chiselled faces I saw ran through my daydream for the next few hours. I hadn't seen men so beautiful. They looked a lot alike, but one looked older and taller. “You can talk.” The shorter one said, “Our mother is not gonna be down in a while.” He added. He smiled so wide, and kept eye contact with me. The other looked quite uninterested, his eyes rested on everything but me. “I'm Emily.” I said. “Emily?” He asked, looking confused. “I'd rather bear Emily.” I replied to him. I tried to talk some sense to myself and look back down, keep my hands firmly tucked behind me and wait for the female Alpha, but it looked like I was in for a beautiful conversation. “Why?” He asked again. “Dathan, I think we should go.” The other brother said. I couldn't blame him. An acne ridden stranger who was to become a maid in their palace held not so much fancy. “I think we've got a couple more minutes.” The brother replied to him. The one whose name is Dathan. “Damon, come on!” He said, calling after his brother who'd begun to ascend the gold rimmed steps they descended earlier. I watched their conversation so intently, maybe too intently, I didn't hear the footsteps behind me. “Stupid girl!” I felt a thud on my head, a warm liquid trickled down my face, and that was all I remembered of that afternoon.Damon's POV “Told ya!” I gloated at Dathan as we renetered the Wolf's forge, a part of the palace designated for sword fighting. “The poor thing is so very lifeless,” Dathan said, his head bowed low. “You show too much concern. She literally just spoke to you!” I replied to him. “You need to see how she swiveled and crashed after mom hit her.” Dathan added, his voice was rising, which meant he was getting angry. I chuckled and pulled my sword out of its sheath where it hung on a rack. “You should learn to never get too close to these girls.” “Why? Because mom said so?” Dathan asked, glaring at me. “Uhm. Yeah.” I replied, and smiled very exaggeratedly. “That's not reason enough. Half the time, she's wrong bout stuff and so are you.” He replied, looking away. “You'll learn.” I said, concluding our discussion. “And what if I don't?” Dathan asked. “Would you kill me like you killed Maya?” “I'm gonna overlook the fact that you just made the most stupid of acc
Emily's POV “Follow Nala.” The female Alpha, wife to Alpha Damon III said, after addressing me for what seemed like an eternity. I'd read about her so much and studied the history of the Damon palace so badly, I feel I knew it even more than their children. “Thank you, Alpha.” I bowed and turned to take my leave. “I'm Luna.” She corrected me. “Thank you, Luna.” I corrected myself. We were taught back at the orphanage school that she was a nice person, but just an hour in her company, and I felt so less of a human than anyone has ever made me feel. “Take her away, Nala.” She said to the middle aged lady she'd summoned earlier, from what assumed to be the palace kitchen. “One more thing!” She said, and Nala and I stopped in our tracks. “Yes, Luna.” Nala said, turning right back to face her, and then bowed her head. The dexterity is nothing short of wealth and accumulation of experience. I did the exact same and almost sprained my ankle. “You're to serve under Nala.
Damon's POV “Are you awake?” Dathan and I shared a room, even though there were hundreds of them in the palace. “Yes.” He replied in the darkness. “I can't imagine mom is making you do this. She likes you too much to send you down there.” “She's also a little too disciplined. Even for her own good.” I replied to him. “That's too true.” Dathan said. “You know, I once told Adrian that I wished she would just remarry, maybe have a life with someone else, other than just the two of us.” “Why would you say such a thing?” I asked him. “Well, Adrian's mom is married. And she's slept with almost every respectable man, father inclusive.” Dathan had no filters, and said things as they came “That's enough!” I said. “Mom would do what is best for herself.” “But she's too busy organising and arranging things sometimes, she forgets she is human and needs love too.” Dathan replied to me, headstrong. “Well, she's half wolf.” I chirped, strapped my sword on, and put out my b
Emily's POV “Leave us!” Luna commanded, as soon as I opened my eyes. “We'll be back in a minute.” A kind nurse said, as she touched my forehead. The white room, with white gleaming ceiling sharply contrasted Luna's black clothes. A sharp pain severed through my head, as I was greeted by the heavy lights. “How are you now?” Luna asked me.I wasn't used to such care. “Better.” I replied to her. “What day is it?” “You lie!” She said, putting a hand on my forehead. “Rest, you don't have to sit up.” She said, discouraging me from getting up like I'd started to do. I heard a sound, not from either of us, so I sat up curious to see where it was coming from. “The nurse says you shouldn't. You have wires connected in and out.” With her long nails, she made a display that showed how messy I looked. “What happened?” I asked her. “That's the same question I was about to ask you.” She said, looking straight into my eyes. “I can't remember much.” I croaked. “Well,
Damon's POV “It worked!” My mom squealed in delight as soon as I opened my eyes. My head hurt so bad, and so did my body. It felt like I was in boiling water. The last time I opened my eyes, it was to a team of doctors and nurses, this time, it was just the nurses. More strange is the fact that I wasn't stretched out on a bed like I was before, I was in a pool of water. “What is going on, Mother?” I croaked. “You're alive.” She said, her eyes glistening with tears. “You made it, my love.” She added. Everyone else was crying, but they didn't look as happy as she did. “Why is everyone crying?” I asked her again. “You have to rest, Damon.” My mother replied, hushing me. “You do not have the strength for this.” “I feel better.” I replied to her. “Stronger too.” Even though my voice which was coarse and rough didn't back my narrative, I really did feel better. “That's great.” Mother said. “We'll have you transferred upstairs as soon as the doctor confirms you are s
Damon's POV “Please, please just wake up.” I begged her, even though I knew she couldn't hear me. “I need you to pull through. I don't even know you. You aren't permitted to save my life at the expense of yours.” I said. I carried her in my hand and ran upstairs to our room. On my way up, I brushed past my mother unapologetically. “Damon!” She screamed after me, and for the first time in a while, she ran. My mother ran up after me, prompting me to quicken my pace. We soon arrived on the fourth floor, where Dathan and I shared a bedroom. I opened the door as fast as I could, and locked it behind me. “Damon!” Dathan screamed and rushed to meet me. It looked like the sun had begun to set, from the warm and dim sunlight that filtered in. “Who is this?” He asked me. “Vynara.” I replied to him. “Emily?” He asked for confirmation. “Yes.” I replied to him. “What happened?” Dathan asked me. His eyes darted frantically between Emily and me. “What happened, Damon?”
Emily's POV “Water.” I croaked, even before opening my eyes. “Did you hear that?” One hushed voice said. I heard footsteps running to the bed I was stretched out on. It didn't feel like the hospital bed, in the ward part of the palace. It felt big, plush, and spacious. “Emily?” Two worried voices, with creased faces bent over me. “Yes.” I croaked. Damon looked like he'd aged ten years faster. “Get her some water please.” He tapped Dathan, who ran along. “How do you feel?” Damon asked me as soon as Dathan left us both to ourselves. “Dead.” I answered, choking. “That's fair.” Damon sighed, looking away. “Why did you do what you did?” “Because I wanted to?” I replied lamely. My head hurt so bad, it felt extra heavy to hold up. “You don't get to do that.” Damon said to me, his face morphed from concern to unexpression. “I don't get you.” I answered, straightening up. “I don't need saving!” Damon yelled, and punched the table beside me. Coincidental
Emily's POV “Damon, son of the pack, do you vow to stand beside her in the hunt and in the stillness, in the light of the moon and the darkness of the forest, in wolf, and in man form?” An older man asked Damon. “I do.” Damon replied. “With my heart, my strength and my loyalty, I am hers.” Silence! “Emily, daughter of the pack, do you vow to stand beside him through the turning seasons, to share in his triumphs and bear his burdens as though they were your own?” He asked me next, and like clock work, the crowd turned to face me. “I do.” I replied, like I had rehearsed. “With my soul, my spirit, and my devotion, I am his.” “Then let the bond be sealed.” The elder said, and our hands linked together, like they were supposed to. I never knew the Damon Palace had such a large space for hosting that amount of crowd. More still, it had a detachable roof, and so since the wedding had to be done under the moonlight, we could still do it indoors. The joy on everyone's faces m
Emily's POV “I'm sorry, that's so unprofessional of me.” Sasha apologised. “It's human, not unprofessional.” I excused her. “Matter of fact, can we be more unprofessional going forward? I think I like that vibe.” I smiled. “Sure, Emily. Thankfully, there are no audio requirements from this session.” “Gracias.” I said. “Back to your story, darling…” She smiled. “What else do you want to know?” I asked. “How did you let a man take control?” She asked me. “Is that beneficial to this interview?” I questioned. “Maybe.” She answered. “Alright. Adrian and I got together just a few months after a very lavish party that was thrown in Mount Leigh. It was the talk of town for weeks, all three Alphas were there.” “I heard about that. “She acknowledged. “And how was the party, if I may ask?” “You may not. It was hell.” I said. “Back to Adrian then.” She moved on. “Well, he seemed cool. We had lunch at his house one day, and he seemed pretty awesome, my kin
Emily's POV “Hello Emily, I'm Stacy, and I'm downstairs.” she said. I passed out a bit in the bed where I also scattered the contents of my purse. It'd been a long day, long week, long life! “Hmm, I'm coming.” I answered her, still sleepy-eyed. “No, you don't have to. Just tell them to let me up. I'd hate to be a bother that much.” Sasha said. “Uhm, okay. Can you give her the phone?” I asked. “It's a guy down here.” Sasha informed me. “Oh, yeah, please. Give it to him.” I said, remembering that it was a guy I met too. “Hi Ma'am.” He greeted me. “Hello, I'm sorry, I can't remember your name anymore. Please let her up. I'm Emily Baron, check that on your register.” I croaked. “Alright ma'am. Room service was in your room earlier, but you were unresponsive, would you like to have them back now?” He asked “Yes please, I could use some water.” I answered. “Coming right on. Have a nice stay, ma'am.” He said and handed the phone back to her. I cut the call,
Emily's POV “I hate this life.” I said to myself as I stopped by Zac's house to pick the rest of my stuff. “I'm heading for Zachary's apartment.” I said to the doorman, hoping he'd recognise me. “Oh, yes I remember you. But Mr Zac is not at home.” He said. “That's fine, he knows I'd be coming to grab my things.” I said, in a rush. I also tried to hide the fact that I was getting a little bit fidgety. “I hope he didn't hurt you?” The man asked. I was literally at the verge of screaming for him to just let me go, but I saw that it was out of concern and experience, so I let him off the hook. “I really don't want to talk about it,” I said, smiling sadly. “I understand.” The man replied. “Policy is that you cannot be in over ten minutes, so I'd ask that you be quick.” “That will do. Thank you so much.” I said and dashed into the elevator. I know it was a little stupid that I'd do that stunt on my own, knowing that Zyna had access to his place, but I'm sure if anyone
Damon's POV “How do you feel?” I asked Emily. We'd just ridden back from the hospital. Zac was to be operated on in a few hours, Adrian's diagnosis was out, and they found absolutely nothing wrong with him, but they had to watch him. “I don't know.” She replied. She sat still in her car, even minutes after she'd turned the engine off. I waited for two full minutes before she whined down the glasses. “That's normal.” I said, rubbing her hand. But she drew back suddenly from my touch. “Something is wrong.” I said. “I'll see you later, Damon.” She said, starting the engine. “There's no way I'm letting you leave like this.” I objected. “It's not up to you.” She replied, and pressed a button to shut her car glasses. I stubbornly leaned on it, and so the glass didn't come up. “I've spent way too much time in the gym for this to be a threat.” I boasted. “Emily, please tell me what's on your mind.” “My whole life is, Damon!” She yelled. “It's easier on you than it i
Adrian's POV “What are you doing here?” I yelled as I saw Damon emerge. The doctors were still running around with their tails between their legs, trying to get a diagnosis for what was up with me. “I think I should be asking you that.”He said quietly. He stood in the doorway. “I thought I heard Emily's voice.” I said, ignoring him. “That's because she's here.” He said sarcastically. “Hello.” I greeted her as she forced her way in. “Why are you here?” She asked. “Aren't you here to see me?” I replied to her questions with mine. “I don't owe you that.” She said, brushing it off. “I had a crisis in the taxi I boarded, good guy rushed me here.” I explained. “What crisis?” She asked, looking frightened. “That's not why we are here, Emily.” Damon reminded her, pulling her closer even if she wouldn't budge. “No one knows. I started bleeding suddenly, and it stopped as suddenly as it started, but I passed out.” I explained. “Who's attending to you?! Yo
Damon's POV “I think we should go and check up on Zac.” Emily said. We'd just had the best morning of our lives, at least of mine. “Why are you bent on ruining the fun?” I winced. “I'm not ruining anything, Damon. This is literally all we can do.” She chuckled. “I can't believe I let Farh see me like this” “Well, I can.” I said. “And you're sure that is not going to be a problem?” She asked. “With who? Me? Hell nah.” I answered. “Not you. You know who I'm referring to.” She said, “I don't think they're best of friends, Emily.” I assured her. “I hate to be on this side of things.” She sulked. “Isn't it too soon? Seeing as this is just the Beginning?” I asked her. “Beginning of our business together you mean?” She looked me in the eye. We were sprawled across my office floor, naked. “This isn't business. Why are you doing it?” I asked her. “Because I want to.” Emily replied. “I'll make sure to give that answer every time I feel this way.” I jok
Emily's POV “This is not the conversation I expected to have when I walked into your office this morning.” I said. “Same. Although it's one I've always wanted to have with you” Damon smirked. “I would've wondered why that is, but then, I remember you're both possessive and manipulative. Something about seeing your exes thriving with other people irks the fuck out of you.” I shot at him “For the first time, love, you're wrong,” Damon said. “I have a wife whom I shared with the man I almost killed.” “That was against your knowledge, Damon. Don't act like you'd have let it happen if you knew.” I said. “Something else you've gotten wrong. You think I want Zyna to bear my heir?” Damon asked me. I looked at him wide eyed. I couldn't believe what he was saying. Worse still, I'd begun to imagine a million things. “Yet you pushed her to go get pregnant by another male?” I asked him. “I didn't. She wanted it.” He answered. “And you claim to have let it happen?” I ask
Damon's POV I was naked, and beginning to feel a bit cold. “Here's your clothes.” Emily brought me the rest of what I'd been wearing. My shirt was a wreck, but the pants were manageable. “Did I hurt you?” I swallowed before asking. I wanted to know. And as much as I wanted to, I also didn’t. I would not have been able to live with myself if I singed even the smallest hair on her. “Not me, just him, and this pretty bathroom.” Emily answered. She had her back turned towards me. “Please look at me.” I begged. “Damon, I want to leave.” She said, “Damn! I'm that bad.” I soliloquised. “Don't emotionally blackmail me, Damon.” Emily replied. “I wish that's what I was trying to do. I'm simply stating the obvious. You can't wait to be away from this mad man, with an unstable wolf. I mean, he's an Alpha, and doesn't even have control of his wolf. Is it because he wasn't even supposed to have one in the first case? Or because he wasn't supposed to survive his first
Emily's POV “What are you doing here?” I asked him, stunned. “I'll shout, call for security. Why are you here! But it was locked from outside! Get out!” I searched frantically for my purse with pepper spray, but I remembered that I left it in Damon's office. “You heard I was out of the hospital huh?!” “Emily, please calm down.” Zac begged. Around his eyes were circles far darker than Adrian's. “What the hell are you doing in here?!” I asked him again. “Have you forgotten that I work here, Emily?” He replied, trying to calm me down. “No, I haven't. But you have a lot to explain to the authorities, not me, and I'll make that more if you do not get out of here right now!” I screamed. “Please lower your voice.” He begged. Then I remembered that Damon was waiting outside for me. He could probably make out a few noises, but nothing enough to barge in. “Damon is outside, if you do not get out right now, I'll scream his name.” I threatened. “How would I Emily? you kn
