Chapter 103

News arrived before dawn.

Selene was in the healing wing when Beta Andrew rushed in, his face pale and drawn. He did not speak at first, only bowed low, which told her everything she needed to know.

“Which pack?” she asked quietly.

“The Ashfall pack,” Beta Andrew said. “Their alpha has sworn loyalty to your mother.”

Selene closed her eyes to hide the rage bubbling in them. Being angry or disappointed won’t solve any of her problems.

Ashfall had been one of the first packs to listen to her. Their lands guarded a vital mountain pass. If they turned, the balance of the region shifted.

Killian arrived moments later, already dressed for battle. “They have already sealed their borders,” he said. “No scouts are allowed through.”

“Did they attack anyone?” Selene asked. Her main concern was whether there had been any bloodshed, because that might cause even more packs to follow the Ashfall.

“Not yet,” Killian replied. “But they detained our messengers.”

Chapter 105The dawn arrived pale and gray, the river mist curling in soft tendrils across the valley. Selene stood at the edge of the camp, wrapped in her silver cloak, watching as her warriors checked defenses and supplies.Even in victory, there was still tension. The river clans had survived this first test, but every pack that followed would be more dangerous and ambitious. Her mother’s influence was spreading faster than she had anticipated.Killian approached silently, his presence steady and grounding. He rested a hand on her shoulder, feeling the tension in her muscles. “Did you even sleep?” he asked quietly.Selene shook her head. “Not really. Even when we were safe here, I could feel her shadow. It doesn’t stop.”“You carry too much of the burden alone,” Killian said, his voice firm. “You don’t have to.”Selene glanced at him, grateful for the support, but the weight of responsibility settled in her chest again. “It isn’t just leadership,” she said softly. “It’s knowing tha

chapter 104The river clans lived along the lowlands, where the land dipped gently, and water moved slowly and wide. Tall reeds bent with every passing wind, whispering secrets older than any pack.Boats were tied along the banks, nets hung to dry, and wooden homes stood on raised ground to avoid the river’s moods. They were traders, healers, and fishermen, but no warriors. When Selene arrived, fear already clung to the air like damp fog.Children were hurried indoors, small hands gripping their mothers’ clothes. Elders gathered in tight circles, murmuring prayers to spirits that had not been called upon in years.A handful of guards stood near the riverbank, holding spears with cracked shafts and blades dulled by time. They stood bravely, but the fear in their eyes betrayed them. They knew they could not win a real fight.Selene stepped forward before anyone else could speak. She wore no armor. No blade hung at her side. Only her silver cloak marked her presence, catching the light a

Chapter 102The betrayal came quietly, when everyone least expected it.It did not come with shouting or bloodshed, but with a door left open where it should have been sealed.Selene felt it before anyone spoke of it. A faint pull in her chest, like a thread being tugged, when she stepped into the inner ward that morning. The air felt thinner and wrong. The protective runes carved into the stone walls flickered once before settling again.Selene stopped walking all of a sudden, and the feeling in her heart grew.Killian noticed at once and frowned. Looking at her face, he knew that she must have discovered something. “What is it?”“Someone crossed the ward last night,” Selene said softly. But they did use force or magic. They were allowed through.”Killian’s jaw tightened, and his eyes turned cold. “Only six people have the clearance to access this area.”“I know.” Selene nodded. They did not speak as they moved deeper into the pack house. Warriors followed at a distance, sensing the

Chapter 101The pack woke to the sound of horns. Not the call of celebration, but the warning tone used only when danger crossed the borders. Selene was already awake when it sounded, sitting upright as power stirred beneath her skin like a restless tide.Killian was on his feet at once the moment he heard the sound. “The scouts.”They dressed quickly and stepped outside. Warriors were already moving through the courtyard, forming lines with practiced speed. Their faces were grim, and they did not dare let their guard down.Beta Andrew approached, bowing briefly. “They did not attack,” he said. “They only delivered a message.”Selene’s stomach tightened, and her face hardened, “From her?”Beta Andrew nodded and held out a small bundle wrapped in black cloth.Selene took it carefully. The moment her fingers touched the fabric, a pulse of cold magic spread through her palm. She unwrapped it slowly.Inside lay a silver pendant shaped like a crescent moon, cracked straight through the cen

Chapter 100The next morning arrived with a strange stillness, as if the land itself was holding its breath, waiting for the mystery to unfold.Selene stood on the balcony of the pack house, watching the mist lift slowly from the trees. The eastern villages were far beyond the horizon, yet she could still feel the loss. Death left echoes, and power like hers never failed to hear them.Killian joined her, wrapping a cloak around her shoulders before she could protest. “You did not sleep.”Selene shook her head. “Every time I closed my eyes, I saw their faces. Elders who trusted the order of the packs and wolves who believed the laws would protect them.”Killian rested his chin lightly against her hair. “Your mother chose them because they represented balance. She wants total control and chaos.”“Yes, you are right,” Selene said. “But mostly, she wants control. To her, chaos is just the tool to achieve her long-term goals.”They were interrupted by hurried footsteps. Beta Andrew bowed q
