Caspian’s POV I held Sam in my arms, rocking her backward and forward, hoping she would find comfort in the mate bond. I felt useless, all these resources at my disposal, and I was as helpless as a pup. As we didn’t know Ellie’s last location, Reagan took it upon himself to go with Phillip to look for Ellie’s truck. It made sense, as she broke down somewhere on her way here. Reagan and Sam were the only ones who knew what the truck looked like. I didn’t tell Sam, as even though she was in no condition to go, I wouldn’t have let her.I held onto Sam until she fell asleep. But every time I moved, she stirred. So I stayed put. I talked to Hawk about how tonight should have been the night Sam marked me. Now, the only option I have is to tell her who I am, and hopefully, she will forgive me. But when do I do it? But what if she rejects me for my deceit? Could I bear the humiliation? If she did it in front of everyone. “There is one good thing to come of this, regardless Sam accepts or r
Ellie’s POV “You can do this Ellie,” Kiki told me confidently. I could already do this for an animal. But Ingrid is in her human form. I have never done this to a human. But Kiki’s faith and encouragement gave me the shove I needed to say, “Okay,” I said, kicking Markus awake. “I need boiling water, clean towels, and someone whose wolf is dormant,” I told him before I picked up my small leather case, which contained my suture and scalpel set. “Ingrid, I am going to help you relax. But it won’t last. There is nothing I can give you for the pain.” She cried, but nodded her head in understanding. “Ingrid, this is important. No matter how much pain you’re in, your wolf can’t heal you, or I won’t be able to get the baby out. Does she understand?” I told her. She is going to need Aaron to help her through this. So I told him to get a face covering. Fran tried to reach for Ingrid, but she couldn’t lift her arm that far. As I couldn’t monitor both women, I dragged the beds closer togethe
Ellie's POV I stood at the back of a crowd of people as a screaming older woman covered in blood was carried past through the camp. I silently watched the rogue pack’s visible distress. But it was when Aaron carried a younger pregnant woman in his arms that the camp became distraught. I couldn’t see the extent of their injuries, but the mutterings among the people insinuated that neither of them would make it. “Why would you say something so horrible?” I yelled at a woman standing in front of me. My position prevented me from making that assessment, so I don’t know how she could.More than a dozen people turned and looked at me. A young girl was the only one brave enough to speak. “There was so much blood. Fran must be hurt badly.”“No one makes it when they are hurt that badly. We’re rogues, we have no supplies and get no help from anyone,” a woman told me while stroking the girl’s hair. I looked at the surrounding people. Surely there is someone with some medical knowledge. But th
Reagan’s POV Caspian paced around his office, shouting and cursing, blaming himself for not sending someone to pick Ellie up. “Ellie wouldn’t have gotten in the car with a stranger,” I told him. If anyone is to blame for this, it’s not Caspian. Callan was panicking and insisted we find Ellie’s last known location. That we get out there and search for her. He had the motivation, but given his disadvantage, he would only slow the trackers down. “I know wherever she is, she’s alive. She just has to be,” Callan told me adamantly. I closed my eyes and prayed to the goddess, begging that Ellie was safe. Richard once said Ellie was special, and he was right. She may not have been my mate. But we connected, and the thought of her being missing was painful. The fear of losing her made me realize how quickly I had grown to have feelings for her. “We have to tell Sam,” Caspian told me. I closed my eyes, not sure if I could. Not because she didn’t deserve to know. But because I am struggling
Ellie’s POV “I should have packed lighter,” I complained to Kiki as I adjusted the straps on my backpack and walked along the road. I didn’t know why it was so heavy. Inside, I only had a change of clothes for the ceremony, the invitation from Phillip, a few hygiene products, and what I would call emergency medical supplies. “I won’t be carrying all of that tonight. It’s essentials only,” she responded. “Whatever.” I accepted Kiki wouldn’t be able to carry a bag this heavy. But I never go anywhere without a few medical supplies. You never know when you are going to need them. At least if Kiki is running, there will be no need for that stuff, so I will hide some of my stuff and return for it later. Each time a car approached, I’d straighten my backpack and put out my thumb. But no one ever stopped. Worse yet, as there was no sidewalk, I almost got hit several times. Eventually, after another near miss, Kiki convinced me to walk behind the barriers that ran alongside the road. I
Reagan’s POV While we were away, Sasha worked alongside Caspian. Liaising with event planners for the multiple events that were about to take place at the palace. As per his policy, with her being pregnant, she couldn’t work security physically, but she could do it remotely. This put everyone’s mind at rest, as we all knew she would keep Sam safe, no matter what.“Sam’s upset about something. Sasha is asking if you or Caspian could visit her,” Phillip told me. Rather than disturb Caspian, I took it upon myself to find out what was upsetting the most important person in the building. As I walked through the hallways, I caught the scent of someone who shouldn’t be here, Evelyn.I knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. When I saw Sasha’s face, I took the opportunity to ask her why Evelyn was still in the building. “She had been trying desperately to get a meeting with Caspian. To discuss the rogue situation in the Dire Wolf Pack. She’s here because you were dealing with i
