CHAPTER 123

The scream came at 2:13 in the morning.

Aria was out of bed before she was fully awake. She crossed the hall barefoot, with Damien right behind her, and pushed open the nursery door.

Cassian was sitting up in his bed with both fists in the blanket. He wasn't crying. That frightened her more than crying would have. His face was white, his eyes were wide and fixed on the corner of the room, and his chest was heaving.

"Cassian. Baby, it's Mama." She lifted him, and he clung to her at o

  • Alpha King’s One Night Mate   The Wolf That Bowed

CHAPTER 125The training yard behind the east wing had been cleared of everything but sand and a low wooden fence.Damien had agreed to this session two days earlier, after a long, bitter night with Aria. Rule six forbade strengthening Cassian's gift, but rule two allowed him to learn to stop it. So they had settled on a compromise: one wolf, one child, ten minutes, and nothing more.Aria stood at the fence with her arms wrapped around herself. Lucas had posted guards at every gate. Elara sat on a bench beside the sand with her herb bag on her knees. Along the far side, in a neat row of chairs, the Elders watched. Cotter sat with his hands folded. Mireille wore her usual calm. Harran leaned on his cane, his eyes on Cassian and not on anyone else.Cassian stood in the middle of the yard in a small gray tunic, holding Damien's hand."It's just a game," Damien told him quietly. "A wolf is going to come and say hello. You stay where you are. If you feel funny, you tell me.""Funny how?"A

  • Alpha King’s One Night Mate   Elara's Rules

CHAPTER 124Elara brought the rules in writing, on three sheets of cream paper, and read them aloud at the nursery table as though she were reading a will."One," she said. "No sudden frights. No loud arguments in his hearing, no hunting stories at bedtime, and no strangers handling him without warning."Aria nodded. That one was easy."Two. He may not use his gift more than once a day, and never for longer than a count of ten.""Once a day," Damien repeated. He stood at the window with his arms folded. "He doesn't use it. It happens to him.""Then we teach him to stop it from happening." Elara turned the page. "Three. He must never try to reach more than one wolf at a time.""Why one?" Aria asked."Because one is a conversation. Many is a command." Elara's voice stayed even. "The garden was four. That is already too many."Aria read the list over her shoulder, then took the pages and read them herself. Some made sense. Keep him calm. Keep him rested. Keep him away from crowds. But ha

That frightened her more than crying would have. His face was white, his eyes were wide and fixed on the corner of the room, and his chest was heaving."Cassian. Baby, it's Mama." She lifted him, and he clung to her at once, small arms locked around her neck. His heart hammered against her ribs. "You're safe. I've got you.""Don't go," he whispered."I'm not going anywhere."Damien stood at her shoulder, one hand resting on the boy's back. His eyes had gone red, and he was scanning every shadow in the room. "Nothing's here," he said quietly. "I'd smell it.""I know." Aria rocked, swaying on her feet. "Nobody's here but us."Cassian wouldn't go back to sleep. She tried making him go back to sleep on the bed, the

  • Alpha King’s One Night Mate   Richard's Secret

CHAPTER 122Aria found her father in the garden at dusk, sitting on the stone bench beneath the apple tree where Cassian had frozen four guards a week ago.He had a charcoal rubbing in his hands. When he heard her footsteps, he folded it and slid it into his coat."Don't," Aria said. "I saw it."Richard sighed. "I wondered if Lucas would tell you.""Lucas didn't tell me. Damien did, and he only knows what he saw in the archive." She stopped in front of him. "Dad, you looked at that symbol like you'd seen a ghost. Then you walked out and wouldn't say why. I've waited three days for you to come to me.""I know.""You didn't.""No." He looked down at his hands. "I didn't."She sat beside him, leaving a careful space between them. For a while, neither spoke. Inside the manor, a window lit, and she could hear the faint clatter of dinner being cleared."Tell me where you've seen it," she said.Richard took a long time to begin."Twenty-six years ago, before you were born, I did contract wor

  • Alpha King’s One Night Mate   The House That Withdrew

CHAPTER 121The letter arrived at breakfast, carried by a Rowan rider who refused to come inside.Lucas brought it to the table himself. Aria read it while Cassian smeared porridge across his tray.House Rowan withdraws its support from the Luna, effective immediately. We regret the necessity."Regret," Aria said. "They regret it."Damien took the page and read it once. "Rowan has stood with Blackwood for two hundred years.""They stood with Stonebridge, too." Aria wiped Cassian's hands. "Teague's Beta is a Rowan cousin. He built the dam, and I said so in front of everyone.""You told the truth.""I embarrassed their family." She stood. "Where's Edricson?"Lucas hesitated. "Already in the council hall. He asked for an early session. He has the Rowan seal with him."Damien's chair scraped back. Aria held up a hand."I'm going alone first.""Aria.""It's my ruling. If I need you, I'll look at you." She almost smiled. "Try to be quiet in the hallway."Edricson stood at the center of the

  • Alpha King’s One Night Mate   The False Ally

CHAPTER 120Lucas had kept the box for eleven months. It sat at the bottom of his office safe: the false ally's confiscated phone, a ledger, and a ring of keys no one had claimed. After the double vow, the Pack had called the matter closed. One traitor, one exposure, one punishment.Lucas had never believed it was that simple. Two days until the Council convenes on the Ward petition. Two days until strangers could claim Cassian's training. He should have been sleeping. Instead, he was at his desk at midnight, rereading a dead man's phone. The messages were all there, deleted and recovered: dates, short instructions, a few coded phrases. He had read them a dozen times when they were fresh. This time he read them differently. He wasn't asking what they said. He was asking who they were sent to.The false ally had never signed anything. Every message ended with the same closing, a small, polite phrase: As arranged.Lucas opened the ledger and found the phrase again, penciled in a margin
