"You still want to leave me, don't you?" Lionel asked calmly from where he sat on the couch.

I was silent for a while before I said, "I thought you already knew the answer to that."

"So, no matter what I do, I can't convince you to stay," Lionel said with a smile.

"That's right. Staying by your side will only make me recall the painful memories repeatedly," I said.

Lionel closed his eyes, the veins on his forehead growing more prominent as the minutes ticked by. After a few moments, he opened his eyes and said hoarsely, "Okay."

I was dumbfounded. Had I misheard him?

"W-what did you say?"

"I said okay. Leave. Take the baby... and leave," Lionel said.

"Why would you-"

"I don't want you to suffer anymore, and I don't want to suffer anymore either because of you," Lionel cut me off, the smile still on his lips. "I know you'll never forgive me, so... I won't trap you here anymore."
