Once Mom and I reached the porch, Genesis grabbed my suitcase. He quickly rushed to the car, where Jasher was already waiting.

Zach gave my mom a polite nod. "We're heading out now, ma'am. Thank you for having us."

"Of course. It was my pleasure, Zach." Mom extended her hand. "Please take care of Bernice for me. And thank your father for his generosity."

Zach shook her hand. "I will."

I hugged Mom tightly, trying hard not to cry. We didn't say much, just "Take care" and "Call me."

There were so many things I wanted to say, but I couldn't bring myself to tell them. I wanted to warn her about King Max, but I didn't want to worry her. I didn't wish to leave her to be any harder.

"Bye, Mom! See you in December!" I said, waving.

"Yeah, sweetie pie! Bye!" She waved back with a bright smile.

For now, at least, I could give Mom some peace of mind, even if she didn't know what I was really going through.
