Jett POV
I could not help but laugh at Clove's report. "So my girl really is a criminal, huh?" I realized my slip of tongue the moment I said the words. Then I stole a quick glance at my Beta to see if he noticed. He hid it well if he did. "I'm working on IDing his werewolf friend," he went on. "But here's the interesting part. The man is based in Los Angeles, Alpha. And I've... completely lost the wolf's trail. Manny can't tell which way he went after he left Westwego. Proves their experience. They were definitely hired." Hired? I guess I would find out who hired them soon? The fact that the human was based in LA was interesting, indeed. That was the City of the Forest Moon. A pack that was more than mere ally. The Mooners were brothers of the Night Storm pack. I fought side by side with Alpha Nick of the Forest Moon. The City of Jefferson and my new pack were the prize of that battle. I became Alpha of the Night Storm after we killed the former Alpha, who was a mutual enemy. Apart from that, Nick and his Beta were my brother in-laws. The latter mated my little sister recently. Clove was still talking. I half-listened as memories of that night of battle played before me. I'd been thirsty for Alpha Laz' blood. But Nick got to him before I did. He cut off his head and took it with him to L.A. "So far, we know that the raven girl has never stepped foot in Los Angeles, so it's very confusing. We could figure out what Loki Freeman wants with her without wasting time, but you said not to let him bleed too much, so..." "Who the hell's Loki Freeman?" I asked absently with my eyes fixed on the girl's door. "The human," Clove replied. "Her stalker. Name's Loki." "Oh. Go on." "Richard Wolfe is not answering his phone," he said. "The wolf friend is probably from L.A, too. If I could reach him, he might be able to explain." "Yeah," I breathed. "My sister said he's dealing with some personal shït." Clove was right. The human needed to bleed to make him talk. I would go handle that myself. Or I should go ask the little bird all the questions I had about her. I stood there for a long time, unable to decide and letting my mind roam till it returned to images of her sliding down that pole in the club. Barely clothed. While everyone gawked at her ample cleavage and smooth thighs. My irritation rose along with an idea. "He could be a human trafficker? Seems that's serious business around here!" "Actually, there's nothing like that in what we found. He's just a bounty hunter, Alpha. He does some PI work once in a while, but that's it." "Maybe he's branching out," I argued. "People work two or three jobs in this country, Beta. I bet he plans to kidnap and traffick the raven!" Saying the words made my chest grow hot. "Did you say you lost the wolf? She's probably from his pack. If he's not a Mooner, that is. I'll go ask the pretty man myself. She can't leave here no matter what. I'll be back soon." Clove simply nodded and mumbled, "Yes, Alpha. Oh, I forgot." "What?" "Andy called," he said. That was the new Gamma I chose when I became Alpha. "It's about the Ruby princess. She's in the pack. She came with her uncle to visit his friend. We both know she's there because of you." "We already talked," I replied. "I'll call her later!" **** One hour later, I'd had to make Loki Freeman bleed a little more than I initially planned in order to get some answers out of him. What he told me did not make any sense, and he wasn't lying. Richard Wolfe, Chief of Security in Reigns Group, L.A, sent him and his wolf friend to track the girl. To the human, Richie was a top dog. His boss' boss or boss' boss' friend. An influential guy who was friends with the police chief and ate at the same table with the creme de la creme in L.A city. But to me, Richie was Chief Gamma of the Forest Moon. A dear friend. An ally. I was alarmed by the fact that he'd sent them here. What the bloody hell could he want with the little bird? I mumbled to myself. Making sure the human stayed locked up, I ordered guards to stay close, then returned to the motel. 'I think she's asleep now,' Clove linked the moment I arrived. I was surprised and didn't believe it till I moved closer. She hadn't tried to run away? Not even when she didn't feel me nearby? There was no need to go near the door to feel the soft, peaceful inhale and exhale that meant she truly was in dreamland. Wow! One would think sleep should desert her on such a night as this. 'Still can't get Richie on the phone?' I asked my Beta. He shook his head. "I need to head over there immediately," I said. As he began texting to prepare my ride, I turned around to leave but stopped directly beneath the motel sign. The plane was ready within the hour. Clove linked to tell me this, but I merely nodded. It was the dead of night anyway. No need to rush. I waited and didn't set out until dawn's light appeared in the sky. Just when I was about to leave, I felt movement. Then the girl's door opened and she emerged. She stared at me for a few seconds then went back inside. What a strange girl! 'I'll be back in a few hours,' I said to Clove, then set out for the Forest Moon.Jett POVI left the mansion at six minutes before 7 PM and didn't plan to end up in my Chief Gamma's office. The thing was, Sabrina and I were supposed to go out for dinner, like Clove advised. We were to leave at 7. I was so sure she wouldn't be ready yet. Females took longer to dress up. Everyone knew that.I was ready. And Sophie was not back. So I came out of my chamber to check if she was on her way up. This check was necessary because it was past time for them to bring her back. But there was no sign of her or her warriors. I'd ordered the new head servant to leave all punishment to me. No one was to lay a finger on her for any reason, and especially not for this morning's incident. Punishing her was my sole right. No one else's. They wouldn't go against my order. Yet I'd been restless as hell. The idea of calling Vera or Kyle to ask why they weren't back was unappealing. Those two already suspected that I cared too much for the girl, and they were not alone. I shouldn't give
Sophie POVAndy stopped smiling. For a moment, he looked like he was deep in thought. What was he expecting when I said I needed help?"You want me to help you get out of here or show you how to protect yourself from the pain?" He asked with a slight frown. "I mean, I saw the way you looked at those two, Sophie Nile. I'm sure it hurts you deeply to see them like that every day. I've heard stories. But leaving the pack again? That's a bit dramatic.""I don't belong here, Chief," I said. "And the stories you heard? All of it is true. It hurts. If I'm far from here, I won't feel the pain. Please, help me.""But you're wrong, Sophie. You will feel pain. The distance will make your wolf yearn for her mate. There's only one way to take care of heartbreak. You really wanna know my price? You can't pay it if you disappear, pet.""I have a lot of money in the human world," I insisted. "I can wire it to you once I leave."He laughed briefly, shaking his head. "That's right. I heard you were fo
Sophie POVThe hateful female who was Jett's fiancée stood in front of the ladder staring up at me. I half-expected her to shake the ladder and make me lose my balance. I didn't spare her a glance soon enough. Jett's eyes held mine like a spell. He knew the apology was fake."She must be flogged, Alpha! Chief Marquez, you must see to it!" I forced my eyes from the Alpha's to regard his fiancée and chief warrior. "Why the hell is she wearing jeans?" The question was directed at the new head of servants. The female seemed too anxious to answer. It felt like she'd only just realized that I wasn't wearing the regular clothes. It was Jett who replied,"Those work clothes are too big for her."Apparently, the poor fiancée didn't know that her mate-to-be had them bring me new clothes, huh. Why was he acting so confusing? Moments ago, I'd caught how his eyes skimmed my body.Yesterday, he'd ordered them to let me take the whole day off to "fully recover." I also got two meals. The first ca
Jett POVThere had been many females in my life. Of the two Chase brothers, I was the playboy back in Tauranga. I had my share of women, both she-wolves and humans. The fact that merely touching a girl's hand had gotten me all excited was laughable. But it was also proof that I needed to be on my guard around the raven. According to the tales, it became more difficult to let go if you dared get intimate with your fated mate. I left the window as this thought struck. As I walked out of the library, I decided that Clove was a hundred percent right. I needed to start showing seriousness with Sabrina. That should get my heart and head back on track. My wolf raised a silent protest, but I ignored the gnawing feeling in my chest. Thank Fate, I was in control, not him.I entered the hallway, and instead of going to my study, I decided to go for a patrol round the pack to make sure all was as it should be. Alphas often did these types of rounds unannounced and without schedule. It was the b
Jett POVClove looked like he had a lot to say. We hadn't had time to chat because of business, internal and external. He waited patiently now as I gulped down the bottle of cool water. I finished and tossed the empty in the trash. "What the update, Beta? Any leads on the assailant in the woods?""No, Alpha. In fact, I fear we've reached a dead end." He looked slightly ashamed. "What about the other part?""I'm still on it. All we know for now is that Sophie Nile has been in the city of the Crimson Lake for sure. But we've also learned that she moved about a lot, so I feel it's not enough to prove she's involved with that pack."That last bit gave me tiny relief. "I see." No matter what, I didn't want to learn that Raven was indeed a spy for the Crimson Lake pack. I would wonder why later, not now.I tried to pay attention as Clove began speaking again,"The elders know Sophie Nile. Her mother was kind of famous for a time. Alpha Laz's favorite prostïtute, as they called her." He m
Sophie POV"He's treating you badly, isn't he?" Tessa asked."I'm in the hospital!" I replied. "Shelly Sandner, the evil mistress. You remember her, right?""Of course, I do. Oh, no!" She cried."Yeah," I replied. "Now if you care even just a little bit, you'll get your Alpha to help me!"It didn't matter to me that my chief jailer was standing right there. I glanced at him. His face was as straight as a wall. Like the conversation had nothing to do with him. He also looked like he had no intention of giving me privacy. "Do you mind?" I barked, motioning at the door. "I need privacy."He began to step back, and I thought he would oblige me, but he went and leaned against the door and crossed his arms.Only then did I notice that he had pulled up his sleeves, revealing the powerful muscles of strong, nicely tanned flesh. It was an effort to tear my eyes away. Thankfully, Tessa began speaking again,"Where are you locked up? Is it near the farms? What did the mistress do to you? She as
