In the end, Jacob went with Ann.
"Are you sure you don't want to go attend to your girlfriend?" Ann glanced at Jacob in a casual tone, but her fingers were pure white for gripping tight on the wheel of her roadster out of nervous.
She didn't want him to, of course. She needed Lilith away, as far as possible.
"I would understand if you go." Ann continued after Jacob answered her with silence, "You know I will. I know how much she means to you."
"I called ALL the hospitals in town, and she was nowhere to be found." Jacob let out a heavy sigh, seeing that he cannot avoid this topic.
"Aren't you gonna go look for her?" Asked Ann in a small voice, glancing at him cautiously.
"And how do you suggest I do that?" Jacob closed his eyes tiredly, "I'm telling you, it's like she vaporized from the face of the earth."
Ann remembered the evil grin of that mysterious man, Edmund Gaomond. Even if he was able to save Lilith, Jacob sould have heard from her by now. What was going on?!
"How's that even possible..." Ann sighed frustratedly, "She was barely alive when I left...You think she might have died?"
"What?" Gasped Jacob as if he had seen a ghost.
"Well, I mean you don't have to assume the worst yet," Ann realized she went too far, "She's taken away by medics, that much I made sure, right?"
"I didn't know you'd care about her so much..." Jacob fixed his eyes on Ann's perfect silhouette.
Ann let out a slight chuckle as she took another glance at Jacob: "It's you who I care about, silly."
Jacob looked away in silence, but his ear went scarlet red.
"Does she have any relatives that she can turn to?" Ann didn't let the topic end easily, "Maybe they would be contacted for the accident."
She already tried and she knew full well -- she couldn't use The Shadow even now it was wakened. She had to make sure that Lilith would never be back if she wanted to hold on to The Shadow.
"She lost her parents when she was ten," Jacob shook his head in a heavy mood, "And she had been with her grandma until she was 15 when the old lady was gone as well."
"She got any foster parents then?" Ann frowned at this thought -- that would be messy.
"No..." Jacob let out a bitter laugh, "She forged papers and that was when she got to our town. I don't think the system even knew such a little orphan escaped, or ever existed."
The smile Jacob put on when he talked about Lilith was burning in Ann's eyes.
"You really like her, huh?" Said Ann in a sad tone.
"Your necklace, I have never seen you wear any jewelry before." Jacob changed the subject again all of a sudden.
"My father gave it to me this morning." Ann ran a finger down her neck with a touch of teasing, but Jacob just nodded.
"A reward for my wakening The Shadow." Still trying to get Jacob's attention to her body, Ann hooked the necklace with a finger and the sapphire jingled bumping into the metal chain, "Supposed to be a powerful magic item, I think."
Jacob frowned a bit when Ann said "powerful magic item", but Ann didn't notice.
"It's pretty." Jacob mumbled with his eyes falling out of the car window.
"What's wrong?" Ann didn't understand why he looked so down when she was so excited. She used to be able to put a smile on his face just by saying she was happy.
"Nothing's wrong." Jacob shrugged, "So how's the new wand? Our new supreme mage, I assume?" Jacob tried to use a light tone, chaging the subject.
Ann gripped tight on the wheel again --
It was frustrating enough not being able to use the relic she stole, but even more frustrating because it was now a secret that she couldn't let anyone know.
"Power is responsibility, Jacob." Ann frowned in frustration, "It's not to be used lightly."
Jacob glanced at Ann with a sullen look: "I think you'd always choose power over everything, even if it's love." Jacob shook his head slightly.
"What's wrong with wanting power?" Ann frowned at Jacob, "We are Mages. We have the privilege to pursue power, and it's something humans can't even imagine!"
"Nothing." Jacob shrugged, "Except you will never know how great it feels to be loved. It was the happiest time of my life, to be with Lilith."
"Of course I know!" Ann chuckled as she hit the gas, " She was timid and complying, just like all the boys around me, just like you."
"But that's not enought for you." Jacob grunted, not looking at Ann.
Was that why he choose Lilith? Because he thought he wasn't good enough for her? Ann never felt so relieved like this.
"It does make me feel good, silly." Ann laughed with a relieved sigh, "Did you not know that I enjoyed your company?"
Jacob shook his head: "You don't get it."
"Yes, I do!" Ann stressed her tone, "It's just not my life's goal is all. I enjoy having you around, but I have my own dream. What's so wrong about that?"
Jacob pursed his lips.
"This is what I have been telling you! Silly!" Ann exclaimed with a laugh, "You are a Mage, you can have more! So much more than an ordinary human, so long as you want."
"I don't want more! I want someone I can love!" Jacob finally let out a burst, "I want to be happy!"
"Ohh, please!" Ann rolled her eyes, "You think it's love you have with Lilith?! You only enjoyed it because she is like you to me! She admires you and obeys you, that's all!"
"It's not like that! I loved talking to her and listening to her!" Jacob protested, "I loved ALL the time spent with her and I could be myself in front of her! You would never understand!"
Ann looked at Jacob in shock, unable to utter another word at his sudden outburst.
"I'm sorry." Jacob sighed, "It had been a rough couple of days..."
"I understand." Ann murmured.
It wasn't Jacob's yelling that scared Ann, but the thought that Jacob no longer belong to her.
Jacob sighed and closed his eyes in distress.
Ann looked at Jacob with a shred of sullen in her eyes: "You've changed..."
"What are you talking about?" Jacob glanced at Ann, but his eyes didn't land on her for long.
"Your eyes," Ann touched Jacob's chin and that made him tilt his head a bit to avoid her, "There was once a time, when I was the only one living in them."
"You should keep yours on the road though." Jacob tried to make a joke, but his tone was too bitter and awkward to bring anyone joy.
Ann wanted to ask more, but her throat suddenly got so dry that she could barely squeeze out a word.
All that left between them was now silence.
"Boss. I got her for you." Buster knocked on the door and got in after he got approval from Edmund. Looking up, the first thing Edmund caught with his eyes was the pout on Lilith's face, but she didn't notice that Edmund put something in his drawer the moment they came in. "I thought we have an agreement." Edmund pushed the file in front of him a bit further away, smirking at Lilith, "I don't remember putting down 'try to escape' as part of your job description, my little maid." "I'm NOT," Lilith threw off Buster's hand on her arm, "trying to escape!" "Then why does my loyal guard has to bring you in like this?" Edmund chuckled as he came out of his desk, "Having fun playing hide and seek?" "And I don't remember losing my total freedom is part of the deal either!" Lilith protested furiously, "I wouldn't have to try to get out if I didn't lose my phone in the crash." Edmund rose his eyebrow and closed his drawer with a natural move as h
"It is wakened..." Archbishop's old and low voice put a shade of awe on the face of everyone in the room. They were all high levels of the coven, all except Jacob, who came at Ann's request. "Hank, they should know." Said the archbishop, closing his eyes tiredly as if falling asleep. "Yes, archbishop." Hand bowed at the old man and turned to the rest, "As you all know, I have taken some glimpse into our fate, doom, awaits us." The whole room listened in silence. "But sometimes, only sometimes, there are visions of a bright future for us, instead of doom." Hank continued, "But ONLY sometimes." Ann had a bad feeling when Hank stressed on that "sometimes" so many times. "But there's something I haven't told you," Hank took a deep breath before he continued, "These visions, they are prophecies of the same time." "What does that mean?" Jacob scanned the room in confusion only to realize that the confusion was not universal.
"Can we talk, please?" Edmund put his hand softly on Lilith's bedroom door but no one answered. "I haven't been eating all day." Edmund said jokingly, "Missing a little maid serving my poisonous meals." Still Silence. "I haven't really got time to talk to you, and that's my fault. I just want to know you more..." Edmund muttered to the door in front of his face. Yet again, silence. Edmund knew what he had to say, the thing that Lilith wanted to hear but he just wasn't used to say it...ever. "I know I overreacted yesterday, and I'm sorry, okay?!" Edmund sighed before he rose his voice defeatedly, "I AM sorry. You didn't do anything wrong, well, except--" Voices rose, but not from the room. It was from the hallway-- "What's the boss doing?" "Talking to a door...well, correction, apologizing to a door." "Apologizing?!" "Shhhhhh!" Edmund rolled his eyes. Shouldn't they know that he was a were
"I'm sorry!" After a short awkward silence, Lilith and Edmund burst out together, and then both shut up at the same time. "Sorry I sneaked in!" Lilith snapped out of the shock quicker, "I only want to make a phone call, nothing more!" "I understand," Delight overwhelmed Edmund at the fact that Lilith was talking to him again, "I overreacted yesterday, that was my bad." Lilith didn't mind that he wasn't able to say the word "sorry". She had bigger problems to worry about now. "It's okay, I understand!" Lilith nodded genuinely and Edmund rose his eyebrow in surprise -- Why would she even understand his reaction? He was not supposed to know her SECRET relationship with Jacob! "Anyways," Lilith put up a smile, "I tried to call Emma again but there was no answer. Should I fetch your meals now? Master?" Edmund squinted his eyes at Lilith in suspicion. If it was her guilt talk to say that she understood his overreactio
Sat in silence, Ann had been wiping tears off her cheeks for the whole ride home. Her father had not said a word after he shouted "shut up" at her in front of the whole high level at the archbishop's place. It wasn't like it was her fault that the archbishop suddenly went back on his words! Ann felt as if the anger and shame were burning inside her. "Father." Ann opened her mouth when the tears finally stopped. She knew her father wouldn't want to talk to her in tears because "tears are weak". Yet no answer. "Father, I'm sor--" "Shut up." Said her father sternly. "Mike." Ann's mother put a hand on her husband's arm, "There wasn't much she could do." "She could have NOT humiliated me in front of the whole coven!" Ann's father replied coldly, "What was that farce?! Yelling at the archbishop like a baby demanding a candy bar?!" "I'm sorry." Ann bit her lips white, trying to hold back her tears. "Sto
Jacob found Ann by the side of the road within minutes after she called. She was sitting on the curb, playing the necklace in her hand with a blank face. "Are you alright?" Jacob ran to Ann soon as he stopped the car. "Could use a lift." Ann tried to give Jacob a grin but it was too bitter. "I cannot believe the archbishop kept the wand to himself!" Seeing Ann's sorrow in her eyes, Jacob complained in a cynical tone, "No one else could light it up! I don't even understand why he would do that!" "He must have his own reasons." Ann smiled understandingly, "I just need a ride home." Knowing that Ann left with her parents, Jacob didn't have to ask anything more to know that it was her stringent father who kicked her out of the car. "Come on," Jacob pulled Ann up by her hand, "What a friend is for?" Throughout the whole ride, Ann had been curling up on the back seat with not even one word with her eyes closed, but Jacob knew
"I'm so glad you are here!" Lilith was still staring at the "failed call" on her screen when Jacob opened the door and dashed toward her with open arms. "Jacob." Said Lilith in a sullen tone when she took a step back and avoided the hug that she had enjoyed for years. Jacob paused with a frozen smile on his face before he put down his arms awkwardly: "Well... Come on in! Please, let's get inside first." Lilith followed him in silence. "Lilith!" Emma jumped off the bed the second she saw Lilith appearing from behind Jacob, "Are you alright?!" "I'm okay!" Lilith chuckled a bit at Emma's exaggerated reaction, "Just a little bump on the head, I'm fine. How about you? You look so pale..." Lilith's worried eyes moved from Emma's pale face to her bandaged shoulder: "What happened to you?!" Emma glanced at Jacob in a panicked look and that caught Lilith's eyes. "Emma--" Lilith looked into Emma's eyes, and it was too ins
"What do you mean we are not going home?!" Emma exclaimed when Lilith instructed the taxi driver to take them to a hotel downtown. "Not safe." Lilith shook her head, "It's not like we have anything we cannot leave behind." "Oh my God, Lilith..." Emma sighed, "What have you got yourself into--" Emma stopped, realizing she couldn't tell Lilith that the coven decided to let the stealing slide. But how else could she persuade Lilith to go home?! "I'm not sure..." Lilith shook her head with worry written all over her face, "But they are dangerous, that's for sure." Edmund's weird sudden changes of moods were still fresh in her head, with fear attached to those memories. "Well, I guess we are leaving our cute apartment behind..." Emma rolled her eyes in a forced light tone, "You owe me a month's rent, little devil!" "Hmmm, about that..." A guilty smile replaced the worry in Lilith's eyes, "I might also owe you a car as well."
