Chapter 6 What could he get in return?

Scarlett's point of view...

I looked behind him to check if he had any companions but found no one. He didn't have a pack or followers.

Just who he is?

Those lurking beasts were gone too, I couldn't see their corpse either. Did they go away? Or did he kill them too?

They might have sensed my presence here. Why didn't they catch me? Am I saved?

I nearly celebrated at that thought but when that blood-stained face lessened the space between us, the threat regained its existence in my heart, I shrugged.

After staring at me for quite a while, he finally raised a question. Maybe my appearance made him ask for it.

"Were you a slave to them?" he questioned in an icy tone while tilting his head and shoving his flocks behind. There wasn't any kind of gentleness or emotions in his voice but there wasn't any hostility in it either.

His expressionless face was already enough to bring the terror back to my heart and to add topping to it, the blood on his face had dried deep maron.

I nodded in response, clasping my ripped skirt tightly on both sides, trying to find a voice that had drowned deep inside my gut to respond.

"Y..yes..." I retorted stuttering, when he bent forward and pulled me out of the tree hole in just a go.

I swallowed in fear. Though his scent had a soothing effect on me, I was never in contact with any other males. His huge palm on my thighs and my shoulder was like an animal trap and I felt really awkward being trapped like a little rabbit.

"They wanted to kill you?"

He added watching me curiously settling me on the soft grass bed that he had arranged back then. I tried to sit up to face him and nodded, unknown of what I should justify.

"Why...??" he asked and I held my breath for a second. I can't possibly tell him about everything related to me.

"I... don't know?" I said sheepishly, he frowned and I immediately tried to give a better reason for him to believe.

"Maybe because I didn't serve them well..." I said hanging my head down, reasoning nervously.

"You SERVE that Alpha?" He glared and asked in an irate tone, still so serious. I jerked at his roar. His jaws clenched.

Did I just offend him? But I didn't say anything abrupt, did I?

My breath hitched as I suppressed my tears of fear from falling down my cheeks.

Everything that happened so far was the worst nightmare. My life was already hell what else could happen more? I was fine to take any punishment that he would give as I was used to it. We slaves were never allowed to talk back. I hugged my hands to my chest, shivering.

However, he pursed his lips and slowly his frowned forehead flattened.

Does that mean, he isn't angry anymore?

"Where are your parents?" he asked and I shook hanging my head while those tears, that I had been holding back burst out betraying me.

"They...they died" I mumbled almost breaking down. Puffing, trying hard to drag back the tears.

"You don't have anyone?" he raised another question and I nodded without a second of hesitation.

"M... My... Sister...she..."

"Huh?" he was looking at his hands when I said that.

I hesitated for a while before mustering every ounce of my courage to ask him.

"Did... you... burn... down the... p...pack house?" I stuttered. I wasn't louder but he might have heard my question. My head was hung as I feared to see him in his eyes. There was a pause before he finally answered,

"There was no one alive in the pack house and that place was already burnt" his reply raised many questions in my mind.

Was he telling the truth?

What happened to Catherine then?

Could it be... Could it be that she is still alive?

"My sister was supposed to be there" I exhorted those words expecting his help to find her but he snapped instantly.

"I discovered nobody was alive inside...not even a single lamb from that pack," I scowled, wondering inwardly what had transpired there after I had left.

Where is Catherine?

How I wish I could remove that locket and connect my mind with hers. She might be unconscious.

"Can...we..." I muttered under my breath, wanting to ask him to locate Catherine for me, but I held back when I saw his icy demeanor.

There was a possibility that Catherine might still be alive because she was so certain that Alpha Xian would not kill her at this time.

When my abilities allow me to, I can locate her. I am just hoping she will be alright until then.

Please, live on! Catherine.

His question snapped me out of my reverie, "Do you have a place to go?"

In response, I shook my head once more after giving it some thought.

In all honesty, I do not know of anywhere safe to go. Alpha Xian might have been still alive and looking for me if the pack house was empty. If I stay in this forest, I will not be able to get away from him.

He was aware of my secret.

He was aware of everything, and now that he has personally witnessed that I have found my wolf, he will not spare me.

I need to leave this place.

"No," I shot back.

With a slightly irritated expression, the man in front of me glared at me, put his hands on his hips, and then rolled his eyes over me. I gave him a stern blink as I raised my head.

Although I did not sense any malice on his part, it would not have changed anything if he had bad intentions. There was no princess life for me in that hell, not that I was leading one. I knew that I had to run for my life to survive and that I would return once I was strong enough to locate Catherine, if she was still alive, even though Catherine had gone to great lengths to save me. I was hoping she would.

With a great deal of desperation and hesitation in my voice, I pleaded, "Please...please save me." My eyes were practically pleading with him. With a sigh, he suddenly became angry.

He said, nonchalantly, "Why should I?" which left me stunned. My lips parted and then returned. There was nothing left for me to say.

Why would he? What could he get in return? I had nothing valuable on me other than my blood legacy which I can't possibly tell him.

I hung my head hopelessly.

"I am just a nobody... A slave with nothing..." My fingers clenched my skirt as I held back the urge to cry.

I opened my mouth to say that maybe leaving me here alive would be the best help he could give me at this point, but he sighed again and looked down at my injured foot before I could get my mouth working.

I winced in pain as soon as he touched me. I forgot all about that foot.

Startled, I turned to face him.

"You hurt your foot too? You can not walk in this condition," he bowed to me and gestured to the swollen foot.

Then, I noticed that his expression had changed when he sniffed close to the wound. His gaze grew wide.

My blood...! Shit...!

Was that because of my blood? I sensed my disguise cracking.

I tried to pull away, but he only trailed closely behind, and my face flushed instantly.

What was he doing?

I knew it was not in the best of me to have someone constantly smelling me, and even though the locket had sealed my body's scent, I could not understand why the hell I saw suspicion in his eyes.

A few thoughts crossed my mind as his eyes narrowed. I gulped down nervously.

I was drenched in perspiration and blood, and I looked dirty all over.

Did he discover something from the blood?

Without warning, he looked up and fixed his doubtful gaze on me.

His stare caused me to freeze.

Yes, he had some doubts.

Moon goddess...!!

Please help me out. I do not wish to be exposed once more.

What should I do?
