Chapter 2

Author: Cher
Jasper's expression darkened as a flicker of surprise and irritation flashed through his eyes.

"Elena, don't be childish." His voice carried unmistakable impatience. "You're not thinking clearly right now. You need someone to look after you. I made these arrangements for your own good."

"I said I don't need it," I replied evenly. "This is my problem to handle."

A ripple of murmurs spread through the guests. Clearly, none of them had expected me to turn down Jasper's "kindness" in public.

In their eyes, a cast-off and orphaned wolf being offered shelter by her former mate was already an extraordinary mercy.

"What do you mean by that?" Serena snapped, her voice sharp. "Jasper was kind enough to arrange a place for you, and you're still being picky?"

"I'm not being picky," I said calmly. "I'm simply refusing."

"Refusing?" Jasper's voice rose, edged with anger and threat. "You're an orphaned wolf. If you leave the pack, where exactly do you think you can go? Are you hoping you still have a chance to disrupt my ceremony?"

The words stabbed straight into my chest.

It was always those two words—"Orphaned wolf".

To them, that label was my entire identity. It was proof that I was lesser, the excuse they used to justify every insult and humiliation.

"Jasper's right," a sharp female voice cut in.

Serena's sister, Victoria Lowe, stepped forward. She was just as arrogant and cruel as Serena, and she was currently dressed in an expensive custom gown.

"A parentless stray really thinks she matters?" Victoria sneered with venom in her voice. "What, you think playing hard to get will make people notice you? That Jasper will suddenly change his mind? Don't make me laugh."

I clenched my fists, feeling my nails dig deep into my palms. The metallic taste of blood spread across my mouth as I bit through my lip.

"Victoria," Serena said, pretending to intervene, though her eyes gleamed with satisfaction. "Even if her background is unfortunate, we shouldn't hurt her feelings like that."

Victoria scoffed loudly enough for everyone to hear. "If she had any dignity, she wouldn't still be standing here. She's been officially rejected and still has the nerve to show up at her ex-mate's bonding ceremony. Does she not have shame at all?"

The whispers grew louder.

Some people snickered, and others shook their heads. Many looked at me with a mix of pity and contempt.

Every gaze felt like a blade, and every laugh rubbed salt into an open wound.

An older werewolf sighed and said, "Young, orphaned wolves these days really don't know their place."

Another woman chimed in, "Exactly. He's made it clear he wants nothing to do with her, and she's still clinging on. How embarrassing."

I wanted to argue, and I wanted to tell them the truth. But my throat felt locked tight, so not a single word was able to escape.

Just then, Victoria's expression shifted. Her eyes lit up with excitement. She looked almost manic, as if she'd just won the lottery.

"Oh! I almost forgot that I have wonderful news to announce!" she called out, successfully drawing everyone's attention. "Everyone, I have something thrilling to share!"

The ballroom gradually quieted as all eyes turned toward her.

She lifted her glass, her smile radiant. "I'm going to be bonded to Alpha Damon of the Blackwood pack! The official bonding ceremony will take place next month!"

The room erupted into murmurs.

The Blackwood pack was the largest pack in North Anthica. It's Alpha, Damon Fox, had a legendary alpha bloodline and was spoken of in awe.

Guests rushed toward Victoria, congratulating and flattering her, desperate to attach themselves to that connection.

"This is incredible!"

"Congratulations!"

"Victoria, you're so lucky!"

Greed gleamed in Jasper's eyes. He immediately abandoned Serena and strode toward Victoria. "This is amazing news! Victoria, if you need anything at all, the Silvermoon pack stands ready to assist!"

Everyone crowded around Victoria, praising and cozying up to her, as if she were already the most important person in the room.

No one looked at me anymore.

I stood alone in the corner, completely forgotten. It was like I didn't exist.

Their snobbery and ruthless pragmatism were laid bare.

"Elena, this is a joyous occasion for the Silvermoon pack," Jasper said coldly, not sparing me a glance, his tone laced with warning. "Behave yourself. Don't make a scene."

"Elena! My Elena!" Jasper suddenly shoved Serena aside and lunged toward me, completely unhinged.Tears streamed down his face. "This is all my fault! I was blinded!"He dropped to his knees in front of Damon, his voice breaking. "Elena's the only one I've ever truly loved. I'd do anything for her."The moment he realized he'd backed the wrong side and destroyed his own future, he launched into a frantic display of regret."Elena, do you remember the night we first met? That rainy night?" He sobbed uncontrollably. "I said I'd protect you for the rest of my life! I said you were the most precious thing I'd ever have!"You know how my family took you in and treated you like their own. The Moon Goddess witnessed our bond and those vows! I never meant to leave you."I listened to his rambling, utterly unmoved."It was all Serena!" He suddenly spun around and slapped Serena hard across the face as she lay on the floor. "This cruel bitch threatened me! She said if I didn't go along wi

The guests stood frozen, as if struck by lightning. Their eyes went wide, and their minds were unable to process what was unfolding before them.Jasper's face drained of color. He stared at me in Damon's arms, his body swaying as if he might collapse at any second."No… Impossible…" he muttered under his breath. "Elena can't be… She's just a nobody… an orphaned wolf with no pedigree…""An orphaned wolf?" Damon lifted his head. His icy gaze swept across the room before settling on Jasper. "Did you just say my sister is a nobody?"The way he looked at Jasper made it seem as though he could be crushed in an instant."Look closely at her eyes," Damon said coldly. "Those silver-moon eyes are the sole proof that she's a direct descendant of the Blackwood Alpha line."At those words, several older wolves immediately pulled out their phones, frantically searching for something.Soon, someone uncovered old photographs of the Blackwood pack from over 20 years ago.In the photos, the form

The ballroom fell into dead silence.A suffocating wave of alpha dominance swept through the room, and everyone shivered involuntarily.Even the usually arrogant Victoria and Serena felt their knees buckle.Damon Fox stepped into the hall. He wore an impeccably tailored black suit worth a small fortune, and behind him stood more than a dozen warriors in black—evidently highly trained. But the most terrifying presence was Damon himself. He had silver eyes like mine, but now they burned with unimaginable fury.He was tall, perfectly built, and had sharp, noble features. He radiated authority that pressed down on everyone."Damon!" Victoria rushed toward him. Excitement lit up her face, and she was utterly oblivious to the rage etched into his. "You came at just the right time!"She pointed at me, who was still kneeling on the floor, as her voice dripped with smugness. "This filthy orphaned wolf impersonated your sister and tried to sabotage the ceremony! Serena and I were just

I grabbed a wine glass off the table and slammed it hard against the floor. The glass shattered, fragments spraying across the ground."Elena! Have you completely lost it?" Jasper roared. In an instant, more than a dozen warriors surged forward and closed in on me. Their eyes burned with hostility, as if I were some dangerous intruder."I'm not crazy," I said calmly. "I'm protecting my dignity.""Dignity?" Serena sneered. "What dignity could an orphaned wolf possibly have?"I took a deep breath and looked at the warriors keeping me in. In my desperation, the words slipped out before I could stop them. "Alpha Damon is my brother. He won't let this go."At the same time, I hurriedly pulled out the report Damon Fox had sent me.The room fell into stunned silence. Then, laughter erupted."Elena, if you're going to make things up, at least make it believable!" Victoria laughed until tears spilled from her eyes. "The Alpha of the Blackwood pack is your brother? Do you think we're idi

I watched Jasper's thrilled expression and how he hovered around Victoria with open flattery. A deep chill ran through me.This was the werewolf who once swore eternal devotion to me.When it came to his own interests, he couldn't even be bothered to pretend anymore."I'm not causing a scene," I said coldly. "The mate bond is already broken. There's nothing between us anymore, and it's perfectly reasonable that I'm refusing your arrangement."Jasper finally turned to face me with a gloomy expression. "Elena, are you jealous or something? You can't stand seeing anyone else doing better than you, can you?""Jealousy?" I couldn't help laughing with mockery. "Jealous of what? Your fake affection, or the way you all use each other?"The guests immediately began whispering and casting looks my way again."What did you just say?" Serena snapped. "Elena, don't push it too far!""Too far?" I scanned the room, taking in the well-dressed wolves surrounding me. "I'm just telling the truth.
