BILLIE

There’s a kid asleep on one of the benches in the booths near the bar. He’s been here since New Year’s Day, three days ago. Just another day in the Gaelic Wolf, Meridian’s townie, human-owned, 80 year old Irish American Werewolf pub, patronized solely by wolf shifter college students and faculty from Crescent University. Where 100% of the front-of-house employees—minus the bartenders—are young townie human girls looking for rich wolf shifter college boy tips, and the door never really closes.

I’m a human, and not a college student. Not yet.

I’m waiting the results of an audition for a modern dance scholarship.

In the meantime, momma’s treatment has to be paid somehow, and townie bars are the best places to get paid under the table.

Werewolves and humans have been coexisting for centuries. It’s only recently, in the past fifty years, that treaties have been signed and werewolves have integrated further into society. A shortage of female werewolves, coupled with a growing need among their young to coexist more closely with their peers, has led to werewolf packs settling closer to human towns, and even sometimes within their limits, founding the werewolf colleges, like the one here in Meridian, Crescent University. Crescent U. also takes human students, but they're a minority. Hopefully, they'll take me.

There are occasional skirmishes between werewolf packs, but the werewolves seem to view humans as incredibly fragile, occasionally cute, and mostly harmless. There are humans, especially human females, who will voluntarily go to live with werewolf packs and act as servants or, from what we’re told, willing sex slaves. In pack hierarchy, humans are the lowest, with the least amount of agency and independence, and the most subservience towards the alphas. They seem to be viewed as pets. The werewolves call them, and the weakest of the female wolves, omegas–their leaders are called alphas.

It’s fascinating to me. I’ve always wondered what they get out of it, besides protection. There’s no reciprocal exchange of werewolves to humans, they’re much too powerful. The closest are the rogue lone wolves who live away from packs inside human society. They tend to keep to themselves, checking in with a home pack to ensure everyone they haven’t gone crazy and killed a bunch of humans. Lone wolves mostly just want to be left alone.

It's intimidating to live in a werewolf town after growing up among humans, I have to admit. Serving them can get a little dicey. I've only had this job for two weeks. At least the Gaelic Wolf is a cool place to work.

It's a time capsule of an 80 year old bar, a relic from a time only werewolves lived here, complete with taxidermied deer heads and tin ceilings on both floors, the only modern concessions electric lighting, a booth for the disabled, and some of the labels on the bottles behind the bar. The Wolf collects misfits, Goths in particular, as both patrons and workers.

It’s a Wednesday shift, just before 8 pm, and both floors are crowded with mostly werewolf college students newly returned from winter break. I work the second floor, which means I have to go up and down an 80-year old staircase to retrieve each order from the bar and the kitchen for a full ten hours minus lunch. It’s not my favorite shift. I’m grateful dance has given my thighs strong muscles and my body endurance.

The bar is full of goths as usual, of varying degrees of flamboyance. Most of the kids are dressed casually with Gothic touches—black lipstick here, a spiked dog collar there, black clothing everywhere. Many of the girls are wearing corset tops, real ones with stays. All of it is expensive-looking and elegant. Black nail polish is nearly universal. I’ve never seen a town with such a high goth subculture population.

I can’t afford the high end fashion the wolf shifters love and seem to wear exclusively. My uniform tonight is a pair of black velvet shorts, fishnet thigh-highs with garter belts that cut off below the shorts, showing leg, black combat boots from the Army/Navy Surplus, and a tight black tee with a plunging v neck from Goodwill. Marissa, our afternoon manager, said we were encouraged to dress sexy. The tip of my neckline reaches to just between my breasts, and to emphasize it I’m wearing a velvet choker necklace with a dangling cross. Both of my wrists are covered in several black leather bracelets mixed with chunky chains. My makeup is subtly dark, with smudged brown eyeshadow and dark, almost black, red lips. My neckline is so deep I have to pin my name tag on my shoulder. About an hour into my shift, I pile my long black hair on top of my head and stick a pencil in it. Running up and down the stairs is hot work.

I’m carrying up a round of pints for a table when I notice them. They’re sitting in an alcove in the farthest corner, my section, shrouded in shadows with light flickering from the battery operated candles in the sconces on the wall. Seven boys, seven werewolves judging by the aura of charisma flowing from their table, in varying degrees of conversation ranging from intense to bored. The bored looking one is scanning the room as if looking for his next date. He, like the others, is a brunette, his hair shaved on the back and sides and longer on top. The one sitting next to him has long black hair, a pierced nose, and a flirtatious grin on his face. He nudges the giant on his other side and tips his chin…in my direction.

I drop off my pints and slowly walk over to their table, gathering my nerves. As I walk, I look over the other boys. One, in intense conversation with the giant, has a mass of long curly black hair and what looks like a beauty mark in the shape of a star near his left eye. The next one has floppy chin-length brown hair and is gesturing dramatically, his arm over the chair of the one on his other side. I overhear parts of the conversation, which seems intense.

“Don’t try to tell us you can hold your boys back on pulling raids, especially when Dom beats one of them in the fighting ring.”

I reach the table and pull out my notebook. “Welcome to the Gaelic Wolf, what can I get you?” I pull my pencil out of my hair and shake it out like a sexy librarian. Almost the entire table looks at me.

Hey, I need the tips.

TRISTANOnce my father got to Crescent, we took Enid, Abby, and Rachel with us to see Dean Abbott. The Dean's office is full to the brim. Everyone talks at once until my father gently but firmly tells the girls to be quiet.“Connor, I don't have to tell you how little I need the headache of an out of control bitten hybrid on my campus.”“And I would understand that, but Billie is not out of control. Rachel, tell the Dean what you saw,” my father says.“We all saw it. We were eating lunch when Karissa Pierce from Delta Kappa purposely bumped into Billie from behind. She was all sarcastic about apologizing. Her friends snickered too. Then Billie started changing.”“Enid, show the Dean the photographs the school nurse took of Billie’s back.”Enid holds out a tablet. “See, you can see the mark right there where she got stabbed with a needle. There’s even dried blood. Nurse Crystal said she was available to testify that that is definitely made by a needle.”“You see, Alfred?” my father ask

BILLIE“So, how are things with Thorne?” Rachel asks Agnes. We're eating an all-girls lunch and we've decided it's safe for Agnes and Enid to sit with us since Thorne publicly claimed Agnes last night at a university-sponsored “Togetherness Rally”. She smiles that almost creepy knowing smile she gets and says, “I swear to Goddess you guys, I have never had it hotter. He just wants me so much. It's such an ego rush.”“Yeah, okay, that's good,” I say, feeling protective of Thorne, “but how do you feel about him?”“I like that he's big.” She wiggles her eyebrows. “And quiet. But in an almost creepy way, which I dig. He's got those intense eyes. And okay, yeah, I like him as a person, too. He's odd. I like that.”“Sounds like true love,” Sophie drawls.Agnes snorts. “Never! I mean it's nothing personal. I just don't want to fall in love. With anyone. Ever.”“You two make two halves of a whole,” Abby says, pointing between Enid and Agnes.“Are you implying a distaste for sexual contact ma

BILLIEThey all think they know me.I don't mean my friends, the family I've built here at the Rock House and at the House of the Children of Diana–who we're still meeting in secret, not wanting to tip off the Traditionalists that witches are working against them–I mean everyone else in this school. They think because they hear the whispers, because I'm kind even to those who are not, they know my story. No one knows my full story except Tristan, who I told late one cold night under the covers, about what it was like growing up poor with no father and a mother in and out of reality, then living alone in that trailer park with barely any security, how the men would follow me sometimes. How Spader wasn't the first guy who ever propositioned me, just the one that made me snap.No one but Tristan knows me so completely. I pour all my emotions about my change and my new fame out onto the stage as an offering to the moon goddess during my performance at the Spring Showcase. There are peopl

TRISTAN “I have to say, Billie, you're being very mature about all these changes,” my father says on the computer screen. It's a high compliment from him. “Thank you, Alpha Connor. I don’t want to be a burden to anyone.” “Nonsense,” he says. “Being a member of a pack means you're never a burden. We're here for each other. How do you feel about continuing the research study at the Institute?” “I feel fine with it, as long as it doesn't get in the way of school,” she says. “You've always struck me as a responsible girl, Billie. Are you sure about this fight? Administration has said they will allow it under Title IX. But I want to make sure this is something you want to do.” “Yes, Alpha. I need to do this for the pack.” “All right then, you have my blessing.” I close the laptop after my father signs off and turn to Billie. “Now we just have to wait.” “It will be good to have some breathing space, with Hyde's mouth shut and with campus being more calm,” she says. I pull

BILLIEI am the thing they're afraid of.As we walked around campus that first day, that was the thought that struck me the most: they're afraid of me.There are all sorts of rumors and legends about werewolves who have been turned by the bite of another wolf, I've learned.Rumors that we're bigger. Stronger. More powerful. More vicious. More…paranormal. My senses have been getting more fine tuned every day. I can focus in on one smell, or one sound, and tell where it's coming from. I can differentiate spices in my food more clearly. My sense of direction, my balance, my stealth, my reflexes, my tolerance of pain and discomfort, all are being studied and all advance further every day.The doctors and researchers at the Werewolf Health Institute are all very polite; none of them assume my cooperation or get pissy when I'm at my limit. They're all so grateful that I'm willing to be experimented on. The discomfort and pain series of experiments was particularly difficult for Tristan to s

TRISTANMy girl looks like an avenging angel in her tight black outfit and her tall black boots, flanked by her girls, all with various “don’t fuck with me” looks on their faces. I walk in front, then Billie with Abby, Sophie, and Rachel, with Dominic directly in her rear, along with the rest of the guys. We make it to the meeting place early and situate ourselves similarly, Billie taking a chair in the center with Dom off to Billie’s side to keep an eye on anything approaching her, and her girl gang acting casual but tight around her. I take a spot near the front, where I’ll be able to move around and intimidate. After a while, four guys from Lunacy come into the meeting room. They all have crew cuts, and they’re all from the football team. Sullivan is our quarterback. They stand there in a line four across. They all look desperate but determined.Sullivan is the first to speak. “We have a proposal that we think will end all this and get everything back to normal.”“Do tell,” Billie
