Maddox’s POV:
I was making my way into the pack mansion when I sensed his presence. Only Eldric Fenrow could carry that kind of silence with so much grace. Back in the day, he was my Father’s Beta, his best friend, and in my earliest memories, I still remember him as one. He used to crack jokes all the time, laughed heartily, went on hunts with my father, and trained me to be a warrior. But now, after years of loneliness and darkness, it was hard to believe he was the same man. It had been 15 years since he even smiled. I had forgotten the sound of his laughter or the way his eyes lit up whenever he saw his mate. Now there was nothing but darkness lurking in those orbs. “You’re late,” he said blankly while stepping into the clearing. Turning around to face him, I answered blankly, “I was busy with something.” There was no need to mention what exactly I was busy with. He remained silent and only assessed me with a watchful gaze before finally moving toward me. His broad shoulders heaved up and down as he took a deep breath before inquiring, “Is there something I need to know, Maddox?” He knew. Of course, he did. Eldric Fenrow had the eyes of a hawk and the spirit of a ghost. He was everywhere at once. He knew everything he wished to know. I had never hidden anything from him. Why would I? After my father’s murder, he was the only one who held me closer. Even though he was known as my mentor, for me, he wasn’t any less of a fatherly figure. He taught me everything I needed to know and prepared me for what I needed to do. But for some deranged reason, this part of my life, this fucked up part, I wanted to keep it to myself. I wanted to keep HER to myself. It felt as if I would say it aloud, all of that would vanish…or maybe bleed into reality. A reality that was nothing more than a myth in my world. So, squaring my shoulders, I lifted my head and looked straight into Eldric’s eyes before blurting out a white lie, “I don’t think so.” His gaze narrowed, but never wavered away. After a moment’s pause, I whipped around and stepped toward the mansion when his words stopped me dead in my tracks, “You have been spending a lot of time in the human territory lately.” Tilting my head to the side, I looked over my shoulder, “And I don’t see how any of that is your concern.” Well, that was brutal of me to say that. But he remained calm and composed while moving in front of me, “You have always been focused, Maddox. For the last 15 years, I’d never once seen you distracted from your mission.” His voice lowered with a hint of sadness as he stared into the forest I’d just come from, “But things seemed to have changed now.” My fist clenched at my side, “That’s nothing but gibberish you’re talking about.” Ignoring my comment, he continued staring into the distance, “I wonder what fractured that kind of resolve.” I tensed at his words. I stayed silent because I had nothing to say that would justify my actions. After all, he was right. I had been distracted lately. For 15 years, my head was set straight on achieving my goal, and nothing could have ever succeeded in distracting me. But lately, those auburn hair and hazel eyes were all I’d wanted to chase. When the silence stretched far too long and none of us uttered a word, Eldric finally let out a tiring sigh, “You must not forget your oath. Your responsibility. Your father’s blood is still waiting for justice for 15 years and…”I cut him off sharply, “Neither have I forgotten nor have I turned away from my responsibility.” He stared at me for a few moments before his shoulders slouched in defeat, “But your footsteps have been wandering. And they are taking you away from everything you’re meant to be.” Lifting his hand, he rested on my shoulder and squeezed tightly, “You are treading on a dangerous path. Blending your world with those of humans? Dangerous thing to do.” He didn’t take her name. He didn’t need to. The way his gaze narrowed slightly, his tone turned cold and bitter at the mention of her, told me enough. He knew everything, and he didn’t like any of that one bit. Something unsettled deep inside me. I didn’t need anyone’s approval about what I was doing. But Eldric…he was important to me. Sucking in a sharp inhale, I muttered, “You won’t understand.” His gaze turned razor-like sharp, “I don’t need to,” he spat venomously. Taking an abrupt step away from me, he continued, “I only need to remind you of your mission. I’m here to make sure you don’t forget who you are. And why were you chosen. And what’s at stake. The heir of your father’s killer is still out there. You promised justice, and you need to serve it so that you can finally take your rightful place as the Alpha of this pack after a long wait of 15 years.” He shook his head slowly. Disappointment flashed in his eyes as he whispered, “Do not let this obsession turn your responsibility into treason.” His eyes narrowed into tiny slits, “Or you know about the consequences it’d have.” Jerking his hand in the air, he pointed toward the forest, “I know what you did two nights ago, Maddox.” His eyes blazed with anger, “Reckless. So very reckless of you.”Iliana’s POV: It was 3 am. He didn’t come tonight, and I kept tossing and turning on the bed, wondering why it bothered me so much. It felt like my soul was pacing restlessly in an endless void. My skin itched, desperate to feel his warmth. I was at my home and yet it didn’t feel like one. We were neither officially together nor were we actually dating…and yet having him by my side every night had become more like a routine...a ritual. Turning over, I faced the window beside my bed and wondered why I craved him like that. I missed the way his scalding breath made my skin shudder or the way his touch made me feel things I never knew were even possible. I hated it. I hated how incomplete I felt without him. I shouldn’t have let him get closer to me and yet I allowed him to consume me whole. I always knew it would happen and yet didn’t have it in me to push him away. And now… Suddenly, my mind went blank as my eyes caught a moving shadow in the window. My breathing hitched as a dar
Maddox’s POV:We all left the pack house at different times of the night and even took different paths to reach our destination.By the time I reached the cottage, Eldric was already there. Guards stationed outside the cottage for the witch’s protection bowed at my appearance, “Alpha,” they all said in unison.I nodded in acknowledgement before inquiring, “Anything I need to know about the witch?”One of them stepped forward to answer, “Nothing particular, Alpha. She had been cooped up inside the cottage for the last two days. This morning, she gave us a list and asked us to bring her some essentials from the market. We did that, after Eldric’s approval.”After another nod, I flung the door open and sauntered inside. Eldric, who had been pacing the floor restlessly, came to a sudden halt, “What took you so long?”“The fact that I had to make sure that no one was following me,” I shot back nonchalantly.Breezing past him, I walked deeper into the cottage, only to find Menerva lounging
Maddox’s POV: Ever since Derek Lysarian’s blade spilled my father’s blood and chains of paralysis bound my mother to a state of silence and stillness, I’d neither called nor ever considered the pack house a HOME. No, it never felt like one. It was a cage with no sense of belonging. A labyrinth brimming with spies and shadows, where every corner whispered with Darla’s eyes and ears. I bet she must have felt the same because…I wasn’t any less. We were two enemies, sharing a common space, keeping an eye on each other, planning our next strategies while trying to find out what must be going on in the other’s mind. Most werewolves believe that having a mate is the best blessing the Moon Goddess has bestowed on our kind. But I never agreed to that. The most powerful blessing was the ability to mindlink, a true weapon and the perfect camouflage. Just like now, when I was seated in the dining, eyes on the plate in front of me, ears on Darla’s nonsensical chattering, but mind…? Mind connec
Iliana’s POV:When I reached my apartment, Thea was already sprawled over the couch with her feet crossed on the coffee table in front. As soon as I entered, she whipped her head toward me, “You’re back. Finally.”My eyes drifted from the tub of ice cream clutched between her hands to the sitcom playing over the TV. And that was enough for me to know that whatever clash she had with her mother was over something childish because if it had been serious, I’d have come home to find another version of Thea, the one pacing the floor with fumes oozing out of her ears.Kicking off the shoes by the door, I padded into the living room, “What happened now?”She let out a dramatic sigh before rolling her eyes, “As usual, mother happened.”I chuckled softly while tossing my bag onto the armchair, “May I ask how come she ‘offended’ Your Highness this time?”Thea straightened up and narrowed her eyes into thin slits, “She scolded me over dinner just because I didn’t finish my salad.”I blinked, “Wa
Maddox’s POV:With a heavy silence lingering between us, we made our way out of the university. Iliana was walking ahead of me.Lights around the campus were off now except for little bulbs here and there but it was enough for her to look at my face if she were to turn around. But she didn’t. Not even once. And I hated that.I had just fucked her raw against the shelf housing the ancient knowledge. I was literally inside her minutes ago, her every moan was for me, she cummed on my cock before I filled her pussy with mine…but still…it wasn’t enough.I wasn’t satisfied with just having her body. I needed her gaze too. I wanted her to look into my eyes while she came apart. I wanted her to scream my name while she chased her orgasm. Now, I didn’t only want control, I wanted recognition. I wanted her to acknowledge me…to fucking own me.Frustration swelled inside me but I tried my best to remain calm and bite my tongue…until I couldn’t.My footsteps halted and I breathed in through my nos
Iliana's POV: Intertwining my fingers through his, I tightened my grip on his hand and tiptoed deeper into the shadows. For once, I was leading and he was obeying...and something about that made me feel overwhelmingly powerful. At the end of the hallway, hidden behind the rows of shelves, was a lone door. Ancient and forgotten. During the earlier days, when I was still exploring the campus, I'd discovered the place beyond the locked door. Old Archives...as students liked to call it. It was an extension of the main library but was opened only once in a few months for cleaning purposes. Stopping before the door, I commanded him, "Open it." I didn't need to ask whether he could open the lock or not. By now, I just knew that he could. He leaned closer and a cold shiver ran down my spine as his breath hit my bare neck, "Just to let you know, no one has ever dared to order me around, Little Muse." The amusement in his voice felt nowhere like a warning. If anything, it felt thrilling
